Lynn, MA – John J. “Jack” Scanlon, age 93 and lifelong Lynn resident, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 18, 2021, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Patricia (Dunn) Scanlon. Born in Lynn in 1928, he was the son of the late Elizabeth (Hyde) and James Scanlon. He attended Lynn Public Schools and graduated from the Old Trade School of Lynn. John was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II. In July of 1957, he married his wife Patricia and together they shared 64 years of marriage. He began his career at General Electric of Lynn and later joined the Lynn Police Department where he worked for 3 years. In 1960, he started working for the Lynn Fire Department and did so until his retirement 30 years later in 1990.He was a proud member of the Lynn Firemen’s Local 739 Union and a member of the Relief Association. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and a Disabled Veteran. Jack was a former member at the Franco American Post in Lynn and at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Div. 10.He enjoyed gardening, dancing and traveling and spent many winters with his wife at their homes in St. Petersburg, FL and St. Augustine, FL. John treasured his friends and family and loved entertaining them in his home.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, Jack is survived by his daughter Joan Lawrence and her husband Timothy of Lynn; his grandsons, John Lawrence of Topsfield, Michael Lawrence and his wife Sarrie of Salisbury and Timothy Lawrence, Jr. and his wife Brittany of Swampscott; his 9 great-grandchildren, Camron, Orion, Alexa, Bailee, Braydon, Noah, Kathryn, Timothy and Makinley, and his many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his granddaughters Elizabeth and Kathleen Lawrence; his sisters, Elinor Carroll, Margaret “Claire” McCulley and Mary DeRoo; his cousin Bill Collins and his wife Ethel “Gus” and many other loving relatives.
Service Information: A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 in St. Mary Church, 8 South Common St., Lynn. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Visiting hours will be on Monday in the SOLIMINE FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt. 129), Lynn from 3-7p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and are required to adhere to the guidelines of the CDC, the State of Massachusetts and the Local Board of Health, which allows up to 50 family and friends in the funeral home at a time and all are required to wear a face covering and practice social distancing.
