A year has passed since you left. You still holds a place in our minds and hearts. Some days, I think of you for no particular reasons, some days, I think of you when I am doing something which we had chatted about. Like every time I mix the filling for making 饺子, I always think of you, remembering our giggles about a falsely claimed specific way of stirring the mix. I made 饺子 again today. Thinking of you, of your sweet laughters and kind voice.

Jingqi, I don't know why I suddenly think of you this morning, probably in a zoom meeting, I glanced someone's last name is same as yours. Then I googled your name, found this shocking news which it's hard to believe. With tears, I reviewed the photo collections, it's you, your sweet smile!
I met you and your family in fall 1998, when I started my first job in University of Hull. There were a few days gap between my first day at work and the flat I rented. You kindly offered me to stay in your house. I remembered you made nice breakfast, with your soft voice, you reminded your daughter Yun, a lovely elementary school girl, to eat an apple.
Then I often ran into you and your husband, our offices were located at the same floor in Ferens building, I so admired your talent on physics research.
A few months later, you told me you were starting a new job at Queen Mary soon. I recalled in my trip to London, I visited your home and had a wonderful dinner. You walked me to the underground station that evening. Next year, I left UK, we lost connection.
I should have looked for you earlier to support you. In recent years, I have involved in a local Chinese cancer support society, where volunteers work very closely with cancer patients to support them and their families. I am sorry I wasn't able to help you, but you were brave and strong. You are a successful scientist, a great mother and wife, a warmhearted friend. I was so lucky to meet you, and I will remember you forever.

I came to Kent as a lecturer in the same time period as did Jingqi. We have been a friend and colleague to each other since then. For many years, we have passed by the Kent Bioscience Building and said hello to each other in the early morning in order to give lectures at 9am in time. We have shared a similar philosophy for conducting teaching and research in university while we have had some discussions on joint researches in her field. Jingqi has always been warm and generous to her colleagues, students and friends. She was working remarkably hard and productively over 20 years.

I am very sorrow to learn that Jingqi has left us and rested peacefully in heaven.
Jingqi may be gone from our sights but she is never gone from our hearts.

Message from e-card by Stefano Biagini:

I was very saddened to hear the news of Jingqi's death. I have known and worked with Jingqi for best part of twenty years. We worked closely shortly after her appointment as lecturer when we were both Admission officers for our respective programmes. Her legacy in what she achieved lives on in having helped secure the future for staff in the School. Jingqi was focussed, professional and always a pleasure. The world is poorer for her loss.

I first met Jingqi in 2009, when I interviewed for starting a PhD with her. From the very start, I was struck by how pleasant, welcoming and kind she was. I started my PhD with her later the same year. She supported me throughout and was understanding of any difficulties and helpful without fail. She was friendly to everyone, helpful and always tried to make available every chance for people to succeed. She inspired me in her dedication. I began working at the University after completing my studies with Jingqi as a colleague. In this, too, she was immensely supportive and I continued to learn a great deal from her. I have no doubt that she has brought a bright and friendly light to the lives of so many. It has been my privilege to have known her.

We first met Jingqi and Fei in Hull during 1994-1995 and have kept in contact for 27 years since then, holding an unbreakable and long-lasting friendship. Jingqi, Fei and Yunyun visited us in Huddersfield in 1998 when Yunyun played with our daughter. The cherished memory was like happening yesterday.

For many years, Jingqi has been my aspirating source, both in academic and personal life and an unreachable role model. She is a gifted scientist with talent, hardworking and perseverance. She is also a dedicated wife and mother and a thoughtful and caring friend. I have so many good memories of our telephone chats and the highly similar thoughts we shared.

Jingqi’s love and quality of life leave an indelible imprint in our memories …

Jingqi was our colleague in the School of Physical Sciences, University of Kent. We are greatly saddened to learn that she has passed away due to illness.
We always valued having Jingqi as a colleague. She worked hard for our School, and made key contributions, including a large amount of undergraduate teaching. Although we are not expert in her research field, we can see that she had success, supervising a number of postgraduate research students, and publishing well-cited papers. One of her PhD students is now a Lecturer in our School. We found her research achievements all the more impressive because she changed her specialism from engineering to astrophysics during her academic career.
We know from conversations with Jingqi that she cared deeply about her teaching and research, and she was always motivated to do these activities to the best possible standard. At the same time she was a private, calm, and modest person. She was a true scholar, and we will always be inspired by her dedication, hard work, and fortitude.
We had social conversations with Jingqi over the years and she spoke with the greatest admiration about her daughter's talents and academic career.
Our deepest sympathy to Jingqi's family and friends.

Her Life

The life of Jingqi Miao, a truly remarkable person and an inspiration to everyone.

July 6, 2021
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr Jingqi Miao, dearly beloved wife and mother. She left us peacefully on July 2nd 2021 at home in Chestfield, Kent, surrounded by her husband, daughter and son-in-law.

Jingqi was born on the 11th June 1958 in the city of Nanchang, in Jiangxi Province in China. She attended 11th High School of Jiangxi as a graduate of the class of 1976. During her adolescence time, she was admired by her classmates and highly praised by her teachers because of her outstanding academic records and truly lovable personality, although she was attacked constantly by the extremely left-wing of the Chinese political system because of her father’s history of “political in-correction”. She then enrolled as a student at Jiangxi Normal University, where she obtained her BSc in Physics, and then her MSc in Theoretical Physics.  She remained as a lecturer and then a highly esteemed associate professor within the Department of Physics. It was here that she met her colleague Dr Fei Long, whom she married in Jiangxi on February 1st 1985. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage full of life, spirit and laughter for 36 years throughout which they were a successful and inspirational couple to all around them, not only in their dedication to their academic research but in their unwavering commitment to each other. It is therefore no surprise that when they welcomed a daughter, Yun Long, on the 21st July 1990, they went on to become the most loving parents anyone could have asked for, not only in their utmost devotion to every part of her upbringing but in addition setting her an invaluable example of determination, perseverance and courage. They had such a resounding influence on her, that upon coming of age she chose to follow them in pursuing an academic career in physics research after graduating from Cambridge University.

In the year between 1992 and 1993, she took up a visiting fellowship at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, having for some time expressed an interest in conducting research abroad. Having greatly enjoyed her stay, she went on to emigrated to the U.K. in 1994 with her husband and daughter, settling in Hull in order to begin her Ph.D in the Theoretical Physics group at the university. During her time in Hull, she was a most dedicated scientist who committed herself resolutely to her research, which she most remarkably balanced with being a devoted parent and actively immersing herself in embracing a brand new culture that was far removed from the world in which she had grown up. At the same time, she established in Hull a tight-knit circle of warm friends with fellow Chinese members of the community who also resided within the area, whom she remained in close contact with for the rest of her life and considered a second family to the family she missed so dearly back in China. After successfully defending her doctoral thesis on ‘The Theory of Magnetic Polarons and Magnetic Field Effect in Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors’ in 1998, she began postdoctoral research in the Electrical Engineering Department at Queen Mary University of London. Her research topics included simulations on collisions between spacecraft and space debris, and on radiation triggered star formation in bright rimmed clouds. In 2001 she took up a position as Lecturer in Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Kent, where her research covered molecular cloud evolution and star formation. Over the last 20 years, she lived in Canterbury and Whitstable, where she spent many moments outside of work relishing the fascinating historic landmarks and gorgeous nature scenery, often visiting gardens, castles and stately homes with her family in her spare time. In addition, she was a keen reader of classical English literature, with Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and Elizabeth Barrett Browning ranking amongst some of her favourite authors.

Throughout her life, Jingqi was not only an accomplished and diligent researcher, but also served as a warming influence to everyone she met due to the remarkable person she was. At work, she dedicated her heart and soul to the students she taught and supervised, supporting them in every way possible, which also resulted in her being constantly awarded ‘Teacher of the Year.’ Outside of work, she was a resounding influence on those around her. She was renowned in many circles for her unwavering empathy and compassion towards others, which constantly reflected in the selfless way she always sought to be there for anyone when needed. Most of all, she was a most devoted wife and companion to her husband, and a mentor, confidante and guardian angel in every way to her daughter, whose lives she enriched greatly in every moment and by whom she will be dearly missed forever. Even when she was tragically diagnosed with cancer in 2018, she will always be remembered deeply in our hearts for the humanity and kindness she continued to show others amidst her ordeal, and the indomitable courage and perseverance she steadfastly displayed until the very end.

Dr Jingqi Miao is survived by her loving husband, daughter, father and two older sisters.

Yun's PhD graduation

July 26, 2021
In October 2017, Jingqi's daughter Yun successfully defended her PhD in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews. Although Jingqi was very much overjoyed to hear the news, unfortunately, around this time Jingqi had commenced radiotherapy treatments shortly after being diagnosed with sarcoma cancer. As a result she (and Fei) were unfortunately not able to travel to St Andrews in order to attend Yun's graduation, but they were heavily acknowledged as follows in the acknowledgements of Yun's PhD Thesis:

'I would like to dedicate this thesis to my wonderful family; to my parents, Dr Jingqi Miao and Dr Fei Long, for their unconditional love and for inspiring me to pursue a PhD degree by encouraging my interest in Physics and setting a stellar example.....'

First Impression

July 11, 2021
by Qin Xu
I met Jingqi first time in summer 1995, in Hull.  The instant warmth that I felt meeting Jingqi that moment is still fresh as though it were yesterday.
Looking back, it must have been tough juggling a PhD, being a mum and being a home maker at the same time.  Yunyun was about 5 and just started school.  That day, Yunyun came back from school with a friend.  Like most of 5-year olds, she chatted and ran around with her friend when they entered the house.  She was polite, observant and interested in a visitor to her shared household.  Without prompt, she soon settled down and started reading her school book followed by Chinese work.  Having no children of my own at the time, it seemed un-extraordinary.  But looking back, I can only admire the discipline Yunyun showed and the parenting she had from Jingqi and Fei.  JIngqi came home later to prepare dinner for the family.  Her soft spoken voice was warm and sincere.  She must have been in a hurry as she would later return to her lab after dinner, but she took her time to greet me and chat with me.  As she moved on to prepare her dinner, she turned her attention to Yunyun, checked her day in school and checked if she had done her work.  I don't remember if Yunyun went to the lab office with Jingqi, but I remember Jingqi discussing with Yunyun what Yunyun would/could do after dinner while she would return to her work in the evening.  When I entered the kitchen the next morning, Yunyun was already sitting at the dining table.  Jingqi was still busy preparing lunch while checking and making sure Yunyun would eat everything that she had prepared for breakfast.  Yunyun wasn't keen on the egg, Jingqi reasoned with her about nutrition.  Thinking back, it is remarkable how easy it seems that Jingqi could have very calmly persuaded a 5-year old to finish her breakfast for nutritional reasons.
Our first child was born that year in 1995 and quickly followed by the twins.  Jingqi had always showed a genuine interest in the children, so in summer 1998, we went to Hull and visited Jingqi in their newly rented house.  It would be the busiest time when she was finishing her PhD and looking for a job position.  But she took sometime off her work and waited for us at home.  She was so excited and kept on laughing as the three little ones filled the room.  She kept on saying: "Shame that Yunyun is in school, she would be so happy to see the babies!".
Our paths crossed again in Leicester, but soon she moved on to London when Yunyun was about 10.  Jingqi's focus then was on schooling for Yunyun, she must have done so much search and study - without today's Internet, about the education system and schools in the UK.  As I realised later how different the UK's education regime is from what we went through.
We were mostly not geographically close in the 26 years since 1995, nor were we in constant contact.  But Jingqi is a dear friend close to my heart.   Apart from our families, Jingqi was the first person whom I contacted when my children successfully got into their choice of universities, because I knew she cared and she would share my happiness.  We shared the same passion: parenting.  Each year (apart from in 2020), we sent Christmas cards, then we would call each other around Christmas time (the only time of a year, Jingqi would not be working) and chat for hours.  Apart from very briefly touching on Fei's and her works, Jingqi filled me in with such pride and such joy about Yunyun's every step over the years, rightly so.  Jingqi's life continues, in Yunyun, as well as in our memories.
