Mi Ahijado (Godson)

December 21, 2011

My Oldest Godson, Juan Carlos

I will never forget how I felt when they told me what they were going to name the new baby. Little Sherry (my namesake) came roaring into the world in July 1994. Her mother and I both cried when we saw her. She was so beautiful and perfect. As with most Mexican men, her father, Juan Carlos waited outside the delivery room for news of her arrival. I can still see him as he saw Sherry that first time that day. He took her from me as if he might somehow crush her by holding her. I was an intruder on this first precious moment between daddy and daddy's girl! His smile was so broad and happy with genuine tears of happiness steadily streaming down. He loved her so much. I made him promise to always be a good daddy and remember how he felt right at that moment. He kept his promise to love them all and to take care of them.  But how could we know that in only 4 short years or so.....He would be gone? Sherry's daddy, my oldest Godson, was needlessly kidnapped, tortured, murdered, then tossed onto the side of the road in 1998. His death has never been solved. We have missed him so much over the years but we never forget. This year, Little Sherry, had her first child, a son. I will never forget how I felt when they told me what they were going to name him......Juan Carlos!   RIP Juan Carlos - We Miss and Love You Always!
