My mentor

In the Summer of 2006, I began a DNP program at Case Western Reserve. My first class began in Social Policy where I met Karen. She was filled with enthusiasm, stories and great ideas. I was enthralled. Tragedy hit me on my last day of class when I was notified by familyto return home immediately because my husband was stung by a bee and in anaphylactic shock on life support. Karen kept in touch even after the death of my husband. She gently encouraged me to push forward and kindly gave me 6 months to get that first paper in. I even developed a House Bill to promote taking BP in high risk children. I went on to finish the program and receive my DNP in 2009. To my surprise on the day of graduation, I was awarded the Dean’s Legacy Award learning that Karen nominated me for my determination. I will never forget this extraordinary woman who holds a place in my heart. The world and academia has lost a special person. RIP my friend. Kim Ballone ❤️
