This memorial website was created in loving memory of Kenneth Casey. A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 7, 2019 in Chicago, IL at The Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront hotel. The memorial service was a beautiful tribute to Ken’s life.

Several people have asked about making a contribution to a charitable organization in Ken’s honor and there is none more fitting than the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). As many of you know NOMA meant a great deal to Ken and as such we would like to direct your contribution to his legacy to a new educational program—the NOMA Foundation Fellowship. The Kenneth E. Casey Foundation Fellowship is being launched in 2020 to assist a new architecture school graduate (either undergraduate or graduate) in their pursuit of identifying a job opportunity, relocating after graduation and obtaining guidance and resources to navigate working life and professional exam preparation. The new fellowship program will help ensure that NOMA is providing structured support for selected fellows to ensure that they remain motivated to become architects. Encouraging and assisting new graduates was something that Ken was very passionate about and this fellowship is a wonderful way to carry on his work.

For those of you who are inclined to make a contribution (in any amount) to the fellowship please make checks payable to “NOMA Education Foundation c/o the Kenneth E. Casey Foundation Fellowship”.

Checks can be mailed to:
The NOMA Charitable Education Foundation
1735 New York Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20006

Also, please continue to write tributes, post stories and your photos to the site. They help us all to cherish the memories of Ken!

We first met in 1987 at an INOMA meeting. I also met Kerl LeJuene, Brian Ellison, Eletrice Harris, and a few other long standing INOMA members back then. Somehow we bonded and became like brothers. We experienced many trips, NOMA Conferences, business ventures, social events, Auto Shows, barbeques, parties, and even our own wedding days together! It’s crazy that you are no longer here, but I witnessed you bravely handle your illness and do what you loved to do until the end! I’ve been in a fog ever since last Saturday, knowing that you are no longer around, however I know you are no longer in pain and at peace! May God bless your soul my good friend! You were the best of us! We are all better for knowing you!

Ken Casey will be missed. His humor and wit weathered many an obstacle.

A champion on many levels.

We met at highschool and grew up in the same south side Auburn Gresham Brainerd neighborhood, and went on to become architects following the footsteps of the trailblazers before us and charting our own paths.

" Can anything good come out of Nazereth?".....the answer is absolutely.

My condolences to his wife and family, for their love and for sharing Ken with us.

Ken will be missed, but fondly remembered.

I knew Ken as a "Jokester", he always had a funny, timely interjection! I had the pleasure of traveling with Nadene and Ken to France and Italy...what a wonderful time, I will never forget.

From my lips to your spirit...fly free!
Always,
Norma

I write this with great sadness over the loss of a family friend. I met Ken many years ago in Oak Park through his wife, Nadene. My husband and I have had many occasions to spend time with Ken and Nadene over the years, in Oak Park and Ft Lauderdale, but the times that I visited with him during these past few weeks are the most memorable. I marveled at how well Ken had processed the news from his doctor – no sadness, anger, complaints – he sat and talked in a quiet, strong voice. I witnessed him handling business calls and could not believe he was still working considering what he was going through. I’m still in shock that he is no longer with us, but I know that he is in a better place. May God give his family the strength to bear the pain of their loss.  Rest in Peace, Kenneth Casey!

Ken was a mentor and friend. No matter how long it was between our talks he always had a listening ear, word of advice and helping hand. I appreciated his genuine love and respect for people and his craft. He will definitely be missed. Nadene, I pray that God will give you peace and comfort.

An Evening With Ken

we sat
and talked
supposed to be about business
but it wasn't
we spoke of family,
fathers in particular,
sisters in general.
of course, wives

you remembered how
walking from school
you noticed windows
and that led
to looking at your future vocation.

i marveled how
though infirm in body
your voice and mind
reflected rock solid spirit.

we connected late in life,
but early in eternity
your courage through the night
was as certain
as the morning sun.

rest well my brother
there is peace
in the valley.

Cousin Kenny was a kind and fun-loving spirit. He blessed my life in many ways. He was one that I could talk to and he didn't mind sharing his wise counsel. He supported and encouraged my decision to answer the Call to active Gospel Ministry. Cuz encouraged my decision to enroll in and complete Emory's Doctor of Ministry Program, at an "older" age. Cousin Kenny supported our biennial neighborhood Community Reunion in Covington, GA, hundreds of miles away from his beloved Chicago.  He sent me a donation each time we had a Reunion, starting in 2011.  His generosity covered the cost of attendance for families that couldn't afford it.
Cuz visited me in Georgia and I visited he and Nadene in Chicago.  We also loved to talk about and play golf, lots of golf!
Our time on this earth is given by The Lord. Cousin Kenny was a gift to all of us. Thank you Cuz for the good times! Thanks for helping me know how to live and enjoy the now! I thank God for the wonderful Blessing of my cousin, Kenny Casey! I love you and will miss you Cuz!

I will forever remember Ken as my fun loving, always joking brother in law-especially the times he drove Nadene crazy with his silliness :)
I live in Edmonton, Canada and Ken would always ask me how life was in the frozen tundras of the north. This always made me smile each time he said it-(although I would always pretend to be offended) because indeed we do have some frozen tundra days.
Ken I miss you, I miss your mischievous smile, and your mischievous ways. Judge Judy will never be the same for me! Rest in peace my dear brother-in-law.
…. "A sleep I shall have,
A rest I shall have,
Yet death will be but a pause.
For the peace of my years
In the long green grass
Will be yours and yours and yours..."

Hey Bro,
Man, I made it! One year in a “panni”. That’s a joke from someone’s post that went viral.
All the kids and I are good and healthy (well sorta healthy - sigh). See my key above - it’s a “panni” out here!

Love and miss you. I always see memories that you had a hand in or remind me if you and I smile. You were a cool dude and awesome husband, brother, uncle, friend...dude.  Love and Miss You Deb!

Obituary

September 9, 2019
Kenneth Edwin Casey, age 58, was born in Detroit, Michigan. Kenneth, also known as “Ken” or “Kenny”, was the 3rd of 4 children born to Robinson (Lawrence) and Barbara Casey. The Casey family moved to Chicago in 1966 and once there, Kenny was immediately drawn to the Chicago skyscrapers, and at an early age gained an instant love for architecture.

Kenny attended Paul Cuffee and Cook Elementary schools. He, as well as his older brother and sister, attended Lindblom Technical High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) with a Bachelor of Architecture in Building Technology. While at UIC, he was active with Black Architecture Students for Excellence (now NOMAS – National Organization of Minority Architecture Students).

Kenny had many hobbies and loved activities at Foster Park such as wood shop and swimming. He spent many hours during his teen years in the basement playing rock music on his guitar. He loved playing tennis, golf and taking photos, a love that spread to both his parents. Kenny was a lover of jazz music and anyone that was in a car with him likely experienced this passion.

In 1996, through a friend, Ken met Nadene Chambers who would become the love of his life. They were married in May1998 and enjoyed 21 years of marriage. Ken and Nadene traveled all over the U.S. and abroad to destinations such as Australia, Italy, France, Spain, England, Switzerland, Canada but most notably, Hawaii. He loved Hawaii!

After his wife, Ken’s greatest love was architecture! We were always proud to drive by a building, firehouse or school that had been “touched” by Ken’s work in some form. Kenny was also an excellent host. Wherever his home was, there was always a great time with the annual Jamaican food tasting event – where his mother-in-law, Joan Chambers, cooked extensively. This event gave family and friends many years of laughter, good food and fond memories.

Ken was blessed to have a career that also showcased his exceptional skills and love for architecture. He began his career in Project Management and he gave back in many ways, most notably to the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA). Ken served NOMA in many roles over 30 years. Ken later realized a dream of entrepreneurship and ownership starting his own company, KASIdesigns, in 1998. He was the President/Managing Principal, Architect for over 21 years. But because Ken had such a kind, gentle and generous spirit he used that platform to unselfishly touch many lives through networking, mentoring, friendship, and encouraging others to start their own businesses.

Ken made his transition on Saturday, August 3rd, 2019. His parents Robinson and Barbara Casey, and his sister Robin Marie Casey preceded him in death.

Left to cherish great memories of Ken and continue his legacy are his wife Nadene Chambers of Fort Lauderdale, FL; brother Michael Casey of Chicago, IL; sisters Angela Carter-Gaines of Houston, TX and Deborah Casey of Memphis, TN; mother-in-law Joan Chambers of Brooklyn, NY; sisters-in-law Claudia, Odette and Sandrian Chambers, and Andrea Feely; aunts and uncle Jacqueline Jackson and Dorothy Casey, Janie Walker, Fred Crawford; nieces & nephews Monet Casey, Anthony II and Andrew Gaines, Paige Davis, Brittany and Tahj Walsh; 5 great nieces & nephews and a host of cousins, dear friends and colleagues.
