From Annie Dillon (Jeannie's sister):

I am extremely sorry to share the sad news that my beautiful, wonderful, fantastically funny, kind sister Jeannie Dillon has passed. She is the hilarious and beloved wife of Donald Meixner and the wise, fun-loving, adored and adoring mother of Matthew, Peter, Donald and stepmom of Caity. Those of you who were blessed to know her know what an enormous loss she leaves behind. She was a warrior of love and fought her metastatic cancer like a lion, so that she could be with her family as long as possible. She left it all on the field and her beautiful heart succumbed on Friday morning September 28th at Mount Sinai Hospital in N.Y. We are bereft and in shock processing our loss. We are still working out the details of the arrangements and more information will follow here. This is what we know now: The wake will be Thursday, October 4th from 7-9 pm and Friday, October 5th from 4-8pm at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home. The address is 582 Springfield Avenue in Westfield, N.J. The funeral will be Saturday morning October 6th. Times and locations will follow soon. The house on Fanwood Avenue is open to all who want the company of good people while grieving and are at all hungry. We have a mountain of food and drink here. Kindly share this message with anyone in your network that may need this information. With love, Jeannie’s sister, Annie

Four years ago you left us. We have become better people for having known you. Your boys have inherited your qualities.
Matt, a giving upbeat talented person, Peter, introverted but demonstrative with his love and Donald, energetic, clever and creative. All three are joys to be around.
Love you always

It’s been three years since you slipped away from us and your pain ended but ours began. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of you. Usually, these days, it’s with a smile and with laughter, but the tears are always lurking. That life goes on seems so unfair and almost offensive. But it does and I try to practice acceptance. It’s not easy. I miss your hilarious takes on reality, your scarily insightful way of understanding instantly, almost without words, your wisdom, your wit, your bravery and bossiness. You have left a shockingly large, Jeannie-shaped hole in my life and in my psyche. I miss you terribly but I am also grateful for the times we had. I feel truly blessed to be your sister and to have had you in my life.

Always remember her smile and glee at becoming pregnant with Matthew. Can close my eyes and see her walking down the hall of UHS, her beautiful hair flowing behind her and everyone shouting “ Jeanie, Jeanie”

It's been a year and I miss you every day. You will never be forgotten, your big heart, your great hugs, and infectious laugh. My favorite days were when Grandma would say you and Annie were coming over, I couldn't sit still waiting for you both to get to the house. There must be a great party happening with you, Aunt Claire, Uncle Bobby, Patty, Uncle Gene, Genie Boy, Grandma, and Grandpa. Love you always.

I will always remember Jeannie by her tremendous smile, her enormous capacity for love and her pain-staking effort as a child to hide her candy from her mother. Jeannie brought us laughter and joy, always a bright spot in an otherwise cloudy day. Jeannie will live on in all our happy memories and although I haven't seen her in some time, it will always feel like it was just yesterday that we were together. I love you, Jeannie

While I didn't have a close lifelong relationship with her, Jeannie’s story in my world goes like this -
As an insecure teenager, there were times I found myself with a group of cool older kids, scared to be myself and scared not to be myself. One otherwise uneventful day, without any effort at all Jeannie destroyed that paralyzing youthful fear just by being who she always was. She just talked to me as an equal. She was cool and popular and older than me and all that meant nothing to her - she was just plain good hearted and struck up a normal conversation because I needed someone to be nice to me. There were, without a doubt, cooler people than me nearby. Years later, I remember vividly how much it meant to me to be treated so well when I was scared. And I try to make a point of doing that with those people I come across. It can't be overstated how influential those one or two first interactions with Jeannie were for me. So learning of her passing hurts. When there’s an impactful moment in your life that may seem insignificant to someone else, you want to thank them – and explain just what a great thing they did just by being themselves. I don't like that she's passed. The world is better when people like her stay in it. But maybe she's delivered so much to so many people that our lesson is to take what she gave us and amplify it. I think that's the least we can do. I hope when you find yourselves thinking about her, this is one story among a ton of other nice stories you think of.
May she rest in peace.

I got to know Jeannie when she was still working part-time for Rutgers Business School. I hired her to edit some research manuscripts that some foreign-born Ph.D. students were working. I found her very meticulous and helpful in her suggestions for improving the grammar and style of the papers. So I recommended her very highly when an opening for a permanent position opened up. Although I lost touch with her somewhat in the intervening years, I know she greatly impressed all those at Rutgers Business School that she came into contact with. She will be truly missed by all who knew her!
Rest in the bosom of God, Jeannie..... you are among those rare human beings who bring joy to all you meet.

Dearest Jeannie- I feel very lucky to have known you. We were colleagues at RBS. She always had a kind word, she was always cheerful, and her light was always beaming. It was infectious. She had a way of making you feel special. When you left her presence, you felt so much better for having spent a few minutes in her graces. How did she do that? How did she shine so brightly?  I am not sure if she knew the impact she had on me and others. Like Jeannie, I wanted to be a silver line in someone’s day. I will always remember her fondly for that. With her passing, I beseech all who love and admire her as I do, "Don't be the same- be better. Be more like Jeannie."
May God bless her husband, children, and all who are mourning dear Jeannie.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Jeannie during this past year. Even though brief, our times together were always filled with laughter and encouragement. Never a tear or dejected spirit - even when asked about her health. Always positive and uplifting no matter what was going on around her. Jeannie will always hold a very special place in my heart. I pray for peace and comfort for the family - may she continue to spread joy through each of us who have been changed by her joy!

Jeannie has been a shining star in our RBS PTL Office family for the last five years. Her vibrant personality, warm smile, love of life and love of her family made her a true joy to be around. Jeannie brought out the best in everyone and in turn everyone loved her. We will never be the same without her. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

I first met Jeannie 5 years ago when I on-boarded at Rutgers Business School as a PTL. She ALWAYS had a warm and ready smile with an infectious laughter that never wavered (even as we absent minded Professors failed to complete one or two of the forms she needed). It’s so sad to lose such a bright star as Jeannie. She made my transition into RBS so welcoming and I will miss her kindness and laughter that were uniquely hers.

I met Jeannie when Matt came to improv classes. I remember her warm, positive and bright spirit. Her smile lit up the room. I was working with Matt one day and we were interrupted by a call from Jeannie. I waited patiently while they spoke. What stands out the most for me is the way that Matt, a teenage boy, spoke to his mom and told her that he loved her. When I told him how beautiful that was he just said, "well she's the best, I love my mom." I'll never forget that. Jeannie, you will be missed and always loved.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jeannie at RBS, she was truly a remarkable person! It’s hard to narrow down all the things to say about someone that just had a way about her, I think everyone was drawn to her, she was just magnetic. Jeannie was one of kind, she was genuinely sincere and so down to earth, and it was ALWAYS a joy talking to her. She was a true warrior and I will always admire her strength and positive attitude, she definitely made me laugh… A LOT! My heart goes out to her family and friends. May you find comfort in the memories and love that Jeannie put out into this world. She left her mark that is for sure, I for one will always remember her and the light she shared!

Jeannie is surely one of Gods True Jewels, she shined where ever she went. Her warm smile and open embrace have touched the lives of everyone she came into contact with. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and made everyone felt loved and included. We love you Jeannie and though we needed you here and will always miss you, you will be one of the richest and treasured flowers in the garden above! Rest in peace and receive your rewards!

Jeannie's positive attitude, glowing vibrancy, upbeat outlook, and above all, an unwavering care for others made her a blessing to have as a colleague at the Rutgers Business School. Everything she did and said, gave all of us a glimpse into the vastness and beauty of her eternal spirit. She, most certainly, made our world a much better place and her memories will continue to inspire us to positively touch others' lives through our own thoughts and actions. Godspeed!

I'm truly heartbroken that Jeannie is no longer with us. I had the honor of meeting Jeannie at RBS. We shared many laughs about the struggles of motherhood . She was always a ray of sunshine, inspirational, and a joy to be around. I will miss her dearly. I'm sending you all strength to get through this very difficult time.

I had the great honor of working with Jeannie at Rutgers Business School and to me, she was a bright light! The love that she gave so freely to so many, the way she made all of us feel at home when we were in her presence and the way she made us all feel special and encouraged (even when she felt ill) only confirms that she was a rare beauty who shared her soul with us. She will be sorely missed but the love she planted will continue to shine around us and through us. Remember her love, spirit and joy -- pay it forward... “SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL, BUT NOT LIKE THOSE GIRLS IN THE MAGAZINES. SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL FOR THE WAY SHE THOUGHT. SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL FOR THE SPARKLE IN HER EYES WHEN SHE TALKED ABOUT SOMETHING SHE LOVED. SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL FOR HER ABILITY TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE SMILE, EVEN IF SHE WAS SAD. NO, SHE WASN’T BEAUTIFUL FOR SOMETHING AS TEMPORARY AS HER LOOKS. SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL, DEEP DOWN TO HER SOUL.” - F. Scott Fitzgerald

I met Jeannie a few years when my son and Donald became friends. I remember coming home and telling my husband about our meeting and saying, "I've only known her for a few hours but I'm already a big fan." To know Jeannie was to lover her. Over the time I was blessed to know her, there was never a time where we crossed paths that she failed to share a memorable moment and of course an hysterical story. Jeannie, I will always remember your huge caring heart and your contagious laugh. You will be sorely missed. Heaven definitely gained one of the very best. Love to you always.

After The Man Who Came To Dinner, Jeannie introduced herself to me and gave me a big hug, so kindly complimenting my performance. I told her how great it had been to have the opportunity to work with Matt, who is an attribute to her amazing parenting. She thanked me for taking care of Matt as a senior in the theater department and I promised I would I continue to do so throughout the year. Then again in the the Spring we spoke after Follies, where she was thrilled to hear
about my upcoming college plans and was extremely supportive of my pursuit. She also told my girlfriend and I that we were a beautiful couple. These conversations stick out to me because she was so engaging and sweet. I felt uplifted after talking to Jeannie. She was truly a kind soul and will be missed by so many.

I still remember when you sat at my kitchen table and told me that Don had proposed. You barely could contain your excitement. Then, you showed me your ring.
The same excitement when you told me you were pregnant. No one could have matched your excitement.  You were born to be a wife and mother.  You shall be missed my dear sister in law.

I remember visiting Jeannie about a month ago and she said, “We’re praying for a miracle.” It wasn’t until that moment that I realized that this unbelievably lovely, positive, happy, caring, selfless, kind and beautiful woman might actually be leaving this earth.
You couldn’t meet Jeannie and not fall in love with her. I remember Matt and my Sean playing baseball years ago, Don coaching and Jeannie coming to all the games with Peter and Donald. She was always smiling and laughing and loving those boys. She’d walk the kids to Franklin school, pushing that stroller every day. Always with a smile. She would watch the school performances proudly and somehow found time to volunteer her time, despite her busy work schedule. And despite her tremendous pain and suffering, she would still ask how I was.
Jeannie did not deserve the pain she endured and it’s hard to understand why this had to happen. But she did deserve all the love and admiration that her family and friends have for her. And she will never be forgotten because she was simply the best.

Jeannie was one of those people whose smile welcomed you and made you feel special. I, unfortunately, did not know her well but she made me happy and was always genuinely and sincerely interested in what I had to say about my life and the lives of my family. My deepest and sincerest sympathies to her babies and her partner, Don. Gone too soon. Much love to you all.

Her Life

Obituary

October 3, 2018

We are profoundly saddened to share the news of the passing of Jeannie Dillon on Friday, September 28, 2018. Jeannie was born in Orange, N.J. She was the youngest daughter of Peter and Claire Dillon and the youngest sister of Christopher, Matthew and Anne. She grew up in Union and graduated from Union High School in 1989. She attended Union County College and Rutgers University in New Brunswick. Jeannie worked as a program coordinator at Rutgers Business School in Piscataway.

In August 2001, Jeannie and Donald Meixner married. Together, they created a beautiful family including (step)daughter Caity, 23, and three sons, Matthew, 16, Peter, 14 and Donald, 10. They settled in Westfield.

Jeannie’s family was the center of her world. She was passionately devoted to her children and an insightful, funny, kind, caring mother. If mothering can be considered a “talent” then Jeannie was a natural. Yet, true sportswoman that she was, she developed her God-given talents through hours of play with the kids and by reading, consulting with her friends and Don and through inspired experimentation. She regarded good parenting as life’s greatest achievement. Donald, her husband and partner in the adventure of life, shares this mission. Together, through many trials, they kept the faith in each other and in the possibility of a better future for their family. They have worked incredibly hard to give their children every opportunity to develop into their best selves in a home filled with laughter, love, acceptance and lots of sporting equipment. And they have succeeded. The love and understanding between Jeannie, Don and their children is indescribable. They will carry her in their hearts forever. She will be profoundly missed by her family.

Jeannie was a much beloved friend and colleague. Her enormous group of friends and co-workers know how much she cared for them. There aren’t enough words to describe what she meant to the people who knew her from childhood until the end. Time, distance, illness and even exhaustion could not break the bond they shared. They will carry her in their hearts forever. She will be profoundly missed by her friends and co-workers.

Jeannie is survived by her grandmother, Anna Hardie; her husband, Donald Meixner, and their four children, Catherine, Matthew, Peter and Donald; her brothers Christopher and Matthew and their spouses Donna and Elena; her sister Anne and her spouse Peter; her aunts Margaret, Eileen and Catherine and their spouses; her uncles Lawrence, Thomas, James and John and their spouses; along with mother-in-law Maureen, her sisters-in-law Kathleen and Lauren and their spouses; her brothers-in-law Michael and Thomas and their spouses; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the following charities in Jeannie’s memory. Both organizations have as their mission to assist families while their loved one is being treated for cancer or cystic fibrosis. We know how important research and treatment is in beating both of these terrible diseases. But we feel that there is a grave and immediate need to assist families as they are dealing with the tremendous costs of illness. Don and Jeannie have been helped enormously by the support of Family Reach. During a very stressful period, their support was like a lifesaver.
