....................................................................
Born in Lakeland, Georgia on October 20th, 1936, Jerilyn was the daughter of Luther and Ann Bridges.  She graduated valedictorian from Reidsville High School, where she was a member of the basketball team.  She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, where she was a cheerleader.  She earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire in 1974.
Jerry married Paul Campbell Young, Jr. on February 2, 1962.  They honeymooned in Aspen, the start of a lifetime of skiing.  Jerry was a certified part-time ski instructor at Waterville Valley ski area in NH for many years.
Jerry and Paul moved from Burlington, VT to Durham, NH in 1965, where they raised their three children and resided for over fifty years. Jerry taught elementary and middle school in Dover, NH.  After too many NH snow storms, Jerry and Paul spent over ten winters in Charleston, SC.  Jerry and Paul moved to Denver, Colorado in 2018 to live with their daughter Keller and son-in-law Nick Hutchinson.  She and Paul spent the last year at Balfour Assisted Living, where Jerry enjoyed the care and support she received from staff and other residents.
Jerry had many passions.  She was an avid birder and reader.  She became an expert sailor and navigator in her 50s, and loved taking the helm on sailing adventures with family and friends.  Her grandchildren fondly remember day trips and overnights at the Isle of Shoals.  She was a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club and led the social aspect of the annual club cruises for almost ten years.
Jerry loved playing tennis, and played competitively for many years.  She was ranked in the top ten in women’s tennis in New England at one time, and she and Paul were ranked number one in mix doubles as well.  In addition to her athletic pursuits, Jerry also loved to travel.  Her adventures started when her parents’ lived overseas for her father’s job as an agronomist, and she traveled well into her 70s.  She visited Turkey, Israel, Ethiopia, many countries in Europe, often to compete in World Medical Tennis tournaments, and to Kenya, Costa Rica, the Falkland Islands and Antarctica on birding trips.
Jerry was the kindest of people and was held in high esteem by her students, friends and family.  She was an amazing mother and grandmother and will be missed dearly by her husband, children, and grandchildren.

When I was four and my mother was 30, my father left the family. My mother spent the next 15 years sometimes employed, often in between jobs and generally not in very good health. My childhood and what I later became was based as much on the cumulative efforts of other family members as it was on those of my parents.
My mother’s sister, Jerry, was one of those relatives. In some pictures, my mother and Jerry appear very similar in feature. Both were petite, attractive and brunette. Both married doctors and had three children – two girls and a boy. However, my mother’s marriage which began with the sacrifice of her medical career for the convenience of her husband and his subsequent departure seven years later was the counterpoint to Jerry’s marriage which lasted almost 60 years.
As a pre-teen and later teenager, I spent summers in New Hampshire at Jerry’s serving as a mother’s helper with my younger cousins. Jerry was an active mother so we went all over – to Boston to the science museum, to the beach, to Strawberry Banke, to Shelburne museum. My sister and myself spent Christmas with her one year and learned to ski at Waterville Valley. It was Jerry who took me to tour colleges in the region. She came for parents’ weekend and to my graduation. Later on, my entire family visited her many times when we lived in Vermont and also when we were on home leave from Kuwait. Jon-Erik remembers bird watching with her and Alexander and it was she who introduced Alexander to one of the favorite shows of his childhood. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
She and her husband, Paul, were very generous with their houses and we often stayed in their second home in New Hampshire in the summers and later on in their condo at Daniel Island near Charleston. It was through those visits that our entire family explored those regions and both added to the childhood experiences of my own children. We enjoyed many wonderful dinners out at their invitation and had days at their home in Durham where we went out for all three meals.
Jerry died this week on Thursday, at the age of 84. To my uncle, Paul, and my cousins, Keller, Kate and Ian, I send my love and condolences. I also celebrate the positive legacy of their wife and mother, whose example of support, generosity, affection and a lifetime of new experiences enriched my life immeasurably. Thank you so very much, Jerry, for all that you did for me throughout your life and the example that you set.
