The Easter Bunny

September 22, 2012

Jimmy couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 years old. At the time, we lived on the three bedroom side of our duplex in Ordnance Park-- before daddy remodeled it and made it into a whole house.  Joellen and I slept in the end room, and Jimmy slept in the middle room- the one mom is in now.  It was the night before Easter, and he was so excited for the Easter bunny to come that it was hard for him to sleep.   He kept getting up to check if the Easter bunny had been there and left baskets with candy and toys.

Eventually, he went to sleep.  You could tell he was asleep, because before he had his tonsils and adenoids removed, he snored very loudly.  We all slept.  All of a sudden, we heard this loud scream, and then a mixture of yelling and crying.  We all jumped up, Jo and I on on the one end and mom and dad on the other to see what was wrong.  This cute little guy with a curl in front of his forehead  was running up and down the hall in his jammies, eyes wide open, just screaming.  When he finally calmed down, he told us that the Easter Bunny had come, but now he wasn't going to leave our baskets because he had scared him off.

Jim had gotten up to hunt for his basket, and right when he got into the the living room, the paper carrier had jerked opened our screen door (which has always had that chain across it), and the chain had caught when he was leaving the Gazette.  I guess it sounded like an explosion to a little boy!  Anyway, mom assured him that if he went back to bed and settled down, the Easter Bunny would come back.  No harm, no foul.  The Easter Bunny is used to these kinds of things.      After a "dink a otter," he went back to bed, and was soon snoring again.  And the Easter bunny must have come, because we all had baskets of eggs, candy and toys in the morning.
