Dear Mr. Nagel,

Your online article “The Chromatic Modal Scale: Proper Spelling for Tonal Voice-Leading” has been nothing short of a revelation and a huge help to me.  With its clear, well-structured argument and many examples this article has greatly increased my confidence as an amateur composer, knowing that my sheet music now adheres to such erudite instruction and principles.

Yours sincerely,
Matthew

53rd Street

February 27, 2021
Dad's opera "53rd Street" was his DMA dissertation at UT Austin, 1992. It is a one and a half hour, two-act operatic portrayal of contemporary New York City. The original libretto was written by University of Texas Professor Seth Wolitz. A theoretical analysis of the work was provided along with the score. It examines the lives of two homeless men on 53rd Street in New York City, between 5th and 6th Avenues, and the reactions toward them from various facets of society, including the church, art institutions, businesses and tourists.  The opera was premiered at Sursa Performance Hall on the campus of Ball State University on April 12, 2007 with a subsequent performance on April 15, 2007.

Tammie Huntington's DMA dissertation was about this opera. "Performance Practice of Jody Nagel's Opera Fifty-Third Street: World Premiere Performance at Ball State University." (Ball State University, 2008).
