Peacefully on May 4, 2019, our father Joseph James Howell Hightower, transcended to his creator. Through a narrow pathway with room for only one, which leads to a door opening into a wonderful realm of light. His heavenly father was there and as he crossed the threshold, he gathered him close to his breath and all his troubles ceased.
Joe’s journey started March 7, 1937 in Eutaw, South Carolina when he was born the first son of the late James Howell and Annie Lee Jenkins and the step son of Robert Hightower. At a very young age Joe accepted Christ. He was a member of Hickory Hill Baptist Church In Pineville, SC. He was educated in Eadytown South Carolina public schools then continued his education in the Reading, P.Aschool system.
In 1955 Joseph enlisted in the US Marines and received a honorable discharge for his services. Joseph was well known to everyone as Joe, Bootsie, or Hightower.
Our father love to talk and reminisce about when he was a child. He would talk for hours to any and everyone who would listen. It didn't matter who you were. You know the saying "it takes a village to raise a child." Well it is indeed very true. Joe was raised by his grandparents, Aunts, and uncle. He grew up with just about all his cousins. One of Dads fondest memories is of him helping his grandfather Charlie Jenkins work in the field. And from that he learned to farm.
Joe was a very talented gospel singer. He sang lead with many groups throughout his lifetime but some of the most memorable ones are The Silver Stars from Baltimore, Md. with his cousins Billy and Teddy, whom preceded him in death; along with The Silver Tones of Annapolis Md. and The Southern Six from Cross, SC.
Hightower was preceded in death by his three sisters Julie, Annie Ruth, and Barbara.
He leaves to carry on his legacy six daughters, Beatrice, Terry, DeeDee, Kai, Carla, and Nikia; four sons Lee, John, Shawn, and Brian; two daughter-in-laws Leeta and Brenda; two son-in-laws Douglas and Dontae; and his favorite nephew Eric; three special young ladies that he helped raise Melissa, Tiffanee, and Tina; a very special friend Mary Louise; one sister Robin Tina; two brothers Alex, and Jacob; one sister-in-law Khadijah; twenty-nine grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
One thing for certain, two things for sure; Dad might not have seen or talk to some of us as much as he would have liked but our father loved each and everyone of his children and grands without a doubt. No matter what.
