James Gerard “Jimmy” Cruz, age 60 of Somerdale, New Jersey, passed away on January 19, 2022, after a long battle with diabetes and heart disease.

Jimmy is survived by his 3 children, Glenn, Samantha, and Beth Ann; his grandson, Eric James; his parents, Magda and Cruz Cruz; his siblings, Magda “Gigi”,  Richard, Glenn and their families; and his former wife Janet and family.

Born in Bronx, New York on March 6, 1961, Jimmy grew up working side-by-side with his father and uncles, who instilled in him an appreciation for getting his hands dirty.  He became known for his strong work ethic and passion for building—you could always rely on him to help you fix something. It was no surprise that Jimmy became a Drywall Carpenter for the Union and then to AutoZone, where he got to spend his time under the hood of a car. Jimmy was the one you would call when you needed a good laugh or an amazing meal. Always the last to arrive anywhere, he would quickly become the life of the party and be the last to leave. His love of music connected Jimmy with others and gave him the unique ability to get along with any group of people. He most loved spending time with family and friends going anywhere that had adventure, food and loud music. He also enjoyed watching a good movie at home with company. Jimmy’s children will forever remember him teaching them card games and watching Jack Chan movies. They will remember his happiness at his son’s Navy ceremony, his oldest daughter’s graduation and walking his youngest daughter down the aisle.

Jimmy is preceded by the passing of his long time good friend, Edward Delabo. His family finds comfort knowing he is not alone or hurting.

Details for a Celebration of Jimmy’s life will be announced following the covid surge. Expressions of condolence and support can be sent to Fertig Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street in Mullica Hill, New Jersey.

I am so sorry for his loss. He was a good man and did a lot for me. When I had my twins and didn't have much money, he helped do my girls bedroom and another play room in the basement. He was always and I mean always there for me! To his family, I send my love and prayers. As they say, celebrate his life as that is what he would want. But, I must admit that I'm a bit sad. But I'll smile everytime I see his picture or hear his name. Love you brother!

To my old friend Jimmy,
I’m having a tough time accepting your passing, never thinking it would happen to us, while fully aware that it’s part of life. Although you and I have not seen each other in a long time I have always thought of you as my best friend, brother from another mother lol. I remember like it was yesterday how often we would ride our bikes from our house in Pine Hill to your house in Somerdale to spend weekends together, playing games, pranks, partying, double dates, being kicked out of the Evergreen (always being the last two there), talking & laughing (so often) and being best man for each of our weddings.
I’m sad to see you go without seeing you one last time.

You will always be remembered.
Your old friend Joe Velez.

Rest In Peace Old Friend

January 26, 2022
The last few days have seemed so strange since hearing of Jimmy’s passing. Many years have passed since I last  sawJim however, there are some people like Jimmy, his sister Gigi, his brothers Ricky and Glenn and his parents Magda and Cruz who remain forever in your heart. I grew up with Jimmy and his family and for our entire childhood and early teens we were all inseparable. Our two families ( though not related) were closer than most biological families are. Gigi and I have been life long best friends and I still think of Magda and Cruz as second parents. I have beenso sad knowing that the Cruz family is suffering the loss of their oldest son but, I’ve chosen to focus on the little boy and young man that I used to know. All I can remember is the fun we all had as kids. The sleepovers, pool parties, barbecues and most of all the joy and laughter we all shared as children. Jimmy was always funny. We had a wonderful, happy childhood together and that is what I will always remember when I think of Jimmy. Rest In Peace my old friend. My heart hurts.
