Janet was wonderfully enthusiastic. Keith was a Godfather to our elder daughter and we always associated Janet's arrival with something purposeful to do: a challenge, fun. She introduced us to 'Mancala' and, sharp thinker that she was, gave some very useful tips about the mathematics of playing the game. Just a very positive person. Her criticisms were never merely destructive. She just stood for the truth.

I first got to know Janet as a grandparent at school. She quickly offered her services of help and got involved with our Gardening Club. She was interested to know how maths teaching was changing because she wanted to keep "up to date" with what was going on- not always agreeing with new methods! We miss her energy and enthusiasm at school and have planted a tree in her memory.
As a parent ,my daughter was looking for extra maths tuition and Janet came highly recommended. I wasn't sure how it was going to go- Janet could be very straight talking and expected a lot from her students. It went better than I could have hoped, my daughter started to improve with her maths and her confidence grew, something which I will forever be grateful for. I wish that we could have shared results day with her. In addition, they also developed a close friendship [not letting an almost 60 year age gap get in their way] - they both cared for each other and together they enjoyed chatting about a whole host of topics. We will always be grateful for the time which we had together and remember her with fondness.

Lots of happy memories of Janet's time at Rugby School where she did so much and inspired so many young people. I particularly enjoyed the wine tasting evenings that we set up with John/Sue Allen and John/Ruth Jarvis. RIP Janet and hopefully we can recognise your commitment to Rugby School in due course in some way.

Janet was a much-valued colleague in the maths department, always supportive, caring, and working tirelessly for her pupils. Her energy pervaded all areas of the school. For us, she was also an inspirational teacher for two of our children, and the facilitator and co-producer of a school fashion show for a third. Post-teaching she became a fellow traveller in various places in Turkey and Portugal, her erudition adding enormously to the fun, and also in Cumbria where she was a welcoming hostess and entertaining guide. She is fondly remembered. We miss you, Janet.
With love from Gerald and Pat.

Janet was a very important person in my uncle’s life, and became a valued member of his wider family. My daughter and I benefitted from Janet’s company over the years. We have some lovely memories of times spent with Janet, and we will miss her immensely.
I very much enjoyed hearing updates about the lives of Janet’s growing family when we saw her. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren, and my condolences to them for such a profound loss.

Janet, I miss you.

We met, twenty-plus years ago, through Keith, and over that time we have shared so much. I miss your visits to us in London, usually with Keith. (NB your room is still available!) I miss your love of adventure, and the fun and the energy you brought to everything you did. I miss your determination to make the most of even the most inauspicious events. I miss your can-do kindness and competence. I miss your being on the end of the phone, and ready with sane and practical suggestions about what to do in some minor crisis.

I am also grateful to you. I'm grateful for lovely holidays, and the organisation you put into them. I'm grateful for the festive occasions we've shared at your home. I'm grateful for your interest in my children and grandchildren - not limited to panics over GCSE maths! Primarily, I am grateful to you for your loving care for Keith, and for being there for him, and for all of us, through his (and your) last illness.

Dear Janet - thank you.

Janet has been a huge figure in so many lives, and I have been lucky enough to know her my whole life. She was an eternally vibrant aunt, who always managed to find something to entertain us, and never shied from telling me when I was being a brat!
Some of my favourite memories include her teaching me basic piano tunes, teaching me baking (and being philosophical when my Victoria Sponge beat hers in the village show - never repeated!), and more recently spending a romantic Valentines evening together taking up the curtains for my first house.
I will miss her straightforward personality and humour, and am grateful for all she did for me.

I've known Janet for as long as I have with Andrew, which is most of my life. I remember the two sides to Janet growing up, one being my best friend's mum, and the other the mathematics super-genius teacher at Rugby School (the later of which I never experienced first hand due as Janet only taught the maths elite!).

The other side of Janet is the one that I grew up with, and the one that will remember most fondly, as a mother to Andrew and Rebecca. Xx

Lavinia and I met Janet through Keith and grew to love her more every time we met. She was sharply intelligent, witty and generous. Game for just about anything-and thank you for introducing us to 'Mancala', Janet once allowed her nails to be painted green to match her blouse before dinner, and afterwards led the dancing of the Dashing White Sergeant and the Gay Gordons. She was wonderfully good at puzzles, and to watch her and Keith bouncing ideas off one another as they worked through their favourite Speccie puzzle was marvellous. Her enthusiasm for the Camera Club and for gardening was palpable, and her loving devotion to her grandchildren was inspiring. We miss her very much.

Gardening Club at Warcop CofE Primary School will miss Janet's green fingers and wealth of planting knowledge. Children thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her learning about gardening and the joy of harvesting crops together. She gave her time to help children explore and discover and her humor brought laughter during our sessions. She is greatly missed but will always be remembered.

This tribute is from both me (Roger Brown) and my wife Marian. Janet and Keith were close friends of ours, not only through Wordsworth Singers but also through other shared interests such as film, photography, humour and moral philosophy! Janet was a creative photographer and in May 2019, we shared a long-weekend with both of them in Northumbria. This was organised by Janet through Penrith Camera Club of which she was a valued member. We fondly recall a happy day on Lindisfarne where Janet took numerous photos while we and Keith enjoyed strolling around and sampling the mead! We remember so vividly the terrible news, a few days after the event, that both Janet and Keith had died. We continue to remember them with great fondness as wonderful friends and so gifted.

It was lovely to get to know Janet alongside my godfather Keith. She had a wonderful sense of humour and fun and we really enjoyed her company. I remember one occasion in our cottage in Cornwall where everyone played a hilarious and competitive game of ‘Articulate’ with a player age range of about 65 years, and another where Janet very kindly (and bravely) let my young stepdaughter give her a manicure, which involved having much more finger than nail painted. Rest in peace Janet, you are missed.

As everyone who knew mum will know, not only was she intelligent with a fantastically wicked, dry sense of humour but she also had a great love of travelling and finding adventure which she encouraged in Andrew and myself and more recently in her grandchildren as well.

As a family we had many fun holidays together to Rhodes, the Scilly isles, Italy, France and we even went on a cruise round the Greek islands (which was an experience which will never be forgotten!). When we ventured to Disneyland Paris, mum was too embarrassed to tell anyone where we were going but she had such an amazing time she finally admitted where we had been when we got back home.

Driving abroad was particularly eventful with mum as I found out on two of my trips to Italy with her. The first one was on a school trip with Keith and the classics department to Rome and Naples, which involved a wild car chase between mum and Keith out of Pisa. The second was when we went on a family trip to the Amalfi Coast, the coastal road made for a hair-raising journey every time we went on it. Mum refused to let me be the front passenger as I didn’t drive and wouldn’t be good at gauging the distance between the car and the cliff wall but she let me on the final day and I was the best passenger for the job.

It wasn’t until a trip to Paris that I realised mum didn’t trust my navigation skills either as she didn’t trust which exit I was telling her to come off on the roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe so she went down a different road and half way down it admitted I had been right all along.

Family has always been very important to mum and she cherished every moment she spent with her four grandchildren, all of whom she doted on. Whenever she used to visit us in Manchester she loved taking my son to Legoland and Chester Zoo. They went to the zoo so often that they had a set route to make sure they always saw the animals they wanted to see. We all miss mum so very much and I am grateful that my children and I went to live with her and the children got to spend quality time with Granny. I know she will be looking down on all of us and she will be boasting to all the angels about the incredible people her grandchildren have, and continue to, become.

I am so proud of the fact that whatever she did she wouldn’t let the Parkinson’s ruin her spirit. She taught me to be a fighter and for that and so much more I am eternally grateful.

I miss you so much mum!

I met Mrs Fielden when I joined the sixth form (LXX) at Rugby School, and chose to study maths and further maths for A-level. She taught me mechanics for the two years but was so much more. She was a central figure in the school for me, for example also singing in the chapel choir which I did too. Her skill and passion in teaching maths was brilliant but it was in my final year that I really got to see her qualities. She tutored a group of us who were applying for Oxbridge in the advanced maths papers required, but then also, wonderfully she invited my to stay with the family in Appleby for half term to do revision. She took me on a trip over to Durham, where I ended up at university, to visit and to meet one of her friends. Sadly I think I rather took this amazing generosity of spirit for granted and I didn't make the effort to keep in touch apart from occasional Facebook 'likes' and such, but I wanted to honour my memory of a fabulous person, no nonsense but so caring.

I really got to know Janet well when she took over the Chair of the North Cumbria Rock Garden Group. She had endless enthusiasm, was full of useful ideas and a hard worker who would rather do jobs herself than delegate. She is sorely missed by all her knew her. It was a privilege to have known her.

Auntie Jan, my godmother, and a kind support. I know she will have supported many. Her strength was exceptional, as was her love of her family. I have warm memories of staying when I was a child, and her children were small, being taken on lovely walks and picnics. Her humour, and 'I know how to solve this' attitude, was one of the first memories I have of her, making up 'the humphreys' at dinner time when I would not eat... her tapping out tiny footsteps under the table with her fingers and exclaiming 'quick Jenny, the Humphreys are coming to eat your food!'... It worked, and made me laugh. I am so happy to have been at her wedding as a child, a lovely day, and then to have had the lovaliest time with her and Adrian at my Civil Partnership in 2014, dancing together. She danced with the same enthusiasm she did for everything she cared about. Annual coffee catchups around the Edinburgh festival with her, Keith and Libby, were always a pleasure. Always asking how my eldest daughter was, and Im so very thankfull she met my second daughter at christmas 2018. Undoubtebly one of the strongest most independent women I will ever have the pleasure of knowing, loving, and missing, along with her moth(er), always with us xxx

There are special people in our lives who will never leave us , even after they are gone.
We were so fortunate to have Janet as our immediate neighbour for the past 20 years.

Such a lovely neighbour and friend we will always remember you.

I love you, Janet, and greatly miss you. If I was sad, sorry, lonely or fed up you would have been guaranteed to cheer me, forgive me, comfort me or make me laugh. You were a real friend. We laughed together and cried together and shouted at each other together. Yorkshire people's highest compliment - is, or used to be, when I lived in Yorkshire; it was to be real. You qualify for that dear Janet. But in saying that you could easily live with people who were not real and enjoy their company, and did not judge them. A half-hour with you Janet, was a real tonic. I am sure them up there are enjoying your sense of humour no end. Almost certainly as much as I miss it, and you.

My first memory of Janet was moving into our house with her little family and dog. We shared 10 Moultrie Road with Adrian and Janet for her first years at Rugby. When she moved on to the Crescent we often exchanged Sunday lunches together after singing in the Chapel choir in the morning service. She was a good dependable friend and even though I was supposedly in charge of Chapel flower arrangements Janet had much more to say about it than I ever did. No one except Janet was allowed to decorate the Eagle, it was hers. Just two or three months before Janet and Keith died, Pat and Gerald invited us to Sunday lunch with them. It was a very special time. The late autumn sunshine was beautiful. The warmth of that particular lunch time stayed with us, little did we know that COVID was ahead. The last thing I said to Janet on that occasion was how good Adrian’s Sunday lunches were. She beamed. Later that afternoon the six of us went to Kilworth House to see Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was altogether a very memorable day.
Sending special love to Andrew and Becky and their families.

Janet or mum as I called her was and is an incredible woman. Never have I know someone as strong, independent, intelligent and loving as her. The perfect example of girl power. She knew what she wanted, worked hard and got it! Such a inspiration.
She was like no one I have ever known and I can see so much of her strength and fierceness in my daughter (her granddaughter) and we will be lucky if she turns out to be half the woman Janet was.
She welcomed me into family and always made me feel like I belonged. I couldn’t of asked for a better mother in law. She was kind, accepting and full of love.
The greatest shame is that she won’t get to see her grandchildren grow but I fully believe she will be guiding them in more ways than we can imagine.

I miss you everyday and will everyday to come. X

We remember Janet for her intelligence, her many and varied interests, including crosswords and quizzes, her generous hospitality and her determination to overcome any obstacle that life threw at her.

We enjoyed two holidays in France and a lovely week in the Scilly Isles with Janet and Adrian. Needless to say Janet ensured that every possible minute was used to enhance these trips.

I have many fond memories of times spent with Janet when she came to visit Andrew and Jessica. I particularly think fondly of the last time I saw her when we watched the kids paddling in the stream and walked to have lunch in Brokenhurst. She gave me some excellent advice on how to deal with my daughter's 'wild poo' situation...a tribute to her practical nature and down to earth attitude!! She will be missed and I will think of her whenever i use our salad severs that she bought us for our wedding gift.
I am mostly grateful to Janet for raising such an awesome son who is a very dear friend to me! I look forward to a time when we can raise a glass all together and give Janet a proper send off! Xx

Thanks for all the good times - for the fun of holidays in Cornwall and Italy; for the hard work and hysteria shared rehearsing school plays; for visits to concerts, theatres and restaurants; for staying in touch when you moved on from BGS, making me part of your family - and for never, ever, being boring.

The illness and subsequent deaths of Janet and Keith last March brought home to me that Covid 19 was indeed a serious threat that could hit right at the heart of the family.
When Janet joined the Fielden family in 1981 I don't think that we quite knew what had hit us! This tornado blew in and made us all sit up a bit. It was certainly a good thing for brother Adrian , who had been seeming decidedly middle aged.
I am sure that everyone contributing memories of Janet will comment on her energy and organisational abilities. She was a teacher who inspired and to do that in maths is something special. She had a real empathy with young people and my daughters spent many happy half-terms staying with Janet and Adrian while we were overseas. In Rugby Janet volunteered their home for the initial intake of girls to the school. Nothing fazed Janet.
Later when she retired to Appleby, and a supposedly quieter life she again got involved in many groups and organisations . This included camera club, alpine society and Parkinson's UK, amongst others. She found it impossible to stand back and was always up at the front leading the way. Janet admitted to a low boredom threshold and had a competitive streak. If you wondered at a slight loss of attention while on the phone she was probably playing online scrabble at the same time.
For more than twenty years Janet came to visit me in Edinburgh during the Festival. At first this was with Rebecca and Andrew and then latterly with Keith. Adrian tended to opt out after being an audience of one at a Moliere play in french.
Janet approached the festival with the same enthusiasm as everything else and soon worked out an eclectic mix of entertainment .
the Parkinson's diagnosis was a blow but it didn't stop Janet. She continued to fit in as much to life as she possibly could, not letting the disease get the better of her. If there is any possibility of a silver lining to her passing it is that she was spared the the inevitable slow decline that would have depressed and frustrated her.
In phone calls to janet in hospital her concern was for her children and grandchildren, sad that she couldn't see them but so proud.
As well as being a sister-in-law Janet was a good friend and support. I miss her.

In recent years we saw Janet maybe a couple of times a year . Many years ago when Andrew was at school with James, at Bilton Grange Prep School, then onto Rugby School, the wonderful Janet Fielden came into our lives. She was an awesome maths teacher, mentor and a formidable raconteur. She was like a busy bee, never still, always debating issues of the day. We admired her general knowledge, there was no subject she didn’t know about.  She travelled to all the cultural destinations everybody should visit but never dared say you haven’t. She was a small lady with a tremendous heart and yes she was formidable. Very sadly missed xx

I first met Janet when she came for interview for a part-time 'retirement' job but retirement was not a lifestyle that Janet was ready to embrace! She was a dynamo who inspired a love of Maths in many girls and her enthusiasm for all aspects of boarding school life was always evident and she introduced new clubs and societies. I was lucky to become a friend as well as work with Janet. She was always kind and supportive as well as being willing to share her knowledge and considerable expertise which covered so many areas of life. I will always remember the fun and laughter we had on shared holidays in places such as Devon, the Isles of Scilly and Iceland. An inspiring lady who will be greatly missed!

Formidable Mrs Fielden, forever she shall be in the hearts and minds of so many of her pupils. She was strong, quick-witted, never spoke down to you always to you, whether praising or ticking off! I met Janet when she lived in Husbands Bosworth with Adrian, Rebecca and Andrew. We were involved with the pta, school and various other activities. I remember Janet as a bundle of energy who didn't take prisoners (!) and would help out or organise wherever it was needed. I remember we had a lovely trip to a flower show together. Sadly we didn't meet up after she moved to Appleby but kept in touch now and then. Rest in peace and keep those angels organised.

My first night in Rugby, taken by Keith to a meal at the school, and a voice pipes up from the other end of the table. 'I hear you need somewhere to live. Babysit my children one night a week and you can live in my house'. And so i did for 4 months. You never know when a moment will bring a new person into your life, but meeting Janet like that opened a door for me, gave me support starting a new job in an unfamiliar town, and gave me confidence eventually to move out and on. Whilst our lives only crossed infrequently thereafter, those meet ups we did have never felt like years apart. Its hard to believe that bundle of energy has gone.

I met Janet through my late husband David Chapman. I straight away loved her wonderful sense of humour and wit. She always brought a lot of laughter to our house. She tutored my eldest son Thomas for his A level maths and they got on fantastically together. I remember them sitting at the kitchen table and in her no nonsense way she encouraged and worked him hard. She certainly gave him the confidence , which then led him to do a physics degree at Edinburgh university.
Thank you Janet for being in our lives and for all you did for us

My strongest memories of Janet come from when she, together with Adrian, Rebecca and Andrew had me to stay over half terms when I was at boarding school and my parents were abroad. She made me feel like part of the family on those visits, and they were a lifeline after a term at school. In many ways I must have been infuriating – she often told the stories of trailing round 8 different shoe shops for the perfect pair of school shoes, or driving me to Birmingham airport only to find I had forgotten my ticket. However, she never seemed annoyed. She was always supportive, encouraging and came up with such fun ideas of things to do.

Seeing her with my children made me realise how much of a born teacher she was. I remember her teaching my son how to play chess in the course of an afternoon, just breaking it down for him step by step. She also taught me to do cryptic crosswords in much the same way! I miss her.

Over the years by far the most common description of my mother has always been based around her no-nonsense attitude and restlessness. For those of us that knew her it was always obvious that she was impatient to help and to love. In work a fantastic teacher and housemistress, but this inevitably spilled into every corner of her life, and for better or worse every day was a lesson.

At times like these we are told to try to find the positives, the silver linings. For me the ones that really stand out are that both of my children had the opportunity to meet her, I got to spend a week in isolation with her before she was taken in to hospital, the limitations of age and her Parkinson’s diagnosis did not restrict her and that I was able to spend her last moments with her over the phone.

A year has now passed since we last saw each other.

For the relentless drive and ambition. The years of care, laughter and learning. The start in life, opening my eyes to the world and the patience to listen to the arrogant ramblings of a 10 year old boy as I tried to explain the fundamentals of Christianity and spiritualism on long car journeys. For the passion to teach, to improve and to help. And the smiles, the tears and indifferences…I’m eternally grateful.
