John Emory Hanson, lovingly known to many as PJ, went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2016, surrounded by family and close friends. His 78 years were full and fruitful. John was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He leaves behind his wife Sharon, daughter Cindy and son-in-law Jeff, son Johnny, brother Rich, grandchildren Jessica, Walter, Kylie, Matthew, Zach, Taylor and great-granddaughter Lucy.

Born September 12, 1937, in Santa Maria, California. John was the son of the late Bazil Hanson and Velma (Livesay) Hanson. His growing up years were spent in Santa Maria and he graduated from Santa Maria High School. He lived in Santa Maria until 1956, when as a young adult he spent two years traveling with an evangelistic gospel team called God’s Invasion Army. Following that he went to Briercrest Bible College, where he met his wife Sharon MacDougall in 1962. John and Sharon were happily married two years later in 1964, leading to almost 52 years of love for each other.

After graduating from Briercrest John worked on staff at Hume Lake Christian Camps during which time he received a call to serve as a youth pastor at his home church, Grace Baptist in Santa Maria, California. This began his pastoral legacy of over 50 years.

The year of 1965 began with the birth of John and Sharon’s first child, Cindy, and concluded with the opportunity to plant a church in Fairfield, California. In 1966 they officially started Fairfield Baptist Conference Church. During years of growth in the church, the Hanson family also grew with the birth of their son, Johnny. Many years later, the church changed its name to Parkway Community Church, which is getting ready to celebrate its 50 year anniversary later this fall.

Pastor John formally retired in April of 2000 but remained active in the church until his passing. John left a legacy of unconditional love, service, and genuine care for others. Outside of Parkway, he was involved in the community as a member of the Mission Solano Board, Chaplain for the Fairfield Police Department for 10 years, part of the Fairfield Ministerial Association, and a member of the Travis Hospitality House board.

John left a big hole in the lives of so many people he touched during his 78 years here on earth, and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 23rd at 1:00 pm at Liberty Church, 2641 N. Texas Street, Fairfield, CA. In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts be given to Parkway Community Church to be used for Hume Lake Camp Scholarships. Checks may be written to Parkway Community Church, with the memo “PCC HUME LAKE” in honor of John Hanson.

Sharon, I believe we met at the 50th class reunion of the 1957 class held in Santa Maria.
John & I grew up together in the Grace Baptist Church and we were kind of smittened with each other when I was a freshman & he a junior.
Shortly after I began dating my late husband Tom of 53 years when he passed in 2013.
My heart goes out to you and your family, but especially you Sharon. I know you must be experierncing the pain & loss that I've been feeling for 2 1/2 years. I find the hardest at bedtime when he isn't there to say Goodnight & I love You & get a hug. I take comfort in knowing we will be reunited someday, but it doesn't seem to lessen the lonliness. God gives me strength on a daily basis, but I can't stay up 24 hrs. a day.
Hume Lake was a special place for our highschool youth group. I would like to donate on behalf of John but I would also like to honor Lynn Karo.I don't know if you had the privilege of knowing Lynn, but he too loved Hume, and I believe he passed away up there. He too became a pastor after receiving Christ at Grace Baptist in his high school days.
I believe he ministered at Hume prior to his passing. I have the book he wrote called "Adventure in Dying", loaned it out, & not sure I got it back. His wife Nancy completed the final chapter. Forgive me if you already know these things since he & John were such good friends. Lynn has been gone for so many years.
There isn't an address on this memorial for Parkway Community Church, so I'm not sure where to mail it. I've given my e-mail address above so perhaps someone can send it to me.
May God fill you with Joy, at this difficult time in your life, and Peace to get you the sleep you need to be there for your family. God Bless You, Jeanie Lapp (Baker)

I'm sitting here praying and typing my thoughts for John's Memoral book as many are joining together to remember john. John Emory was my favorite cousin when we were growing up I have wonderful memories during of John.. John and I had a way of disappearing when it was time to go home. We got in a lot of trouble; nothing major. He was so much fun and I love him dearly. John's life was an example of God's love and mercy. I look forward to seeing him again.

Pastor John was a real encouragement to us both in ministry. He teamed up with my husband Ray in leading a small group there at Parkway. It was such a blessing to have him there for us. He prayed for us and encouraged us along the way. Sharon was also a real prayer warrior for us and an encourager. Our time at Parkway is what God used to propel us into full-time ministry and we will always be grateful for that.

I would like to give my condolences to Pastor John's family. I know you are missing his presence here on earth but he isn't gone; he just moved to heaven. I was just 7 years old when I lived on Tyler st. In Fairfield, CA. Just down the street from Pastor John and his family. It was July of 1966. My mama sent me and 2 of my siblings to Vacation Bible School at Pastor John's house. I was given a small black King James New Testament Bible. I still have that Bible. I printed my name on the line after saying a prayer to ask Jesus into my heart. Pastor John and Sharon planted the first seeds of faith in my little life. My mama wasn't a Christian and so she didn't continue watering those seeds. When I was 18 years old, on May 19, 1977, my younger brother Jimmy accepted Jesus into his life. He shared the way of salvation with me and I didn't hesitate to pray a prayer of repentance and asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life also. In 1979 my brother Jimmy died of a self inflicted gun shot. He was playing around with a gun and began pulling the trigger as to dare to end his life. He lost the dare. I asked Pastor John to speak at Jimmy's funeral and he did. Pastor John told me that Jimmy had actually been to see him a few times not long before Jimmy's death. I remember how lovingly Pastor John spoke of my brother and how beautifully Sandy Bales sang 2 songs without music at the graveside funeral. I thank God for Pastor John and Sharon for graciously opening their home to children like I was and telling us about God's love. God bless you Sharon. <3

John and I spent the year 1958 together in God's Invasion Army. He was a great friend. We traveled back to California together that December. My thoughts and prayers are with you in John's passing. He certainly was a servant of the Lord. I am sorry that we never got together although living just hours away.
