His Life

Mr. Whipple was born Monday, June 30, 1919, in Quitman, Georgia, the son of the late Florrie Jarrell and John Franklin Whipple, Sr.  He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1947.  Mrs. Whipple worked as an accountant for West Point Pepperell for 28 years.  He was a member of the West Point Public School Board, where he eventually served as chairman. Mr. Whipple was a long time active member of the West Point Lions Club and treasurer of the Riverside Country Club.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of West Point, serving as treasurer and other various roles within the church.  He was a founding member of the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out).  Mr. Whipple’s interests included golf, traveling and University of Georgia football.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished his time with his family.

 

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Anne Hawkins Whipple; her daughter, Cheryl Whipple Morrison (Jamie); her son, Bill Whipple (Joleen); her grandchildren, John Morrison, Jenna Morrison Perry (Lane), Sara Whipple Marchbanks (Jamie), Sam Whipple and Shelley Whipple; her great grandchildren, Bailey Morrison and James Marchbanks, Jr.  Mr. Whipple was preceded in death by her grandson, James Mitchell “Jay” Morrison, III.
