A Successful Man
“That man is a success –
who has lived well,
laughed often and loved much;
who has gained the respect of intelligent men
and the love of children;
who has filled his niche
and accomplished his task;
who leaves the world better
than he found it;
who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty
or failed to express it.;
who looked for the best in others
and gave the best he had.”

As We Look Back Dad
As we look back over time
We find ourselves wondering …..
Did we remember to thank you enough
For all you have done for us?
For all the times you were by our sides
To help and support us …..
To celebrate our successes
To understand our problems
And accept our defeats?
Or for teaching us by your example,
The value of hard work, good judgment,
Courage and integrity?
We wonder if we ever thanked you
For the sacrifices you made.
To let us have the very best?
And for the simple things
Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?
If we have forgotten to show our
Gratitude enough for all the things you did,
We’re thanking you now.
And we are hoping you knew all along,
How much you meant to us.

           " A Tribute from your "Baby Girl"

In June, 1961, I attended my Father's funeral. I never in a million years expected to be burying my Dad at 50 years old. As cliche as it is though – I really do feel that it's not just the time you get with your parents..it’s the quality in that time. I am so blessed I was able to receive 9 amazing, quality filled years with my Dad. I had just turned 9 yrs. on June 6 of that same year.

My Mom was in and out of the hospital because of her heart condition. She could not attend the funeral services. It was a hard & difficulty time of my life for a 9 year old. Immediately, after burying my Dad; my best friend, Ora Deloris Perkins died from third degree burns. Her flannel gown was ignited by flames from a space heater.

You may see my glory but you do not know my story.
While Dad’s Funeral was an emotionally charged day, my older siblings & their spouses were there for me.

And for me? Go hug your Mom & Dad. Tell them you love them. Because time waits for no one. Today is a gift, yesterday was history, tomorrow is a mystery.

His Life

A Tribute for My Great- Grandfather by Kennedy Harrell

March 20, 2019

Deacon Jasper Leon Harrell, Sr.

“A Pillar of the Amite City Community”

* He was a family man.

* He was not only faithful to God but was faithful to his family.

* Married to Josephine Doretta Richardson-Harrell. A loving wife & mother.

* Their marriage was so solid and sweet that simply to be around them had a positive influence on others.

* He was a man of faith.

* Head Deacon of Gordon-Richardson Church of God in Church.

* He served there until he passed away in June 1961.

* He is the father of my grandfather-The late Elder Herbert Harrell.

* His leadership was unique because he was a quiet leader.Whether it was deacon of a church board or any board; Grandfather Jasper didn’t always have a lot to say, but when he did, everyone listened.

* He carried a lot of weight with his opinions because he observed first, then spoke.

* He was highly respected by many.

* He was self-employed. Built & repaired many houses & buildings in Amite City and surrounding areas.

* Later in his life, he was employed by Shell Fabrication Homes as a carpenter. He remained employed at Shell until his death. He died on the job.

* Was a voice of comfort and challenge for many in the community and the family.

* He was able to work with those with whom he differed.

* He was a hard worker.

* He raised many crops as a farmer. My grand-father & his siblings had to participate in the planting & harvesting of the crops.

* If you ever heard Paul Harvey’s, “So God Made A Farmer,” then you know my great Grand-father, Deacon Jasper Leon Harrell, Sr. He raised everything that they ate.

* I wonder who among the young people will be the next pillar of your community.

* His 10 children had a pretty good head start, thanks to him and great grand-mother Josephine.

* My grand-father, Elder Herbert Harrell & all of his siblings had mighty boots to fill and they did.

* I present to you, my late Great Grand-Father Deacon Jasper Leon Harrell, Sr. & his loving wife-my Great Grand-Mother, Josephine Doretta Richardson-Harrell.

* A man and woman of faith that leaves a legacy for the Harrell Family and the Amite City community.
