One of Katie’s Practical Jokes

August 9, 2020
Katie loved to sing...there was a home  recording from when she was a little girl where she introduces herself and says with her Indiana accent: “ Hi my name is Kay and I lack to sing”...
Back to my story:
She was a newcomer to The Riverside Folk Song Society so not many members knew her, and the group had been invited to have their meeting  at Jerry & Bev Praver’s home.   So Katie and her new friend Carol Garro got together and decided to sing “De Colores” and “Tres Heridas”.  They came up with the idea that Carol would introduce Katie as her cousin from South America and tell everyone that Katie didn’t speak any English.  Since she was fairly fluent in Spanish there were some interesting conversations flowing about her before the program began that were often quite amusing.
When They performed their two songs everyone was enthralled with their performance, their voices blended wonderfully and their Spanish accents lent an exotic flavor to their performance.  Well at break time a small crowd of admirers  gathered around her and in broken Spanish tried to communicate with her, asking where she was from, complimenting their performance etc. She shyly replied to their attempts with the graciousness one would expect from a well educated young woman from South America.  When the group settled down for the second half of the evening, Carol and Katie were asked to perform another song... When it came time to introduce the song, Katie proceeded to explain the story behind their choice in flawless English ( with a slight Indiana twang).  As members of the group began to catch on,they realized  that they’d been had by those two.... snickers and then laughter rolled through the audience.  Carol and Katie then performed their lastsong in English to the delight of all....

Lin's Birthday Present from Katie

January 17, 2022
When Katie was about 5 years old  and her older sister Lin's birthday came around; she went to Elvin's Service Station on the corner and bought her favorite Candy Bar (a Clark bar)as a present for Lin.  As the day wore on and she carried around that candy bar, glancing more and more longlingly at it, she finally resolved that she had to give it to Linnie.  She just could not keep it for herself-no matter how much she wanted it.  That evening after dinner she proudly gave her sister that precious Birthday Present.  When Lin unwrapped it- there it was..... a very carefully measured .....
1/2 of a Clark Bar.

Katie's Pioneering roots...

August 5, 2019
Katie's loved books and one of her favorites when she was a little girl was "The Bears of Blue River".  She loved stories about adventure, exploring & pioneering in the "Longhunter" Territories of Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.  And well she should....Her ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, The Civil War.  The blood of  Daniel Boone and John Adams flowed in her veins.  This is a picture of The original Homestead Log Cabin built by her ancestors when they came to "Bear Branch" a new settlement in the Breaks of the Ohio in Southern Indiana......

Some great  ”Katieisims”....life was never boring when she was on the job...

Katie would sometimes overhear total strangers mention they were from Southern Indiana where she grew up; or in the course of (for instance) talking to our family doctor-also from Indiana-she would ask “So, when did you first find out that bell peppers were not mangoes?

It seems that it was quite common when Katie was growing up (and in  fact, still was in use occasionally the last time I checked) for supermarkets-like Safeway-to advertise say....“Mangoes, three for a dollar”. And show a picture of.....wait for it...........BELL PEPPERS!  How this could have ever happened? I have no idea, but when she moved to California AFTER college she went to the local supermarket to buy some “Mangoes “...  seeing some bell peppers-obviously mislabeled- on display in the vegetable section,  Katie scathingly said to the clerk “These aren’t Bell Peppers they’re Mangoes!”  Uh....needless to say, everyone within hearing cracked up....

Growing up in Southern Indiana, there were a number of things Katie would not experience until she adventured forth into the world.  For example, she had never heard of pizza before she went to college.....or tacos, or eaten Chinese food (uh, guess where I took her on our first (almost-a-disaster)  date...LA’s Chinatown!).

Katie wanted to see that big world out there.  Her sister Lin had moved to California, but their mother was worried that Katie would be “corrupted “ if she joined her sister in West Covina.  In order to entice Katie to remain  in Indiana, her parents bought her a new powder blue and white Chevrolet convertible if she would agree to getting a teaching job there for the coming year.  So... she did. And at the end of that year she drove that convertible to California and joined her sister in West Covina

Katie Birthday Story (turning 30)

August 5, 2018

The Sun never sets in the Far North in the Summertime....As I started the campfire to make  Breakfast; mist was lifting off of the Lynn Canal at the north end of the Inside Passage where we were camped. A small pod of Killer Whales blew spume as they roiled the glassy surface.   Marty, Terry and one of my students, Dave O'Dell sat with me out side the tent and we worriedly discussed what to do... It was Katie's birthday, she was turning 30! She'd been chewing on the ramifications of this milestone for days-and had made it VERY plain that she did NOT want to be reminded of this terrible earthshaking event-why, she was (almost) going to be "Over the Hill"!

We had planned among ourselves to make it truly memorable somehow out here in the Alaskan Wilderness.  The kids had found some "pretty" rounded river stones along the shoreline that sparkled with flecks of "Gold" to give to her and we were planning to drive to the nearest village a predominantly T'linket settlement complete with Totem Poles & Clan Houses where there was a Traditional Potlach Dance Performance this evening. Why, I was even planning for us to eat at a genuine Restaurant for dinner!

Butt she had emphasized that she did not want to even hear the word "Birthday"  Well as the day wore on and we walked on eggs around her, she seemed more and more distraught...  Finally, midafternoon came and went, and Katie started crying, thinking she was upset over turning 30 we turned to her to console her and she sobbed out,...

"Nobody Cares!  Nobody even remembered it was my Birthday today!"

Waiting on the school bus

May 6, 2018

This is a photo taken at the drive way of the Demaree farm. I knew Kay as she was called then, while she and her sister Lin waited on the school bus. Kay loved to ride my poney and drive the tractors around our farm. We played pass in her large yard. We fished in the lake next to her home. She dug the fish hooks out of my fingers several times, Ruth, her mother, would alwas put Iodine on making me yell. The Oatman family were great neighbors. I shurly miss all of them.

Waiting on the school bus

This photo was taken while we waited on the school bus. She was my neighbor when living just West of Versailles. She hated this photo when I showed it to her later in years. I kidded her as I called it her high water pants.
