Leave a tributeJohn was what we would say, soft on the inside hard on the outside.
He loved his son so much that’s one thing I knew. His son was His life. He enjoyed going for Sunday lunches at mamba village plus the dawas
Miss you buddy. Forever in my heart!
As his reputation preceded him, I was a little concerned with the thought of the long drive. Armed with my Dutch courage, I jumped in his car with seat coolers which fascinated me; John, Adam, Matthew & I set off in what was to be one of my favourite road trips. The conversation flowed effortlessly and I remember thinking what a nice guy and how everyone has got it so wrong about him. That was the beginning of our friendship that promised never a dull moment when we met.
Rest well John. Missed and loved forever.
Your smile and warm hugs are missed.
To the entire Macharia family, you remain in our thoughts and prayers.
Always,
Nzioka, Audrey & Mwendwa
John joined “Team 23” AKA Team “Wazee” after his first attendance at the Rhino Charge in 2011. He was there with Adam as a spectator, following the team on its track around the course. For anyone who’s been to a Charge event, you will know the thrill of it: the road trip; the overnight stay between stops; the landscape; the scrutineering; plotting the course; essentially the turf for intrepid minds and testosterone-laden men – although there are some ladies teams!
True to form, John immediately decided he wasn’t satisfied with just being a spectator, he wanted “in”, and thus began a long and illustrious “career” as a member of Team 23. There were laughs, fights, and accusations of “Nakumatt Shopping” or references to “General Tommy Franks”. There were heavy-headed, dehydrated sessions, some fights, a lot of running, but mostly a lot of laughs with many stories to be retold.
What few know is that for John it was not just about taking part and hanging with the “Matope” crew; it was deeper and about a commitment to raise money for conservation and his mantra to bequeath a resourceful mother earth for future generations. John was an integral part of the team 23 efforts to raise almost Kes. 50 million over the years. Last year Team 23 raised Kes. 15 million, the highest ever sponsorship raised in the events’ 29-year history. John had already pledged to raising Kes. 5 million for the 2018 Rhino Charge. John’s commitment to supporting conservation was not limited to Rhino Charge. He supported many other environmental initiatives; among others, he contributed generously to fencing the Peponi Road section of Karura Forest.
John it is ironic and yet befitting that we are burying you here - close to the fence you have put so much passion into building and preserving.
John was many things to many people, but to Team 23, John was a core member and a true friend: who else would stand around having a soda and a cigarette while watching his teammates battling to get the car down a cliff, in no hurry to rush to help ;-) Who else would sit for hours, post-route planning, debating the wisdom of King Solomon and reflecting on Emmanuel Kant – his favorite philosopher – for hours after the event; incidentally, the team has never completed the full course since John joined the team, a fact that we reminded John nudge-and-wink every year the event came up. And then, who else could manage to be the centre of ridicule yet all the while laughing at himself, head cocked to side with that smirk and smile, that look which always spoke volumes.
To say that John’s absence on the team will be felt is an understatement. John was an incredible and committed friend, a total non-team player but a friend who never hesitated to lend a hand. Difficult and crazy but passionate and funny, all rolled into one small but powerful, dynamic and enigmatic man. We loved John and embraced him with all his eccentricities and all that special stuff that made him “John”.
While we will be charting the course and competing in the 2018 Rhino Charge event you, John, will be very much charging with us and we are dedicating this year’s run of Team 23 to you.
We will miss you….John, until we meet again, Godspeed.
He lived life and ate it with a SPADE!!! Till we meet again bro!

Ambulance ride (no one injured)
I met John 4 or 5 years ago. When I moved to Nairobi, before I would even call him a friend, he would go literally out of his way to make me feel at home. A few times that I did not have a ride to an event, or back home late at night, he'd drive me. And, if it was him and Moses meeting for a drink after work, I'd always be welcome to join them. I saw these as gestures of loyalty to his friend (Moses), but it also showed me his kindest side from the very beginning. His kindness is one of the things I miss the most these days.
The other is how much fun he could be. I recall when we went upcountry for a funeral, and he offered to take a few of us by chopper. After the ceremony was over, it started to pour heavily and we did not have a ride from the burial site back to the chopper. John managed to arrange a "lift" for us in an ambulance that was there on standby. We are talking about five adults in the back of an ambulance that already carried other 3 people, all of this on a rough road in the middle of a storm. Needless to say, we made it in time :)
Rest in peace John, till we meet again.
