Mom

April 23, 2019

Our sweet Mother, Nana and Sister Janet Elaine Surface, 68, of Sherman Texas passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of April 4th, 2019.  Tragically she and her husband Richard Surface were in a terrible car accident.  Richard joined Mom on April 6th.

Janet was born in Pueblo, Colorado on September 21st 1950 to parents Earlin Leroy Busch and Lorene Busch (Gardner).  She was raised a country girl on the Busch family ranch.  She attended high school in nearby Walsenburg, CO graduating in 1969.  She completed some college at Adams State in Alamosa, CO.

As a young woman she married Floyd Summers and had two sons.  After her divorce from Floyd she moved to Denver, CO where she would meet and marry David Collier.  Together they added a daughter to the family but there was no “half” sibling talk; David would be a father to all of Janet’s children.  Together they would raise four children including David’s son Wesley Collier from a previous relationship.

Janet loved children and for many years she ran an in-home daycare which was ideal while her own kids were young.  After her children were all in school she began a long career in land title insurance.  Janet and David would spend many years together but separated & divorced in the early 2000’s.  Janet relocated from Denver to La Junta, CO; there she would continue her career in land title but also become a landlord and run a cleaning company.  She was always a prime example that you should stay busy, work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

When her sons Randy and Jason both moved to Texas she jumped at the chance to go too; allowing her to spend more time with her sons and with her grandchildren.

After moving to TX Mom’s life changed for the better.  She made new friends, was active with her church and she would meet Richard Surface.  They married June 2010 in a sweet backyard ceremony surrounded by family & friends.  They built a life together.  After Mom retired they went full swing into traveling in their RV with their little dog Widget.  They visited over 30 states in a few short years.  Each new destination they made sure to visit the sights/museums and were always busy.  They moved to Sherman, Texas in the spring of 2018; having had their new home built away from the hustle/bustle of Dallas Ft. Worth.  They were living and loving life when they were called home.

Janet is survived by her loving family.  Brothers Ronald Busch (wife Kathy), Dennis Busch and sister Maraleta Campbell (husband Wayne).  Her eldest son Jason Summers (wife PattyAnn), granddaughter Alexandria Buckley (husband Chris) and great grandson Archer Buckley.   Her son Randy Summers (wife Brandi), grandchildren Matthew Summers (wife Ashley), Kyla Summers, Jacob Summers and great grandson Lukas Summers.  Her daughter Melissa Lawrence (husband Matthew).  Her step-daughter Elizabeth Sohail, grandchildren Misha Sohail, Zaynab Sohail and Shan Sohail.  She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of life event later this year to be held in Colorado.  Close family and friends will be invited when we spread Mom & Richard’s ashes at the Busch family ranch.  It was Mom’s wish to return home to Colorado and Richard’s wish to be with Mom.

Date, time and details still to be determined.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to a charity in Janet and Richard Surface’s name.  Some ideas are Meals on Wheels, Breast Cancer research, Donate Life America or any others as you see fit.  Just not United Way (if you knew Mom then you know why!).

We appreciate all of the outpouring of love, prayer, support and kindness that we have received.  We loved them and they will be dearly missed.
