John was my classmate in high school and indeed he was a kind man who desired the best for everyone. It was a shock to learn of his demise. To the Macharia family may the Lord continue to comfort your hearts. We will forever miss John.

John was a good man, a gentleman. That’s how I’ll forever remember him, I’m grateful that He was comfortable enough to confide in me, cry to me, sometimes with me...
John was what we would say, soft on the inside hard on the outside.
He loved his son so much that’s one thing I knew. His son was His life. He enjoyed going for Sunday lunches at mamba village plus the dawas
Miss you buddy. Forever in my heart!

I first met John in 2011 when we were attending Rhino Charge. I remember Sophie saying that I can ride up with John & Adam as he had space in his car.
As his reputation preceded him, I was a little concerned with the thought of the long drive. Armed with my Dutch courage, I jumped in his car with seat coolers which fascinated me; John, Adam, Matthew & I set off in what was to be one of my favourite road trips. The conversation flowed effortlessly and I remember thinking what a nice guy and how everyone has got it so wrong about him. That was the beginning of our friendship that promised never a dull moment when we met.
Rest well John. Missed and loved forever.

Your smile and warm hugs are missed.

John, you dreamt big, and had a grand vision which would have altered Nairobi's sky-line. Your excitement and enthusiasm as a Developer rubbed off on us, your team of Consultants. May your vision live on, and come to fruition one day. Much respect and admiration always, Liz

Tribute to John Macharia from “Team 23”
John joined “Team 23” AKA Team “Wazee” after his first attendance at the Rhino Charge in 2011. He was there with Adam as a spectator, following the team on its track around the course. For anyone who’s been to a Charge event, you will know the thrill of it: the road trip; the overnight stay between stops; the landscape; the scrutineering; plotting the course; essentially the turf for intrepid minds and testosterone-laden men – although there are some ladies teams!
True to form, John immediately decided he wasn’t satisfied with just being a spectator, he wanted “in”, and thus began a long and illustrious “career” as a member of Team 23.  There were laughs, fights, and accusations of “Nakumatt Shopping” or references to “General Tommy Franks”. There were heavy-headed, dehydrated sessions, some fights, a lot of running, but mostly a lot of laughs with many stories to be retold.
What few know is that for John it was not just about taking part and hanging with the “Matope” crew; it was deeper and about a commitment to raise money for conservation and his mantra to bequeath a resourceful mother earth for future generations. John was an integral part of the team 23 efforts to raise almost Kes. 50 million over the years. Last year Team 23 raised Kes. 15 million, the highest ever sponsorship raised in the events’ 29-year history. John had already pledged to raising Kes. 5 million for the 2018 Rhino Charge. John’s commitment to supporting conservation was not limited to Rhino Charge. He supported many other environmental initiatives; among others, he contributed generously to fencing the Peponi Road section of Karura Forest.
John it is ironic and yet befitting that we are burying you here - close to the fence you have put so much passion into building and preserving.
John was many things to many people, but to Team 23, John was a core member and a true friend: who else would stand around having a soda and a cigarette while watching his teammates battling to get the car down a cliff, in no hurry to rush to help ;-) Who else would sit for hours, post-route planning, debating the wisdom of King Solomon and reflecting on Emmanuel Kant – his favorite philosopher – for hours after the event; incidentally, the team has never completed the full course since John joined the team, a fact that we reminded John nudge-and-wink every year the event came up.  And then, who else could manage to be the centre of ridicule yet all the while laughing at himself, head cocked to side with that smirk and smile, that look which always spoke volumes.
To say that John’s absence on the team will be felt is an understatement. John was an incredible and committed friend, a total non-team player but a friend who never hesitated to lend a hand. Difficult and crazy but passionate and funny, all rolled into one small but powerful, dynamic and enigmatic man.  We loved John and embraced him with all his eccentricities and all that special stuff that made him “John”.
While we will be charting the course and competing in the 2018 Rhino Charge event you, John, will be very much charging with us and we are dedicating this year’s run of Team 23 to you.
We will miss you….John, until we meet again, Godspeed.

His Life

Tribute to John Gichia Macharia

April 24, 2019

A tribute for John Gichia Macharia - loving son, devoted father, affectionate and loyal brother, successful business man - and a brilliantly complicated individual.

EARLY LIFE

John was born on 3 August 1969 in Nairobi. He was the first child of Dr. Samuel Kamau Macharia and Serah Njeri Macharia.  John was a demanding baby who always wanted to be held and gave his young parents many sleepless nights.  His demanding nature doubled when his brother Karanja was born and would demand this his mother put down baby Karanja and hold him instead.

SCHOOL LIFE

John started his school life at Msingi Bora Kindergarten.  He went on to St. Mary's Primary School for his primary education at then to Alliance High School where he completed his 0 Levels.  Thereafter, his father made the decision to send John to Canada.  He joined Cantab College in Toronto at Grade 9, proceeded to York University in Toronto and later transferred to Trent University in Ontario.

FAMILY LIFE

In 1998 John met Lisa Amenya at a party hosed at the Goan Gymkhana Club in Nairobi. Many of John's friends remember that evening well and with lots of laughs.

As told by John's friends, he spotted Lisa across the dance floor and decided he needed to know her, immediately!  He asked several friends "who is she?" His queries provided none of the information he had hoped for.  Ultimately, John made the decision to closely trail (some may have described it as stalking) Lisa around the venue all night. It was a loonnngggg night.

John and Lisa enjoyed a whirlwind romance - thrilling, with lots of highs and some lows. In love, John and Lisa had one child - Adam Kamau Macharia.

Every person who knew John knows Adam, even if only through John's stories. Adam was John's baby, his munchkin, his pride and joy.  He loves his son very much!

Adam was the most important person in John's life.  Lisa's favourite story of John as a new father is from Adam's first night at home, after having been discharged from hospital. Adam had a blocked nose that evening, but nothing that his mom thought was serious.  John disagreed.  Adam did not spend his first night at home.  Instead, John and Lisa took Adam back to the hospital to have Adam's blocked nose assessed by Aga Khan Hospital casualty staff.  Adam's paediatrician called Lisa the following day to tease her about it.

'Baby Adam' looked just like his father.  Friends often referred to Adam as John's mini-me.On Adam's first birthday one friend, Althea McCourt, bought 'baby Adam' a pair of khaki trousers and a blue button-down Oxford style shirt to match the clothing John wore daily at that time in his life.  John's mini-me was complete.

All of you know - John was the best father he knew how to be. He took his role as a father seriously, loved Adam with intensity and ensured that Adam lacked for nothing.  John is an outstanding model of intense and unwavering  love and commitment to family; he is a model of hard work, smarts and ingenuity, and success greater than most of us dream of.

CAREER LIFE

On returning back from Canada in 1994 and joined his dad and aunty at Royal Card Ltd as a marketing executive - recruiting credit card holders for the company which at that time held the Diners Club Card franchise for Kenya. It was during this time that John learnt the art of running a successful business.  After much thought and consultation with them he started his own journey in business.

In 1996 he founded his first company Triple A Capital, a pioneer insurance premium finance company in East Africa. At Triple A, John was the negotiator and steered the company's strategic direction growing the business dramatically due to his dedication, discipline, his ability to craft lucrative and astute deals - and headstrong determination to be more successful than everyone else.

In 2005 John founded Directline Assurance Company Ltd, which grew to be the largest PSV underwriting company in Kenya. He drove all over the country growing the business and signing on customers who had been largely ignored by most large insurance companies in the country.  His ability to adapt to situations and convince a large part of the sector to sign onto Directline was driven by his charm and sometimes brutal candor, which endeared him to many PSV owners.

In 2015 he co-founded Harbour Capital, a boutique financial institution that arranges funding for a variety of companies as well as managing its own projects.  Since its inception Harbour Capital has operated in a variety of business sectors ranging from real estate to media.  Most recently, John had found a new passion in Serenity Media; this is what he was working on until his death.

John could spot a good deal from a mile away and always reading, researching and trying to learn and understand. He was always eager for knowledge whether it was business related, his personal interests or philosophy.  John could read and research all day and then feel the need to share the information with everyone whether you were interested or not, he was relentless and most people would eventually just give in and listen.

HOBBIES AND SERVICE

John's love for children was evident. He felt a compelling need to do his part to give children a fighting chance. John sponsored three children to attend Mt Kenya Academy - Brian Kennedy, Peter Ochieng Junior and George Kennedy. In addition to this he also was educating Margaret Kitetu at Egerton University, and little Flavia Simiyu at Green Pastures School in Kibera. John identified needed children and was determined  to give them a foundation for a better life.

Ambulance ride (no one injured)

April 26, 2019

I met John 4 or 5 years ago. When I moved to Nairobi, before I would even call him a friend, he would go literally out of his way to make me feel at home. A few times that I did not have a ride to an event, or back home late at night, he'd drive me. And, if it was him and Moses meeting for a drink after work, I'd always be welcome to join them. I saw these as gestures of loyalty to his friend (Moses), but it also showed me his kindest side from the very beginning. His kindness is one of the things I miss the most these days.

The other is how much fun he could be. I recall when we went upcountry for a funeral, and he offered to take a few of us by chopper. After the ceremony was over, it started to pour heavily and we did not have a ride from the burial site back to the chopper. John managed to arrange a "lift" for us in an ambulance that was there on standby. We are talking about five adults in the back of an ambulance that already carried other 3 people, all of this on a rough road in the middle of a storm. Needless to say, we made it in time :)

Rest in peace John, till we meet again.
