I wanted to let you all know how much I cared about Uncle Jim. I remember before I met him, Mike had told me he was a cowboy. He had the biggest horse I had ever seen, just the right size for him. He accepted me into your family and I felt like knew him very well with talking to Jackie. I know how all of you will miss him. We have been blessed to have him in our lives and I loved him so much. I have thought of all of you and prayed for you.

His Life
June 5, 2021
James Clark Henrie Ⅱ, 88 was reunited with his loving wife and high school sweetheart Joan, on May 29, 2021. Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Corrales, New Mexico surrounded by his loving family.

James was born on June 21, 1932 in his family's Farmhouse in Benton, Kansas to parents Lynne Van Dyne and Peggy Frances Miles Henrie. This farmhouse was a special place because Jim's father and Grandfather were both born there. Jim grew up in Albuquerque in his Mother's home with his sister Jackie. Through his childhood Jim traveled to Santa Fe frequently to spend time with his Grandfather, New Mexico's 12th Governor John E. Miles. Jim was very athletic as a child with natural born abilities to succeed. When he graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1951 he had lettered in football, basketball, and was a state champion javelin thrower. Although Jim loved sports, the time that he cherished the most were the summers he spent with his Grandparents, and his Aunt Elsie and Uncle Leroy. Jim’s family depended on his strength and abilities, so his arrival to the Henrie farm was always greatly anticipated. Jim was a hard worker and spent many hours gathering cattle on horseback, milking cows, and helping in the wheat fields. This hard work and the long days shaped Jim into the cowboy and exceptional horseman he was. Jim grew into a strong, loving, and respected man who lived his life to the fullest; serving and helping others without hesitation, all the while influencing many along the way.

After High School Jim attended New Mexico A&M now known as New Mexico State University where he played football his freshman year and also became a member of the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. It was after his first year of college on June 4, 1952 he married the love of his life Joan Sandlin. Jim and Joan spent their first years of marriage in Las Cruces, NM while Jim finished up his bachelors of Science in Agriculture, graduating in 1954. After graduation Jim followed his heart and love for his country and joined the United States Army. On September 11, 1954, Jim reported to Fort Sill Oklahoma. Two months later Jim and Joan’s first child, James Clark Henrie Ⅲ, was born on November 12 at Sandia Base Hospital in Albuquerque.  For the next two years Jim served as a Lieutenant in Artillery in Fairbanks, Alaska with his wife and young son. Shortly after leaving the military, Jim took a job as an Agriculture Extension Agent with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Newcomb, New Mexico. During this time in Newcomb Jim gained love and respect for the Native American culture and traditions. Through this growing respect he was given the name “Akałii Snééz” by his Navajo friends. After Jim’s time with the BIA he went to work for the Bureau of Land Management, taking a job in Farmington, New Mexico as a Range Management Specialist. While in Farmington his first daughter Kelly Lee was born on July 1, 1957, and then daughter Kary Lorene was born February 11, 1960. When working for the BLM Jim fought forest fires throughout the country. Some of Jim’s best stories were of him being dropped from helicopters into the thick of it. Facing the dangerous wild fires and risking his life for the safety of others. The BLM then transferred Jim to Albuquerque in 1961 to take the position of Assistant District Manager and he moved to Corrales, NM. Jim was an active volunteer in the youth organization, 4-H, and the American Palomino, the American Quarter Horse and the American Horse Show Associations. He was involved in the State and County 4-H fairs and made sure his kids were well educated on the subject. In September of 1967 Jim was hired to be the President of the Production Credit Association in Albuquerque. This position helped Jim to grow the agricultural community in New Mexico facilitating farm, ranch, and livestock loans. Jim retired from the PCA in 1986. At this time he was fortunate to be able to buy his own ranch near Lindrith, New Mexico. When purchasing this property Jim was able to accomplish his childhood dream of owning his own ranch. Jim spent countless days in Lindrith working and spending time with his horses, cattle and hunting with family. He was a beloved horseman and a genuine cowboy. This was Jim’s favorite place to be. The ranch holds the memories of a lifetime and with Jim’s amazing dedication he strived to make the ranch a home. Opening his doors and arms with love to anyone who came.

Holidays, birthdays, and every occasion in between were always the most joyous events. Jim enjoyed these gatherings with his family because it was tradition for them to be held at his home in Corrales. Jim’s three children, eight grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren were present and this brightened his smile. His contagious, loving, and outstanding smile is something that will always be remembered.

Jim influenced many people's lives and was the glue that held his family together. He took care of his grandkids and his great grand kids, cradled, and impacted them and his children in every way possible. Jim or “Pop” lived a beautiful and long life full of surprises, happiness, and family. Even though he is not with us today in the flesh, his light will always be shining down on everyone who knows him. James Clark Henrie ll was an exceptional man, husband, father, and grandfather. Though his family will miss him and his contagious smile, they know he is happy to finally be in paradise “dancin’ a many miles” with the love of his life, Joan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, and sister, Jacqueline Barnes. He is survived by sister, Lynne Peterson of Page, AZ; son James C Henrie III and wife Julie of Aztec, NM;  daughter Kelly Lee Shetter and husband Larry of Corrales, NM; daughter Kary Lorene Jimenez and husband Adam of Edgewood, NM. 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many more family members and dear friends.

One Amazing Man!

June 11, 2021
My Grandpa was an amazing man! Although we lived several hours away, he always made sure to stay involved with us girls. He and Grandma would visit often to watch us play softball games or show livestock at the county fair. Grandpa would spend hours with us girls in the driveway, helping us improve our softball skills. I will never forget memories like that.

I remember my sister and me spending a few weeks during summers with Grandpa and Grandma in Corrales. All eight grandkids would end up, together, at their house for a sleepover which was usually on their living room floor. Grandpa would make popcorn and chocolate malts while we all watched a movie. He and grandma would cuddle on the couch and laugh with (or at) us kids. The next morning he would always make us a breakfast of bacon and eggs with toast.

I never remember Grandpa getting mad and always remember him with a smile on his face. He was patient, kind, and a great role model. I was one of eight grandchildren and he always made me feel special. He influenced my life in so many ways and I will be forever grateful.

My wife, Becky, and I worked with Jim at BLM.we fought fires together. One was in Montana that I enjoyed because we had to cross the Missouri River by pulling on a cable. Jim was my fire boss and I had a Native American crew.  Jim knew a lot about firefighting. There were other crews from Oregon who thought they knew all about firefighting, but it was up to Jim to make decisions that counterbalanced what those foresters from Oregon were telling us to do. They wanted my crew to go into a place with vertical rock walls on both sides. I told Him that I would not take my crew there and he agreed and backed me up. Jim was a very nice man to work for and with. Becky and I both liked and respected Jim so much!   An outstanding gentleman, worker, and friend!
I also knew Joan from when we both attended Stronghurst.
