John R. Hanzlik, 61, of Wisner died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Faith Regional Health Services. Services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wisner with burial and military honors at the Wisner Cemetery. Visitation at the church will be Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, and continue at 9 a.m. Friday. Minnick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. ——— John Robert Hanzlik was born March 12, 1951, at Lynch to John C. and Rose A. (Maly) Hanzlik. He was baptized at Assumption BVM Catholic Church in Lynch and later confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wisner. He attended school in Pilger, St. Michael’s Seminary-Elkhorn and received his GED while in the military. John served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971 during the Vietnam War, where he received a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and an Army Commendation Medal. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Wisner and worked for Risor & Barney Construction for 31 years, helped Vance Rabe and other local contractors, as well as doing masonry construction on his own. On July 7, 1984, John was united in marriage to Sue Breitkreutz at the Wisner Ike’s. He was a member of the Wisner VFW Post 5767. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching football on the television, playing cards and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include wife Sue Hanzlik of Wisner; children Jessi and husband Art Ford of Valley and the child they are expecting, Miranda and husband Mike Coss of North Port, Fla., and sons Pvt. 2nd Class Taylor Coss, stationed at Schoefield Barracks, Hawaii., and Ethan Coss, who will be stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.; mother Rose Hanzlik of Wisner; brothers and sisters, Francis and wife Rilla Hanzlik of Clearwater, Rosalie Eklund of Omaha, Dave and wife Linda Hanzlik of Omaha, Dorothy and husband Doug Glaubius of Wisner, Steve Hanzlik of Madison. Several nieces and nephews also survive him. John was preceded in death by his father John C. Hanzlik, son Joshua Friesz, brother William Hanzlik, brother-in-law George Eklund, a nephew in infancy and grandparents James and Marie Maly and Frank and Rose Hanzlik.
