Kenneth C. Gates, 81, of Perry, formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, July 22, 2012 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born May 16, 1931 at Iola, the son of Dwight Leonard and Ruth Bebee Colwell Gates. He was a 1949 graduate of Iola High School and a 1951 graduate of Allen County Community College. Kenneth worked as a maintenance foreman at the Goodyear Company in Topeka for many years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa and a member of the Perry Masonic Lodge # 415 A.F. & A.M. , Order of Eastern Star chapter #62 in Oskaloosa, and a member of the Arab Shrine and the Arab Shrine Clown Unit in Topeka and the Fidelity Shrine in Lawrence. He served in the Kansas National Guard for several years. He was married to M. Berneice Shumaker on March 10, 1952 at Medford, OK., she survives at the home in Perry. He is also survived by a son, Kevin Gates, Coppell, TX., two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” S. Johnson, Topeka, Kendra K. Kennedy, Perry, one brother, Phillip Gates, Lebo, two sisters, Viola R. Nott, Topeka, B. Bel Grimsley, Americus, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jonathan Gates Wright. A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Barnett Family Funeral Home , 1220 Walnut (U.S. Hwy 59) Oskaloosa, KS. 66066. Memorials may be made to the Arab Shrine Travel Fund or to the Midland Hospice in care of the Barnett Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 602, Oskaloosa, KS., 66066.
