John L. Pickens, whom most people called John L. or Brother Pickens, while his daughter- in- law and grandkids lovingly call him “Pops”. John L. was born September 24,1934 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mr. Willie Pickens & Leanna Thomas- Pickens (Both proceeded in death). John L. confessed Christ at an early age at Shady Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor L.J. Rogers. Brother Pickens served as the Church Superintendent during his membership at Shady Grove. Later John joined Friendship Baptist Church where he served as the Church Van Driver until his health became to fail.    

John L. was a Class of 1952 Graduate of A.H. Parker High school and received his Real Estate and Life Insurance License from Daniel Payne Institution in Birmingham, Alabama.  

In 1954 John L. joined the U. S. Marine Corp and served a 4-year term (Post Korean War) where he was stationed in Parris Island, Beaufort South Caroline.   

On November 20, 1965 John L. married the love of his life Bettie Jean English. To this union four children were raised. John L. Pickens Jr. (Proceeded in death) Jason Pickens, Wayne Poe & Wade Poe (Proceeded in death).

Spending time with family, helping others and serving God was John’s mission in life. From driving the church vans, church Superintendent, working with the Youth Athletic Programs, Math Tutoring, learning family history. John will forever be known for his contagious smile, laughter, and warm caring heart for helping others.     

His memories will forever live on in the lives of all that knew him. John will be cherished by 2 sons: Jason (Alicia) of Detroit, MI. Wayne Poe of Atlanta, Ga, Daughter- In- Law Charletta (Disa) Pickens, 2 granddaughters: Mikala Pickens & Tyeshia Wilson, 3 Great- Grandchildren: Ja’ Kobie, Ja’Mya, Ja’Kala, 1 Great Grand Child  Ka’Mya, 2 sisters: Louis P. Gully & Flora Lee Pickens both of Birmingham Ala. , goddaughter: Je’Quetta Allen, god grandchildren: Nakela M. Allen & Sidney C. Allen, Best Friend: James Fikes,  and a  host of nieces, nephews, cousin’s, and friends.
