His Life
May 31, 2014

Jesus Francisco Pernas “Frank” born on July 16, 1924 in Havana, Cuba to Jose Pernas and Mercedes Carreras, of Spain. He was the fourth child of seven siblings: Jose, Guillermo, Antonio, Mercedes, Luis Francisco and Marta. He attended De La Salle preparatory School in Havana and later attended college to become an electrical engineer. Frank followed his father’s footsteps as a business man and entrepreneur. At an early age he was given the opportunity to take over his father’s businesses in Cuba. He married his childhood sweetheart and neighbor,Georgina on May 19, 1946 in Havana, where they had three children.

In 1961 Frank fled Cuba with his family to Miami, Florida during the Cuban revolution, leaving behind his businesses and all material possessions. Later that year,he moved to Hollywood, California to seek employment opportunities. Here he worked in the field of electrical engineering. He was a Plant Manager at Trend Mills, Pharr Yarns and became a partner in a textile company, La Costa Industries. Always an innovator, he invented several technologies for the electric industry, which would later come into common use. Although he would never receive proper credit for these technological advancements, they were a source of satisfaction to him as a personal achievement. It is here in California where he re-established himself and purchased the family’s first American home. In 1964, his youngest daughter was born.

In 1976, Frank moved his family to Florida to be closer with his eldest daughter. Shortly after moving, he started an export business selling electrical equipment to South and Central America. He went on to work for Miami Metrorail as an electrical technician where he received several awards and commendations for inventing a special battery charger that saved money for Metrorail. He retired at the age of 72.

With an intelligent mind and tireless work ethic, Frank accomplished everything he set out to do—and more. He was a strong-willed, determined man who never let obstacles get in his way. He was a man you could both count on to solve seemingly impossible problems, and also someone to confide in. Never seeking anything in return, he was gracious and kind. He instilled these values, and work ethic, in both his children and grandchildren, challenging them to live up to their full potential.

As the family patriarch, he was the pillar, providing guidance, support, and unconditional love. He viewed his family as his most important accomplishment, and with a great deal of pride. He was a man of great character, traditional conservative values, and quick wit. Frank was a genuine, honest, good man. He was a loving husband, father, and friend and will be missed by all who had the chance to know him.

He is survived by his wife (Georgina), brother (Luis Francisco "Paco"), his four children (Jesus, Tania, Alejandro, and Mercedes), ten grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

We will always love you!
