Big Heart

Sweetie made friends with everyone. In New Jersey gas stations are required full-service and Sweetie usually had a conversation with the attendant if they weren't busy.  For many years the same man normally pumped our gas, a Sikh who worked here for 10 years, away from his family in India, in order to put his kids through college. He lived in a small trailer, walking distance from the station.  Sweetie knew not only his name but also his kids', one who was in med school and the other in law school. On his last day of work before he returned to his family, Sweetie gave him a card with best wishes and blessings, a picture of our family, and a material cash gift to recognize his decade-long sacrifice for his family. With Sweetie, there were no strangers.

From a Friend

I was thinking about when I first met Karen, her and Sara and probably David came to visit you in Carlsbad one Summer, Hot, Hot, Day Sara was itty bitty.  We talked about all kinds of stuff and how she had just visitied a Museum in Ohio I think with all the Body explained and parts laid out all over, she loved it. Tammy was out of town, taking care of her Mom, and Karen made us dinner and that awesome Corn Salsa all from scratch, way yummy still a family favorite of ours.
Tammy remembered when they all came down another time Jeff and everybody and we BBQ'd and she made that ice cream sandwich cake the same one I tried to copy that time I put it in the Freezer that had all the Sushi and it came out tasting like fish--yuk!. I remember talking to her after the Drive-in and feeling so comfortable and content, like it was how it was to be. I reflect now knowing how awesome it is that you all are in my life and how cool you all are, she was so thankful just for us going to the Drive-In and having a BBQ. . I remember the grief she gave us when we got stuck hunting Oryx
I hate that you all are going through this and I know we all will get to deal with horrible losses in our life at one time or another and now is a horrible time for you all.  Living without her is going to hurt, but you have lots of memories so she can never be gone.  The memories will hit you at different times when you need her, she will come to mind, some sight, some sound, some smell, some thought....she will be there. I am grateful that I got to know her a little and that I get to keep some very, very fond memories of Karen and all of you.

One of her Faves

Karen loved to embarrass me with this one whenever she had the chance.

There were several ponds near the farmhouse that I used to visit/fish on a regular basis as a kid.  One late evening as it neared dark I was walking back to the house down our dirt road.  Karen and Dad had been hiding in the woods near our driveway with a bunch of leaves piled on top of them, for who knows how long.  As I walked by, quite innocently and under no duress, they suddenly came out of the pile of leaves making a horrible growling/monster sound.  I made quite the Olympic showing in my sprint back to the house.
