ForeverMissed

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, my loved one, Joan Q. Strehle, 67 years old.  She was born on March 3, 1951, and passed away on February 27, 2019, just shy of her next anticipated birthday party.   Just six months before, we celebrated our 47th Wedding Anniversary. The picture above is from that event.  We will remember her forever -- and I will miss her terribly.  This will be a permanent site, which I will add additional photos of family and dear friends as well as some of Joan's favorite music.

Among the most memorable things about Joan were her constant smile, her pleasant nature, and her silliness.  She was simply a generous and caring person with everyone she knew.  She had a very easy temperament and liked to keep things simple. Joan was always nice to everyone and friendly to all, and always courteous; making friends quickly.

She always said please and thank you to everyone, and loved her creatures, big and small, pets or those in the wild; bugs and crawly things were always returned to the outdoors.  She loved her gardening, feeding the birds, doing her puzzles and sudoku, and overly decorating for each holiday.  She loved her music, her opera and classical pieces, several of her favorites are part of this site.

Joan loved flea markets, garage and yard sales, and estate sales; basically, she loved a good deal and she always bought something else to add to our overstuffed house, grounds and gardens.  She loved to volunteer over the years, and was an active member of Garden Clubs, the Rose Society, the Orchid Club, Begonia Club and with a variety of activities over the years. It was only in the past 6 months that she began slowing down her routines and activities.

Joan never complained to anyone about anything--even when it was becoming more and more obvious that her five and a half year battle with cancer was finally catching up with her.   We all became victim to the false belief she was going to be with us forever; that she was going to beat this life-claiming disease.   But Joan was the first to sense she was failing.  In her special way, she accepted the inevitable and stayed strong, kept her sense of humor and went with the style that so easily identified her...with grace.

I will always remember that she did not stay angry very long and was all too forgiving of an often annoying and mean husband--who will regret always not apologizing more frequently and kissing and hugging more often.  My darling, I am happy that you are free of illness, and I know you are happy and those surrounding you are blessed by your presence and happy you are with them.

Remember, "I loved you yesterday, I love you still.  I have loved you always and always will."

A "Life Celebration" Service will be held at 2:30 pm on August 21, 2019, our 48th wedding anniversary, at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery near Newtown, PA.  Further information and details will be provided by mid-July for those wishing to attend.  Please contact George Strehle, 561-376-3610.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to The American Cancer Society or The National Hospice Foundation in Joan's name would be greatly appreciated.

My dearest Joan,
It has been three years since you left us on your journey with the Angels. It seems just so short a time ago I would hear you come through the door and hear your gleeful greeting to me and Katie. I think of you everyday, and a part of me keeps hoping this was all a dream from which I'm still hoping to awake and find you in your favorite chair, having a coffee and doing a puzzle. And a cheerful "good morning" and a kiss.
I will keep on my dreams and hopes, but I take some comfort that I will be with you this year. And what a joyful reunion that will be! Still love you with all my heart. Your Peety.

Happy 70th Birthday, sweetie! I miss celebrating with you today and watching you open your presents. Oh, how you loved presents! And how you would toss back a gag gift or something you did not like, much to everyone's delight.
I am sure you are enjoying today in a far better and more beautiful place, with your typical delighted smile on your face! Perhaps I will be with you to celebrate my next birthday, which would be the happiest one of all.
"Oh, boy. Lots of presents!"

You can't believe how much I miss you on the second anniversary of your flight with the Angels. I am so sorry I could not come and visit you today, but I believe as you watch over me you know why. You are in my heart and mind every day, morning and night and throughout the long lonely hours of the day. I still believe this is a terrible nightmare I beg to awake from...and find you sitting in your favorite chair playing Suduko. But as time passes so, so slowly, I realize I will have to wait to see you again when the Angels come to take me to you. I truly hope that will not be so long in the future. Until then, know that I love and miss you with all my heart, every moment. My wife, my friend, my very life.

Joan, seeing it is your birthday and remembering you today. Its hard to believe the time has passed. Your ability to make me laugh, I still laugh at some of the funny things you said and did, and your courage during your illness was a true inspiration. I only hope you are in a better place, and you so deserve to be there.

I first met Joan circa 1971. A gorgeous young lady with a quick wit. She met George and finally succumbed to his pursuit. A great couple was formed and years of fun began. It was a pleasure for this old soldier to call the Strehles good friends. Almost 50 years have passed and i still smile when I hear her name mentioned. She was the best.

Joan, your passing leaves a void in a world where kind, compassionate people are hard to find. Your willingness to always help a friend or loved one, your great sense of humor, and your bravery and stoicism during your illness, are an inspiration to anyone you knew. RIP friend and know your memory is a blessing.

Her Life

An Abreviated Life Story

March 25, 2019

Joan was one of 8 siblings, the second oldest of 7 girls and a brother.  The family grew up in Collingswood, NJ, and later moved to Oaks, PA.  Joan's mother, Martha, was a nurse and her father, Joe, a career railroad, man.  Joan graduated from Montgomery Community College in Pottstown, PA in 1970 and married George Strehle in 1971, moving to Washington, DC shortly thereafter to begin a career with GEICO Insurance company while her husband continued his career with the Federal Government.  Joan worked as a Supervisory Claims Manager and in 1998 transferred to Nashville, TN, becoming a supervisor with the Tennessee State Insurance Commissioner.

In 1982 another transfer by her husband landed Joan back in Washington, DC, for two years, then to Manhattan Beach, CA where she joined the Defense Department conducting high level security clearances on military personnel and civilian contractors.  In late 1995, Joan was diagnosed with a bout of thyroid cancer which was successfully treated, then, still employed by DOD, transferred again back to Washington, DC, until George retired in 1998.

Joan transferred ,one final time in 1999 to Boca Raton, FL, where she retired in 2006, spending her time traveling, gardening, particularly raising orchards, and volunteer work.  On July 19, 2013, however, prior to a much awaited trip to Alaska, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer and began intensive chemo therapies and surgeries at M.D. Anderson in Orlando, FL, where she and her husband stayed until the day before Thanksgiving, 2014 when she was declared in remission.  A seeming normal life resumed with travel and enjoyable experiences with family, friends and neighbors, and learning to golf.

Having had enough of Florida and longing  for a place a little further north that had real "seasons," both decided on Fayetteville, GA and moved into a beautiful house in August 2015 with plenty of gardens, fruit and flowering trees, and roses.

Her remission was short-lived, however, when she again was diagnosed with the cancer having returned in February, 2016, where she began treatments and another surgery.  For the next 3 years Joan continued battling with the same spirit as she had from the very outset.  After some 5 1/2 years of treatments, Joan's cancer flared up very aggressively in the last couple of months, and quickly and finally claimed a very brave and beautiful lady, peacefully at home, on February 27, 2019. Thankfully, she suffered little and even enjoyed the company of visiting family and friends right up to the end.  She died while her husband held her head in his hand,  and with her sister-in-law and best friend for 48 years, Theresa Hughes, holding her hand.

She is survived by her husband,George, her mother,Martha Quigley; her sisters, Lynn Ellis, Ann Quigley, Elaine Hofmann, Carol Royce, Susan and Michael Quigley.
