His Life

J.B. Stewart

April 7, 2013

My daddy was born in Rabon, Alabama Sept.9,1934 to Albert & Alla Mae Stewart. He had 2 brothers Marvin & Sonny Stewart and 4 sisters, Mildred aka Sister, Betty, Seville & Eva.
Daddy was married prior to my mom and had 1 daughter Tina Brand Stewart.  My mom had 8 children when daddy married her, that in itself says a great deal about the man that he was. He adopted Dell, Karen & myself a few years into the marriage. He provided love, support & guidance to all of us as well as the grandchildren. I never once heard him call myself or any of my siblings his step children or his adopted children, we belonged to him in his heart and that is the most special place to belong to anyone.
My daddy served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960. He was stationed in Germany from Oct.1, 1958 until March 2,1960 as a member of the 1st Medium Tank Battalion 32d Armor. He shared his barrack with Elvis Presley at a time before Elvis was famous, he often told us stories of Elvis singing for them at night while they went to sleep.
My daddy was an over-the-road Truck Driver for over 50 years and only retired when health issues forced him to do so. The last company that daddy drove for was Genie Trucking out of Pennsylvania. I can remember the company calling my mom one day for a "RUSH" delivery that HAD to be picked up in Miami, Fl. and delivered to New York within a small time frame, the dispatcher explained to my mom that they NEEDED daddy to take this load as they knew he could get it there on time! I was so impressed as daddy was 68 years old at that time and already in poor health. I kept thinking in my mind I KNOW this company has much younger drivers that were much more suitable for such a short turn-a-round, but they chose my daddy!! And of course he accepted and delivered on time!!
I could go on forever about my daddy, he was my hero and there was never a time in my life that I could not go to him and bare my soul, even if I were in the wrong and tell him of any mistake or wrong doings that may have occurred. He may blast me out of the water and sometimes get really upset with me but he always loved me no matter what. I was always a daddy's girl. He was one of my very best friend's and his passing has left a hole in my heart that will never be filled.
Daddy passed away Dec. 6, 2012 at Atmore Community Hospital with me on one side and my sister Martha on the other holding his hands as God took him home to finally rest in peace & comfort. I would like to thank my niece Tammy Gaffney who never left myself nor daddy from Sunday Dec. 2 until Thur. Dec. 6 at the time of his passing. Also my beautiful sons and my daughter-in-law, my Aunt Sister & William, Aunt Betty and my sister Betty who rotated shifts to be there with Tammy & I continously. Also, a special thank to daddy's friend Marion Mcghee who visited daddy almost daily before  before his passing and during his hospitilizations.
