John Richard Bohin, 63, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his home surrounded by family, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born November 25, 1960 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late John Bohin & Ethel M. Bohin. Raised in Clinton, Maryland, he was saved at a young age and actively involved at Independent Baptist Church. He played many sports some of which included ice hockey, soccer, and basketball.

John was called to Christian education and attended Tennessee Temple University in 1978. He began teaching in 1983 shortly after marrying Rebecca Crowder Bohin. Upon graduation, he started teaching at Trinity Christian school until moving to Birmingham, AL where he taught at Tabernacle Christian School & Heritage Christian School, formally known as Shades Mountain Christian School. He taught many subjects, but his passion was teaching science and coaching sports.

In 2018, his wife, Rebecca Crowder Bohin passed away. He met Maureen Lynn in 2019 & they later married in June of 2020. He retired from teaching in 2020 and began working as a custodian at Oak Mountain Elementary School.

John truly exemplified 1 Corinthians 10:31 in all areas of his life. He was a hard worker and took great care of his family. He loved them dearly - especially being "Pops" to his grandchildren. He also loved The Washington Capitals and anything Maryland.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by Rebecca Crowder Bohin (wife) and Joseph Michael Bohin (nephew). John is survived by his wife, Maureen Lynn, his children, Laura Butts (Barry), Lindsey Doss (Josh), and Lance Bohin. His brother Michael Bohin (Lori), sister Donna Duehring (Tim), bonus daughter Sara Askew (Michael), bonus son David Lynn (Katrina), 6 grandchildren, and many beloved family members.

A celebration of life service will be held Monday, February 12, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Shades Mountain Community Church located at 2281 Old Tyler Road, Birmingham, AL 35226.

In lieu of flowers Pops requested donations be made to UAB Center for Pediatric Onset Demyelinating Diseases (CPODD). These may be online at www.uab.edu by clicking, "Search Schools, Colleges and Units" and clicking "CPODD Retreat Gifts." I’ll always remember how much fun Mr. Bohin made learning! I bet most of his students from SMCS will remember the tape-ball, trash can, trivia game we played. Most of all, I will remember him as a very understanding educator who motivated his students through kindness and his own zeal for learning.

I was fortunate enough to take Mr. Bohin’s science class. He was always so incredibly kind and funny. He was universally loved by students and faculty alike. Highschool wasn’t always fun, but I always looked forward to seeing Mr. Bohin. You never saw him without a a big smile. He treated each and every one of us with kindness and respect. He will be greatly missed by all. Thank you for everything Mr. Bohin.

I only met John a few times as his daughter Laura is married to my nephew Barry Butts. I can say for sure he loved his children and precious grandchildren and they loved him. I know he is at rest in heaven and his family is lending on THE LORD for peace.
