Jerald M. Dick passed away on May 20, 2020, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Known to his family and friends as Jerry, he was born on February 2, 1942 in Glendale, California to James and Jean (Gottleber) Dick. He had one younger brother, Jeffrey William.

Jerry attended high schools in California and New Jersey before heading to Long Beach City College on a basketball scholarship. His talent on the court led to a scholarship at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, then known as Nevada Southern University. It was there that he met his first wife, Teri Dianne Hayes.

Upon graduation, Jerry embarked upon a successful career in real estate development. He worked for Coldwell Banker, Melville Corporation, Pyramid Companies, and The Limited, Inc. before opening his own consulting firm in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1988. While working for Coldwell Banker early in his career, he was instrumental in the development of the Boulevard Mall on Maryland Parkway.  Jerry remained heavily involved with UNLV over the years as a member of the Board of Trustees for the UNLV Foundation, member of the UNLV Lee Business School’s Executive Advisory Board and as one of the founders of the Runnin’ Rebels Club to support the UNLV men’s basketball team.  In 2014, he received the honor of the Lee Business School Alumnus of the Year.

In 1999, Jerry met Deborah Lovitt Van Velzer. They married in 2004 and he became stepdad to Trey and Ryan. Jerry and Debbie spent their 15+ years of marriage traveling the globe, spending time with loved ones, and enjoying long days at the beach.

Jerry enjoyed traveling, golf, and music, but his greatest joys in life were his three children – Hilarie, Stefanie, and Jason – and his six grandchildren – Jaden, Avery, Kaylee, Max, Brendan, and Michael.

His final days were spent peacefully, surrounded by family, his favorite songs, and laughter.

At Jerry’s request, no formal funeral service will be held. Instead, his family asks that you please share your memories of him in the journal on this website. Thank you.

There are many great men in our world, and Jerry Dick certainly deserves to be included in that elite circle. Jerry was a man of high character, a true builder, a fine family man, and a true friend. Many lives have been improved through his example, his giving of time and resources, and his wise counsel and support. The world is a better place because Jerry was with us. I am honored to call him a friend.

I met Jerry probably the second day he arrived in Las Vegas to attend Nevada Southern (UNLV). It was just before basketball practice and we played a "pick-up" game 3 on 3. I just remember after the game thinking, this guy is good, real good! It followed that he was good, real good at a lot of things in life, especially his family life! Rest in peace Jerry!

This morning as I read that Jerry had passed away, A piece of my heart went with him. I just can’t help but feel the world has lost one of the finest men that has ever walked it”s path. Jerry went from being a new friend to advisor and mentor in so many ways. I loved our lunches as he would tell me about his life, the successes, the failures, but when he talked about his children and grandchildren (and Dean Hathaway) he lit up even more the usual. Although known for his successes in business, it was his commitment to his family that made him the hero he was to me. Also, It always appeared Jerry had the perfect life, but there were times in his life that were very difficult struggles, and as he shared those times with me, there was so much power from his vunerability, and as terrible as those times must have been, he would share what he learned. You never saw him without a smile and warm greeting for everybody That approached him. He came back to Las Vegas the past decade to use his money to give back to the community and especially UNLV. Unfortunately, he got discouraged with the difficulty of trying to give money that would make a difference, especially with past Athletic Administration, so decided he would do it himself. One day Jerry pulled in a walk on basketball player that although didn’t get much playing time, was an outstanding student. This young man dream was go to medical school, but came from a background that made that impossible financially. After he graduated, Jerry not knowing this young man that well, but hearing the stories from others made him the greatest offer this young man will ever receive. Jerry asked for the privilege of paying for every dime of his medical school cost. The only condition attached? The he never tell anyone about Jerry’s offer. The world needs more Jerry Dick’s. A year or two ago I ran into Jerry at the Ruvo Clinic where I am being treated for a terminal degenerative brain disease. He told me he had been diagnosed With a terminal issue, but asked me not to tell anyone, as he didn’t want any pity and was still living life to the fullest. That is Jerry Dick. He never needed anything from you, but he was always looking for a way to make somebody’s day, or life better, even when it was him that needed the love and prayers of others. But his mind worked one way, what can i do for others. You think about what the world would be like if there were more Jerry Dick’s. But, I got to experience what it would be like because of the time, lessons, impressions, and love that filled me with every time i was around Jerry. He has created a true legacy for so many of us to follow. All my love and best wishes to a family that was led by a true example of goodness and kindness. I for one am going to try and carry that example on in my life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry and Debbie about 10 years ago. It has been a pleasure getting to know them and talk about their travels as well as home moves. Every time we spoke even up to recently he was always a very happy and positive person. Jerry will be greatly missed by Debbie, his children, and all who have had the pleasure of knowing him.

I remember fondly working with Jerry on several UNLV Boards, and reminiscing about the good old days of Rebel basketball. He was always prepared, and though his manner was reserved, his thoughts and opinions were well-respected. He was a good friend, and I will miss his wit and wisdom. My sincere condolences to Jerry’s family, and a special thanks to Jason for allowing me to communicate with Jerry during his final days.

I met Jerry during a rebel basketball fundraising booster event years ago.
We talked about LV and UNLV.
Jerrys soft powerful personality was infectious to me and I liked him immediately. I found out more about Jerry and his success in business and in life from others. He never boasted about anything.
I remember talking to Jerry at one of our board meetings about six months ago I could tell something was different I just put it off to him being maybe a little tired.
True to the end as he knew he had terminal condition didn’t want to Burden me.
A true champion for Unlv as a player Alumni/Trustee. Love the pictures of Jerry with his children and grandkids that’s the Memory I have chosen.
I will miss you my friend!
Cheers buddy.

Debbie, I am so sorry for your loss. Jerry was a fantastic man, I feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to get to know him over the past few years. I loved hearing his stories about his world travels and his past business dealings. I enjoyed getting to see him in Newport Beach and playing golf at Big Canyon with him. He will be missed.

Jerry meant a lot to me. He gave our architectural firm a great opportunity when we were young and not yet very well established to design a great home for him and his family in Carefree. Thru the years he became a great mentor to me. He had his office in our building, and I would spent hours with him as he helped me understand retail design. I would see him off and on thru the years running into him in airports and catching up. We compared notes about his house in Mexico and mine further south. Out of the blue recently he and Debbie called again to do a little design work for them on their new home. It was a joy to meet with them, and catch up once again. When Debbie told me he had passed away I felt a great loss. I will always remember how he helped me, and I know that if in some way I can help someone else in a similar way it will be a tribute to Jerry.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all and your families, Jase, Hilarie, and Stefanie. I don't think I've ever seen a father express so much love for his children as Jerry did, and that extended beyond to your families and friends. I always remember his speech at Jason and Kim's rehearsal dinner and talking about how important it was to him to have family traditions. That is something I have carried-on with my own family. It was always great to see him and some of my best memories in life are direct result of him and his constant generosity. We wish you the best in this difficult time. I know how much you all will miss him.

I’m so sorry to hear about Jerry’s passing. I owe my career in retail real estate to Jerry, who hired me at Limited in 1986. While Jerry left Limited in 1988 and moved to AZ, we stayed in touch for many years. Visited with him on occasion in Scottsdale or in Newport Beach, playing golf or catching up over dinner. I regret that I had not seen Jerry in recent years, although my appreciation for him always remains. My prayers & sympathies go out to Debbie, and Jerry’s children & grandchildren.

Sincerely,
Jamie

Uncle Jerry

May 24, 2020
On behalf of my family - myself, Velko, Liliana and Maksim - we're all so sorry that Uncle Jerry passed and we all loved him very much. We last saw him at Thanksgiving at his beautiful home in Scottsdale and loved hearing his stories about his incredible real estate career days! He was always very kind, welcomed us warmly, and he always had a great laugh and had such a fun, dry sense of humor! He always was following a sports game when we would visit with him (usually football). The picture I'm attaching is from a memorial for his father - my Grandpa Jim - at my home last year, and it is such a fond memory as it was when our families were  all together, which doesn't happen enough. We enjoyed a beautiful meal and shared laughs and nice memories together. We're a lucky family to have had Uncle Jerry with us in our lives and hearts, and we will miss him greatly.
