Born in Stainforth he went to schools in Stainforth.  In is teens he spent his leisure time going out around his home village with his friends. One place he frequented was the Peacock Inn, this is where he met his wife Barbara. They married in February 1970 at Moorends and stayed together for 45 years until his death in August 2014.
