December 19, 2012

In the Beginning

On October 3, 1947, Judith was born to the late William Lawrence Stubbs, Sr. and Earle Azalia Smith Stubbs.  Judy was the eldest of five children: Lawrence William Stubbs, Edward Ernest Stubbs, Walter Alexander Stubbs, and a sister, Elizabeth.

- Milestones -

Judy is a graduate of Ridley High School. She received a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Cheyney State Teacher’s College in 1969.  She pursued her career in education with the Interboro School District and worked at Glenolden School for 36 years.

An Educator’s Legacy

While at Glenolden School, Judy taught all subjects, including science, math, social studies and language arts.  On average, she taught approximately 70 students, daily, until the school departmentalized.  It was then that Judy’s specialty became Language Arts. She created a Language Arts writing system using a writing system that she designed,  “T-Charts”. The system is still in use today. Several former students continued using the T-Charts system to enhance their writing skills.  Judy always found novel ways to help her students learn and retain what she taught them. One method was an original song entitled “The L.A. Rap” (Language Arts Rap). Her students won various awards for writing contests and her classes excelled in the State Assessments.   Judy’s impact on her students is far-reaching. Students whom she taught 20, 30, 40 years ago still remember her as a “favorite teacher”, and they’ve shared with us how she touched, even changed their lives.

Her Family

On August 9, 1980, Judy married her husband, James Taylor. Their “new family” then included their one daughter, Serena Cara Robinson, from a prior marriage,  Judy and Jimmy took great pride in their daughter’s accomplishments as she graduated from Penn State University and became an attorney.  Judy and Jimmy enjoyed family gatherings, entertaining, travelling. In August 2006, they were blessed with their granddaughter Leanna-Kayla Abeni’ MacBello. Leanna brought so much laughter and joy to Judy. Judy’s face beamed with happiness whenever Leanna was nearby.

Judy loved her family…immediate and extended…She enjoyed participating in Smith Family Reunion planning meetings and just laughing and spending quality time with family. Judy always encouraged our young generation to continue to carry the family values of maintaining close bonds that transcend time.  She also loved watching dancing shows; decorating, watching HGTV and sharing ideas with her Sister-In-Law, Alice. Judy always complimented her Sister-In-Law, Virginia, regarding her photography skills. Judy loved her nieces and nephews and cousins. She had very special relationship with her cousin Racheal Holliday; her “sister” Virginia Grundy; and her cousin Lorraine Smith. “I love Lorraine; we go way back,” Judy said of her cousin, whom she affectionately referred to as,“Tweety Bird” for her beautiful soprano voice.  Judy loved words games and enjoyed playing Words With Friends and Scramble word games on Facebook. Cousin Valerie and her niece Tiffany can attest to how serious she was about words. Judy, Jim and Serena would often spend Sunday afternoons at her brother and sister-in-law, Al and Lucille’s, home to reminisce, talk and laugh.  Judy and her brother Al would always watch Politics Nation and share notes about Al Sharpton and his comments after the show. Judy said, on many occasions, “I love my brothers”.   Indeed, her relationship with each family member was unique, meaningful…she will be missed but she will never be forgotten.

Judy and her daughter Serena shared a very close bond. As an only child, Judy was Serena’s confidant; her compass; her inspiration; a true friend….they share a connection beyond words. . Serena helped her Dad care for her mother during her illness, cancelling all hearings to ensure that Judy had everything she needed. Judy never wanted anyone to worry about her;no matter the challenge she never complained.

Her Faith

The late Charles H. Gover baptized Judy at First Baptist Church at a young age.  Her parents, William and Azalia Stubbs, were deacons and deaconesses at the church.  As such, they raised their children in the way they should go…their children never departed from that upbringing.  Throughout Judy’s illness she never complained because she did not want anyone to worry about her.  Her faith never waivered. She always held onto scriptures and Psalm 91 brought her great comfort.  She said, “If anyone asks about me, please tell them I said,” Through it all…through it all, I’ve learned to trust in Jesus; I’ve learned to depend upon His Word.”

Her Church

Continuing her love of education, Judy was an active member of the John Mack Freeman Scholarship Committee at First Baptist Church.  She was the keynote speaker at the award ceremony on June 17, 2012.  She created memorial booklets that embodied her passion for children. She said “The Children Are Our Future. Teach them to appreciate the beauty and wonder of God’s Creative Power…We must invest in them; inspire, teach, nurture, reward, instruct, challenge, protect, correct, encourage them…We must encourage them to dream.”

Judy also loved to create a welcoming atmosphere by decorating the lower sanctuary of the church with colorful table cloths, flower filled vases, banners and bulletin boards.

Entrepreneur / Visionary

Judy is the founder of Taylor-Made Occasions, a wedding and event planning business.  Before officially launching her business, she coordinated numerous memorable family weddings. After retiring from teaching, she became a Certified Wedding Specialist with Wedding Beautiful Worldwide.  She coordinated the marriage of New Jersey Pastor Darrell Armstrong, a wedding with over 400 guests.  In addition, she also planned the flawless swearing in ceremony of New Jersey Superior Court Judge, M. Christine Allen-Jackson. The Taylor-Made Occasions team is an assembly of family members with specific skills, talents and attention to details.  The team intends to carry on Judy’s vision of creating lasting memories to keep Judy’s vision, and her memory alive.

Her Voice

Judy had a beautiful alto voice. She harmonized beautifully with the sopranos and tenors on the Voice of First Baptist Church choir.  She loved the Voices; she loved to sing His praises and was grateful for each new day.

Her Strength

Judy’s strength came from her love of Jesus Christ as her personal friend; and from reading the Scriptures.  She also had the love and support of her husband an daughter and a magnitude of support from her immediate family.  The love of her life, her granddaughter Leanna, even at a very young age, knew how to get her “Mimi” on her side.

Her Survivors

Judy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Lawrence; her sister Elizabeth; brother-in-law Walter Taylor, leaves to forever cherish her memorie, her husband of over 32 years, James Taylor; her only daughter, Serena MacBello, Esquire; granddaughter Leanna MacBello; 2 brothers, Edward E.Stubbs, Sr., sister-in-law Cheryl Stubbs; Brother Walter A. Stubbs and sister-in-law, Lucille. 3 sisters-in-law, Alice M. Smith, Virginia L. Burton, Betty Jackson; Brother’s in Laws, Bryan Jackson; brothers in laws: Hayes Johnson and Sam Johnson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and a vast multitude of friends.

We love you, so much, but God loves you more. He only takes the best.
