Juan Mora Powers, age 81, of Leisuretowne, NJ, passed away peacefully into God’s arms on Friday, May 7th, 2021 at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mt. Holly, NJ with his loving family present.

Juan was born on June 25, 1939 in Pecos, Texas.  He was the younger son of the late William Powers and Trinidad Mora Powers Fierro. He attended school in Kent, TX before his family moved to Selma, CA where he attended Selma High School.  Juan enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1956 and later earned his High School Equivalency Diploma in 1971.  He also studied at Burlington County College.  He served distinguishably overseas, including the Vietnam War, and retired honorably as a Technical Sergeant after 22 years in 1978.  He was a member of the American Legion (Eden-Stanley Post #294).  Juan met his wife, Maria Luisa Barrado, in 1963 while stationed at the Torrejon Air Force  Base in Spain and they married 8 months later.  In the earlier years of their marriage, they resided at various air force bases until finally settling in Willingboro, NJ after his air force retirement to raise their family.

Following his service to his country, Juan worked at Inductotherm Corporation before securing a position as a Manual Clerk at the United States Postal Service, which led to a 21-year career.  After retiring from the Postal Service, Juan and Maria Luisa seized opportunities to travel and lived in Rota, Spain for a few years before settling at The Villages in Florida where they resided for about 10 years.  As his wife’s health began to decline, they moved back to New Jersey to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Juan enjoyed many competitive games and sports like chess, billiards, darts, poker, bowling, and golf. When not working, Juan was found either bowling or golfing, and for a few years power walking as a Senior Olympic Athlete.   His family, friends, and former coworkers will forever remember his fondness for golf and willingness to take the time to impart his knowledge of the game to anyone who was interested in learning.  Juan’s kindness and positive attitude were infectious for those who got to know him.  He lived life to the fullest and never complained.  He was a big believer in the power of positive thinking which guided him from humble beginnings to living the American Dream.  His greatest devotion was his love to his wife and family.  Despite many sacrifices, he endured to live a fruitful and inspiring life embedded in his Catholic faith to God and Jesus Christ.  He donated to various charities such as Saint Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Wounded Warrior Project, and St. Joseph’s Indian School.

Juan is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Maria Luisa Powers of Leisuretowne, NJ along with his four children and their spouses, Juan Powers of Williamstown, NJ, Nancy and John Prindiville of Wall, NJ, Fernando Powers of Williamstown, NJ, and Jesus and Kathy Powers of Jackson, NJ; his eight adored grandchildren, Krystal, Kamara, Johnny, Brittany, Brendan, Connor, Sophia, and Noelle; five great-grandchildren, Aira, Phillip, Selena, Tristan, and Alfonso; five siblings, Jerome Powers, Ted Powers, Maria Fierro, Elizabeth Fierro, and Nick Fierro, and many caring distant nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Juan was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, William “Bill” Powers, sister, Carmen Fierro, and brother Felix Fierro.
