SPC Clay enlisted in the United States Army September 25, 2007. He attended Basic Combat Training at Ft. Jackson, SC, and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Sill, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, as a 13B Cannon Crew Member. Upon graduation, he was stationed with A Battery, 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment at Ft. Carson, CO. While assigned to A Battery, SPC Clay was selected based on his outstanding performance as Cannoneer Number One Man and as a Paladin Howitzer driver. SPC Clay deployed to Iraq from 5 Sept. 2008 to 15 Aug.2009 where he operated out of CSC Scania in the Babel Province. While deployed he was attached to Headquarters Battery with the Personal Security Detachment for the 3-16 FA Battalion Commander. 
He also was awarded the Driver Mechanics Badge tracked and Driver Mechanics Badge Wheeled.
