During his childhood in The
Bronx, Joe’s father showed compassion to those in need. Likewise, Joe had always had a desire to make
a difference in the community. His first
volunteer opportunity came when living in Northern Virginia. Joe volunteered with a church ministry food
cupboard and a crisis hot-line.
Joseph founded "A Friend's Christmas" at Lockheed Martin in 1987 which continues to serve people today. Here are his own words from his bio published shortly after his retirement for his acceptance of an award. He continued to volunteer his time into his retirement years for as long as he was able.
"In 1986, a co-worker in Joe’s
employee group in Valley Forge selected children’s names from an Angel Tree in
K-Mart as an alternative to a mutual gift-exchange at Christmas. The positive response was so great that the
following year Joe and his co-worker began “A Friend’s Christmas”, a larger
version of the original idea. In the
first year of “A Friend’s Christmas” 22 families from Montgomery and Chester
Counties were “adopted” and cash donations were received for a domestic
violence shelter in West Chester. The
project was a success with Joe as its “Champion” and it has grown yearly to now
serve over 100-120 families, 400 children, and 120 seniors annually.
“A Friend’s Christmas” now
reaches out to social service agencies, organizations and church ministries in
the five counties surrounding Philadelphia. This vast effort would not be possible without the many people who
generously dedicate their time and resources during the holidays with the
support of their families."
Around the same time, Joseph was a founding member of the Faith L.O.V.E. Project at Faith Church of Worcester. L.O.V.E. stood for Living Our Vision Effectively and served many of the same families who received gifts through "A Friend's Christmas", however it enabled a group from the church, including his children and their friends, to perform outreach programs year round, including conducting Vacation Bible School, refurbishing a community center, playground, and providing meaningful work for individuals enhancing their community.
When Joe was no longer able to contribute because of his physical limitations, he enjoyed giving to charitable causes that were closest to his heart.
Here is an article from 2000 about Lockheed Martin and the way the company enabled employees to give in many ways, including Friend's Christmas:
