I love and miss you cousin! I'll never forget our beach trips when I was little. You and Kelly were the best babysitters! You have always been and always will be a part of our family. Give Aunt Kathie a hug for me!

Rolling on the river

November 3, 2010

Some of my favorite Justin memories are from a Thanksgiving weekend he spent with my friends and I on the Colorado River just below Hoover Dam.  We loaded our camping gear, food, and supplies into canoes and kayaks and paddled the Colorado River from just below the dam to a popular campsite location called "Arizona Hot Springs."

All the paddle camping “newbies” were under strict instructions to keep their clothing to a minimum – one pair of long pants, a pair of shorts, a swimsuit, a shirt, a jacket, a pair of tennies and a pair of sandals.  What was requested of him, and what he actually brought were two entirely different things, but no one realized it until we got to our destination.   When we unloaded our boats at the campsite, we kept finding extra dry bags in my canoe and in other people’s boats that they didn’t recognize.  Slowly but surely, these mystery bags began to pile up on the beach.  Then I looked inside one. Yep.  All Justin’s crap.  He brought jeans (more than one pair I think!), 2 different pairs of tennis shoes, water shoes, flip flops, sweat pants, 2 pairs of shorts, board shorts, 2 t-shirts, a long sleeve t-shirt, a sweatshirt, a sweater, and for all I know there was a sweater vest in there too!   I asked him what the heck he brought all that for, and he said he didn’t know what he’d feel like wearing.  We were only camping for 2 nights!!!

When camping on the river, we utilize the cold water to chill our sodas, waters and all-important camping beers; once we make camp, we collect all the drinks in a big mesh bag and tie it to a long rope.  The bag goes into the river, and the other end of the rope is tied to a large rock.  As the river level often fluctuates, we make sure to check it frequently to see that our bag doesn’t float away (which would be tragic!).  Well that night, as the sun set, the beers and the campfire stories started flowing and we suddenly realized that we hadn't checked the "river fridge" in a while.  Justin, Melanie and I ran to discover that the river had risen dramatically - and we were afraid all was lost.  We couldn’t' see the bag, we couldn't even see the rock the "dry" end of the rope was attached to!

Upon realizing this, Justin pulled off his shoes, shirt, and sweatpants (one of his several pairs of shorts underneath) and without hesitation he waded through knee deep water over to where the dry end of the rope would  have been tied to the rock and found it just beneath the surface.  Then he followed it out into waist deep water (53 degree water, mind you!) took a deep breath (not to go under, but to withstand the frigid water) and came up with our fridge bag!  Victory!  He was grinning ear to ear, and shivering uncontrollably!   A quick hike up to the hot springs was needed to bring his body temp back up to normal.

We're heading back to that spot this Thanksgiving weekend, and having a toast to our friend, our paddling buddy, and our beer rescuer.  :) We'll miss you on the river JJ!
