Obituary

José Manuel Cordero, MD of West Liberty, KY, died Thursday, September 29, 2016 in the Morgan County Appalachian Regional Hospital, West Liberty, KY at the age of 91 years. He was born on Saturday, March 28, 1925 in Lebrija, Colombia, a son of the late Angel Maria and Ana Firma Pinzon Cordero. 

He was a graduate of Walla Walla University in Washington and received his degree in medicine from the Universidad Autonoma De Nuevo Leon in Mexico.  He practiced medicine in Peoria, Illinois and later as a radiologist at Morgan County Appalachian Hospital and McDowell ARH Hospital in Kentucky until his retirement in 2003. 

 Dr. Cordero was a life-time member of the Kentucky Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was a member of The Seventh Day Adventist Church.  He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, especially topics relating to science and history, and was always ready to enjoy a good game of golf with his golfing buddies. He remained proud of his Colombian heritage.  He was passionate about his work and helping others.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister Rosa Prada. 

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Cordero, West Liberty, KY and their two daughters, Amber Cordero, Los Angeles, CA, Esperanza Cordero Pacejka (Andrew Joseph) of Salt Lake City, Utah; his former wife, Shirley Ellzey (née Hipditch) and their daughter Jeannine Cordero (David Kolin) of Chicago, IL; two grandchildren, Katharine Kolin and Yale Kolin of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Angela Britton of Los Angeles, CA and Carlina Molina of Colombia, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held on October 1, 2016 in the West Liberty Memorial Gardens and at the Potter Funeral Home.
