John's big footprints

September 19, 2012

As the weather starts to cool here in mid-September, Joan and I started thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas. Years ago when we used to have an annual Christmas party, Rhonda and John were always the first people we added to the invitation list. They were both always so much fun that the party wouldn't be the same without them. Of course, there were the times when John was "too much fun" at the party and had to be sent to our garage for a "time out". John's banishmnet could be created by any number of offenses: 1. Open, and sometimes heated discussions of politics or religion 2. Eating more than his share of sausage stuffed mushrooms 3. Cornering an unsuspecting guest to explain the finer points of optimizing the weight balance of a pinewood derby car...or a nearly-infinite number of other real or perceived party violations. In the end, it was almost always tied to his wanting to smoke a cigarette or cigar. To accomodate John's garage banishment, I used to outline John's footprints in chalk on the garage floor...very much in a crime scene format. This chalk outline identified John's corner of the garage and became a regular part of our party preparation. Of course it was all a big joke, but this was one of the first tasks we undertook as we prepared for the Christmas shindig. Always a stickler for accuracy, I wanted to be sure the chalk footprints were the right size, and anyone who really knows John, knows just how big those feet were. I used two boxes of chalk over the years we had the Rhonda and John over for the party. If/when we ever have a Christmas party again, you can be sure he will be memorialized...in the garage...on the floor.....in chalk!

We miss you big guy,

It was Dad's fault!

February 24, 2012
Dad had spent all day washing and waxing his beloved Fiat Spider convertible, so as a treat, he took us out for ice cream. Since he did not want the ice cream to melt all over his newly polished leather seats, he told us to hold the ice cream cones over the side of the car. The picture tells the rest of the story!!!

Bullet Hole

February 23, 2012

Being around John was always worth a laugh.  He had me in stitches so many times.  The best story was about the time he was checking his gun in he and Rhonda's bedroom and it went off and put a bullet hole in their bedroom window.  As he was leaving for a Canadian fishing trip that day he had no time to get the window fixed before Rhonda returned from an out of town business trip.  So he taped the bullet hole with duck tape and moved a huge plant from the corner of the bedroom in front of the bullet hole, thinking Rhonda would never notice anything amiss.  And then left for Canada.  As he is telling this story I was laughing so hard I was crying and my sides hurt for two days.  I will greatly miss his humor.

Wedgewood Old Pal Champs

February 23, 2012

John was very proud of this accomplishment.  He and I beat 5 mostly much younger opponents to win the 2007 Championship.  He paid for new wheels with his winnings.

Got Wing?

February 23, 2012

John, being the perfectionist that he was, thought there was room for improvement (even with Porsche) when it came to the Cayman model's rear wing. In typical John fashion, he set out to develop the best wing (aftermarket or OEM) for the car. About a year of prototyping, testing and continuous improvements, John hit the market with "The Wing" and the "XL Wing." Previous vendors online had trouble with the quality and/or quantity, but not John.

Porsche Club - HPDE Event April 2011

February 23, 2012

John and I attended these High Performance Driver Education events on a regular basis. The April events were always ify as far as weather goes. John thought it would be funny to stand in front of this sign all bundled up, snow appearing on the ground. It was these antics that made being around John so much fun.
