This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, James Barrett 74 years old , born on December 3, 1944 and passed away on July 24, 2019. We will remember him forever.
Jim died unexpectedly in his home on July 24, 2019. Jim was a retired federal public defender in the 10th District Court of Appeals, an active member of the Wyoming State Bar, and a lifelong resident of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Jim is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Francis A. Barrett and Harriett Holland Barrett, granddaughter, McKenna Quast, and his brother, Joseph Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Robyn Barrett, his three children, Lisa Oliver (Brian Oliver) of Broomfield, CO, Amy Martinez (Chad Martinez) of Windsor, CO, and Sean Barrett of Cheyenne WY.
He is also survived by his brothers and sisters Larry Barrett (Chiang May) Thailand, Mike Barrett (Rebecca Barrett) Austin, TX, Francis Barrett (Linda Barrett) Casper, Wy, Pat Barrett (Laurie Elwyn) Cheyenne, Wy, Alice Barrett Clement (Mike Clement) Parker, CO, Mary Barrett Orton (Bill Orton) Estes, CO.
Jim was born on Dec 3, 1944 in Washington, D.C. to Frank and Harriett Barrett. He married Robyn Joines in 1966. He graduated from Creighton Law School and was admitted to the Wyoming State Bar in 1973. He began his legal career litigating water rights on behalf of the Attorney General’s Office. Jim went on to become the first Federal Public Defender in the State of Wyoming.
Jim was an accomplished criminal defense attorney, who loved to engage in a good debate, especially with his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather and he enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a dedicated individual who enjoyed politics. He had great pride in his family history, particularly, as he was the grandson of former U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman, and Governor of Wyoming, Frank A. Barrett. Jim was passionate about his country and a proud Wyomingite He was an active and faithful member of St. Mary's Cathedral.
Vigil for the Deceased will be on Tuesday, 6:30 pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Funeral Liturgy will be Wednesday, 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral (2107 Capitol Ave, Cheyenne, WY) with a reception to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jim’s life.
