I am saddened to learn of James' passing. We were friends in 1972. Both of us were in Christ the King Teen Club. I took him to my Junior Prom at Notre Dame Academy as friends. I have looked for him online for years and just learned that he is no longer with us. Prayers to his young wife and family. He was a lovely person.

Where to start?

As I look out the windows and see the clouds, I realize that is what it has been like since you left us for greener pastures. I then think of all of the great times we spent together and the clouds clear away. Talking to each other all the way home from work to make the drive more pleasant. Even though sometimes you were home already, you sat in your driveway talking to me until I got home. We had conversations about our lives and just about everything. We shared a lot of common interests and food groups such as Taco Bell burritos, butter burgers and even the fountain cokes at Coldstone.
Your family was a source of great pride for you. We spoke of them often. Your relationship with Zia was always spoken of in a tone that was loving, comforting and warm. She was your safe spot.
The impact you left on me as a friend was rich! You will always have a special place in my heart. We could not talk for a month and talk again as though we had just spoken 5 minutes ago.
You are sorely missed Yiiiiiiimmmmeeeeee. I do know that the good Lord loves and tends his sheep and in this I am comforted. May God Bless you and your family.
    With brotherly love,

"But at heart, I am more than a cinematographer." - Conrad Hall

Jim you are the perfect embodiment of this sentiment. You have been so much to so many. Your passion in everything you put your heart to, along with your mischievous smile will permeate the lives and memories for so many for decades to come. Even though I only ever got to enjoy your company on set you taught me so much of the set and of life. You will be missed.

I am currently enjoying a package of Welch's fruit snacks in your honor.

I had the good fortune to have known Jimmy for the whole of his career. However, the last five plus years was a special and unique time for our friendship. We worked side by side on the same production daily and really got to know each other and become close friends.  I think of him each day as I’m doing the projects we used to always do together.  He always made the job more pleasurable and fun as we laughed and chatted our way through the day.  I miss him. RIP Jimmy.

Jim will be greatly missed. He was a kind, funny and gifted soul. I worked with Jim and Zia on a bunch of commercials and he was always able to teach us something new on each one. I really cherish the fact that I got to meet Jim (and Zia) and work with one of the greats in the industry. He was always kind and I owe quite a bit to him.

I remember seeing you at Linds’ birthday at the farm. You looked so overjoyed to be there celebrating with her, the kind of joy that bubbles over and makes everyone around you happy too. I remember hearing stories about you and Linds sharing your work and talent with each other. I see this quiet determination that infuses both of you and it reminds me how if we’re steadfast we can accomplish so much.

His Life

Early Life + Childhood

February 4, 2021
James "Sonny" Kimura was born in Wailuku, Maui on 3/12/1957.  At the age of 6 months he moved from Maui to Los Angeles with his father, mother and two sisters.  His father James was an ironworker foreman who worked on downtown LA high rises.  One of his projects included the Los Angeles Coliseum where he engraved the family name.

Growing up in Hancock Park, James attended Catholic school.  He was sweet, kind, intelligent, athletic and shy.  He got straight As, played basketball, football and baseball and loved attending USC football games with his Dad and sisters.  He played with GI Joe toys, made models and though shy, took part in high school musical Bye Bye Birdie.

James graduated from The University of Southern California with a double major in Biology and Political Science.  While originally planning a career in dentistry, shortly after graduating, James got a summer job as a Production Assistant where he found a new love - the film industry.

Home + Family

After embarking on his career path, James met his first wife Diane in 1984, bought his first home in the Hollywood Hills (pictured here) and had two children, Lindsey and Daniel.  He was a loving, caring, protective and talented husband and father.

He provided for his family, taught his children many valuable skills, coached his kids' soccer, basketball, baseball and football teams and took photos at games.

In 2000, James met his second wife Zia on television show Arliss.  They worked together and enjoyed many travel adventures including a trip to Japan, dancing at festivals and attending concerts.

James was a kind and loving father, husband, friend and partner.

Work + Career

James had a successful career of 41 years in the film and television industry.  He explored multiple facets and roles beginning as a PA.  He worked as a grip, electrician, best boy, gaffer, director of photography and director.  He started a lighting company called LDK Lighting.

As a DP and director, he specialized in tabletop and live action commercials with clients such as Coldstone, Donatos Pizza and Taco Bell and had the opportunity to work abroad in countries such Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and France.  Check out one of his reels in the gallery!

James loved his work life and enjoyed meeting and developing relationships with his colleagues and co-workers.  A natural and gifted teacher, James mentored many in his industry passing along traditions and tricks of the trade.  He was a true friend to many, always lending a helping hand and lightening the mood with jokes and laughs.
