She has always been a giving, loving, and caring human being.  She has a way of eliciting the better angel of our nature.

I knew Juanita (koz!) online since 1999. We were in the quiltswappers online quilting group together. We met in real life in St Louis, and in Houston, with others of our" gang". I came to Facebook today to check on her in these times, and was so sad to read of her passing. She was a dear lady. I was so honoured to have known her. I have several little gifts, and a booklet with many of her poems she wrote for us. We called her our poet laureate. My sympathies to all her family. Know she was loved by many others.

I was fortunate enough to become lifelong friends with Steven Kozikowski when we were both in about third grade. I have so many fond memories of hanging out at the Kozikowski household. Juanita was always so kind and caring to me. I remember when she and my mom were “Den Moms” for our Cub Scout Troop. We had so much fun. I just wanted to offer my love and condolences to the Kozikowski Family and share my memory of Juanita as a such a kind, compassionate, and friendly person. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time. God Bless.

I have known the Kozikowski family my whole life. Growing up, the Kozikowskis lived about five houses away in Greenbriar. Jaunita was my guardian angel on TWO separate occasions. Once when I was struck by a vehicle on their street while riding my bike. She was first to the scene to help me. And then she was the first one to help me the day I came home from school and discovered my mother had died. Two very traumatic events and Juanita was a critical part of them both. An amazing human being who led a very full life and raised some amazing children. I hope to see you all on Saturday.

Boop Boop Dit-Tem Dat-Tem What-Em Chu. This brings back fond memories to me. When Norma posed that phrase, it brought me to mind a time at our uncle James home in Bourbon. The families were there and Juanita, Carolyn, and Norma were behind a curtain and they were performing "The Three Little Fishes. I was in awe and they let me do either the hands or feet and I just had the best time. Of course anytime we all got together was a good time. The times when we had our family reunions in Meremec State Park on Grandma & Grandpa Edwards' wedding anniversary. Fond memories. RIP Juanita.

I have many fond memories of Juanita but would like to share comments about one of our favorite activities in the early 1950’s. We liked to go roller skating. Neither one of us had a car so we took the streetcar to St. Louis then a bus to the roller rink. We had a small rink in Granite City but were always excited to make the trip to St. Louis. usually on a Sunday afternoon. Those were fun times! May your memories comfort you.

Rest in peace cousin Juanita. I think we only got to meet in person one time (if I recall correctly) when I was pretty young but I've enjoyed our interactions on Facebook and will miss seeing your posts. Mom always spoke of you with love and shared happy memories about when you were both young so I know she'll be glad to see you again, as will all the family there with you. My condolences to your family and friends that had to say "see you later". God bless. Enjoy the sunshine.

Love, Patti (Minnie Lloyd's daughter) xoxo

Her Life

Early life

February 19, 2020
Juanita was born on November 6, 1929 in St. Louis Missouri to Blanche and Lloyd Parsons Edwards. She was the oldest of three children: sisters Carolyn (Edwards Sykes) and Norma (Edwards Richter).  Growing up in Granite City Illinois, she had a perfect attendance record for all four years of high school, marking the beginnings of a lifetime of exceptional achievements and rewards in every activity she participated in.

Family life

February 19, 2020
Juanita met Richard Kozikowski in June of 1956 in Granite City Illinois while she was working at the Army Depot and he was stationed there.  They were married August 29, 1959, which began an intensely loving marriage that lasted over 60 years.  First son David arrived in 1960.  Daughter Lisa arrived in 1963.  Middle son Joel arrived in 1966, and youngest son Steven arrived in 1972.

Over the years, the family grew to add four additional children-in-laws and seven grandchildren.

Government career

February 19, 2020
Within a year of high school graduation, she took an entry level position in the Army Depot in Granite City. She advanced her career to the position of "Budget Analyst" before leaving the workforce to raise a family. Nearly 20 years later, after her youngest child Steven was old enough, she returned to government work at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana. She ended her government career as the Chief Financial Officer of the army hospital at Ft. Ben. During her second "tour of duty", she won the "Outstanding Government Employee" award and was presented a check for $1,000 by Indiana Senator Richard Lugar.

Mom touched everyone

February 19, 2020
Last year, my sister Lisa needed to have a tree removed in front of her house.  Knowing my parents had just had the same work done at their home a few months earlier, my sister got the name of the tree service they used and gave them a call.  While talking on the phone, my sister mentioned she received a referral from my dad Richard Kozikowski.  The tree serviceman's response:

Wait... was that sweet lady your mom?   She was so pleased with my work that when she thanked me, she touched my face and I gotta tell you, I almost cried.  I have never felt so validated before in my entire life. She is such a sweet sweet lady
This story goes to demonstrate how special my Mom could make others feel.

Her Stuff

February 22, 2020
Mom K amassed a lot of Stuff.  Our family teased her about this.  Over the years I’ve thought about her presumed attachment to things.  Instead, I think she appreciated stuff for its ability to evoke old and create new memories.  I think she was attached to the LINK these items provided to her cherished past and the CONNECTION they created with people in the present.  She wanted to hold on to what was important about the past, present, and future.  “A day is never over if a memory is made.”  Indeed.

The family welcomes Steven to the world (sort of)

The Koz kids are helping Pop clean out some of Mom's old things. We came across this gem in a stack of papers. It is a letter my sister Lisa wrote to my mother while she was still in the hospital with Steven following his birth in 1972.  Today was the first anyone other than those two have seen this:

Dear Mom

I love you very much.  Much more than David and Joel. I wanted a girl, didn't you? But you had a boy.  Boys are brats. Now we have three brats.  I wish you had a girl so there would be two boys and two girls. Now I am the only girl. I will love him. I hope you come back soon with him. I want to see him.  Now I have three brothers. Do you know when you are coming back?  Did you want a girl?

Love Lisa
