Janá Lee Kuest (K7NOE-SK), 38, born on August 10, 1973 and passed away on November 11, 2011 at 1531 hours as a result of injuries sustained in head-on car crash on Hwy 22 near Stayton, Oregon. Her 10-year old son, Garrett, and his 9-year old friend survived the crash. She leaves behind her husband of almost 15 1/2 years, Fred R. Kuest (K7FRK), and her son, Garrett Kuest (K7GIK). Internment was held at Willamette National Cemetery on November 18, 2011. A Memorial Service was held on November 19, 2011.
Janá graduated from Lewis-Clark State College in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a Special Education Endorsement. While at LCSC, Janá met and then married Fred Robert Kuest (Class of 1998) on May 25, 1996.
Janá taught in the Hillsboro School District since 1999 and was most recently a teacher at Brookwood Elementary. What made her a great teacher was her compassion and understanding for each student. As her principal, Molly Siebert, said, “She had a real gift for connecting with students others saw as difficult.” That single sentence sums up Janá as a teacher. She cared not only about the academic success of her students, but their success in life as well.
Janá ran her life and classroom by many rules. Recently, she did a project with her students based on the character Leroy Jethro Gibbs from the TV show NCIS. Gibbs’ Rules outline the code he lives his life by. Janá came up her own rules and then had her class brain storm their own rules. Because she needed to have the students write a five paragraph essay and was tired of hearing, “I don’t know what to write about,” Janá decided to have the students pick their top three rules and write about why they are important to them. When she explained the assignment to the parents at student conferences, every parent loved it. It was her belief that her students would succeed in school and life by following all of her rules, especially her top three rules.
#1: You success is greatly influenced by your attitude.
#2: Rumors are like feathers in a pillow. Once they are scattered, it is impossible to get them all back.
#3: Trust is a strong bond that is easily broken.
Janá was also known to have fun in the classroom and was known to kill words that were overused in her classroom. Her former students still remember the day in reading group when Janá killed the word fun. Fred remembers walking into her classroom one day and seeing a large paper tombstone with the word “fun” on it and indicating the date the word died. Little did her students know Janá was about to kill the word “like” this year.
Janá was a big kid at heart. She loved children, and they loved her back. She worked in the Nursery at Hillsboro Presbyterian Church and also volunteered for several years as a leader with Garrett’s Cub Scout pack. Many people and students have said something negative about themselves in front of Janá and were met with her standard reply, “Five positives about yourself, please.” She would not drop the issue or let people off of the hook until she got them to say five positive things about themselves. Her integrity and unique ability to bring out the best in a person will be missed by many, especially her students.

Miss you sister and can't wait to run with you on the streets of gold when we both meet our Saviour in the clouds!!!!

Third Year
My dearest Jana'
I don't know why but this has been the hardest year without you. Today I have wept and wept because of missing you so much. You were such an inspiration and so bubbly and fun to be around. You never saw bad in people. You could always find something good to say. I know your students saw this in you also. Such an admired quality. I am so proud to be able to say you were my daughter. I know you take after your dad but I am sure there was some of your mother in you also.
Today we were going to go to the cemetery but I had a meeting in the morning and it was so windy we decided to get balloons and send them off from home where it was the very last time we saw you and were able to say goodbye. Well we stopped at Costco and got a few things. When we got home dad opened the back of the car to get our groceries out and didn't remember that the balloons were in the back of the car. Guess what. The wind had it's way and they flew out of the car. Didn't realized it until about an hour later when I asked your dad where they were. I am sure they knew where they were suppose to go though. I love you so much and MISS you terribly. Your son is getting good use of both your pocket trumpet and the one you played. So glad to see that he has taken an interest in playing the instrument that you enjoyed.
Love you much,
Mom
My dear Jana'. Today I went to visit your memorial site on your birthday. I can't believe that it's been almost three years since you have passed. I left you a card and some flowers. We had a birthday balloon for you also but it decided to take off on it's own. (Kind of like you) That's okay because that's what made you so special. I had a hard time of course. I know your son misses you and really needs you right now in his teen years. I wish you could be here for him. I think of you often especially as I look at Schnoodles. I remember the day we went and got her. We really fooled your dad didn't we. She has been very special in our lives though. Your dad has to admit that he enjoys her so very much. Your sisters miss you so much. They both wished me prayers as your dad and I went to visit your memorial site. We also went over and said hello to Ray and Doris Bailey. Well, the way the world is going now I don't think it will be very long before we will join you up there. Save a spot for your dad and I next to you. I love you so much. I hope you knew that.
Until we meet again
Your mom,
Leona
Round Table Pizza
I don't remember the month or date but we were at Round Table Pizza sitting at the round table. A place we as a family loved to visit. We were talking with the girls as we were waiting for our pizza and I don't even really remember what we were talking about but the word sex was in the conversation. Well Jana's sisters didn't want to
say it out loud and didn't want to say it in front of Jana' so they spelled it. A few moments later Jana' (like she could do so well) blurted out I know what that spells, SEX . Her sisters were so embarassed that they crawled under the table. That was my precious daughter. I really have three. Proud of all of them.
Your Mom
