Kevin Jiang was shot to death at the age of 26 in New Haven, CT on February 6, 2021. Kevin was born on February 14, 1994 in Iowa City, IA to his parents Zhen (Linda) Liu and Mingchen Jiang. He spent most of his childhood in Chicago, IL. As a high school student, he joined the youth group at the Chinese Bible Church of Oak Park (now Cornerstone Chinese Church), where he came to understand the Bible and grew as a follower of Jesus. He then went to college and joined the military in Seattle, WA. He graduated from the University of Washington in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in environmental studies. He moved to New Haven, CT in 2019 to pursue a master’s degree at the Yale School of the Environment. While in New Haven, he eagerly volunteered and invited others to join him at Trinity Baptist Church. He also participated in numerous extracurricular activities including the Rivendell Institute and the New Haven Salsa Group. Kevin was warm-hearted and jubilant, rich in service and respect, with a comforting smile. He loved music and the arts, enchanting crowds with his piano skills and motivating novices to step out on the dance floor. Kevin embodied the courage to connect personally with those around him and to uplift those who needed a helping hand. As a veteran of the US Army and a National Guard Reservist, he served his country with excellence. He was engaged to his beloved fiancée Zion, and had much to look forward to. But above all, Kevin lived by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and looked forward to Jesus' promise of the resurrection from the dead. Though his earthly life was cut short, he used the time that he had on earth to the fullest. Kevin is survived by his mother Zhen (Linda) Liu, his father Mingchen Jiang, his stepmother Jun Hua, and his fiancée Zion Perry.

I knew him as a child. We were both the shortest in our class and were always picked last in sports . We enjoyed talking about the cartoons we watched, including "Courage the Cowardly Dog."

I was sad to see him go when he left Chicago. As a child, he had many internal struggles and fears. I've just found out about what an amazing life he had developed afterwards. It hurts me to see how much he grew only to be robbed of his life!

Wish I could've finally see you again while you were still with us. Your battle is over, Kevin! Rest in peace..

Kevin was my student in Intermediate Algebra at North Seattle College, Summer 2013. His enthusiasm in his studies and for life in general was unforgettable. Learning of his murder was a severe shock. My sincerest sympathies for all who knew him and especially for his family and wife to be.

Words can’t describe how devastating this is. Kevin you were always cheerful and passionate. I literally can’t recall a time that you didn’t have a smile on your face. I still remember how we chatted about investing in houses, being an Asian American and planning for the future. Every conversation was delightful. I was honored to have known you and called you my friend. RIP Kevin. There will be no pain in heaven, and you will certainly be missed on earth.

I know Kevin when he was in my platoon while in the WA State National Guard. At times, he was my driver. I got to know him during Annual Training. He is a nice and very good human being. He believed in the goodness in people, in life. He would never start trouble with anyone, and would always strive for the right, the good things around him. I truly believe he strives to make a difference in the world, and want to be that positive change. He would've made the world a better place for us.

Kevin was a direct answer to my prayer in July 2016. I was travelling to Taiwan for a conference and was very new to international travel which made be quite fearful of missing my layover flight from Shanghai to Ningbo to Taipai. I couldn't understand the directions well so I asked different people for information but the language barrier didn't make it easy. Feeling alone and scared I prayed and asked God to allow me to meet an English speaking Christian. After I prayed, I forgot about the prayer. Where I prayed that prayer, Kevin was sleeping on a row of chairs right behind me and we would meet the next morning. He walked up to me and asked "is this the line to Taiwan?". To which I replied "dude, you speak English", "yes I think this is the right line". We laughed and introduced ourselves. He was flying to an orphanage in Taiwan to teach English and we just happened to be on the same flight. It was hours before boarding time so we shared breakfast together, swapped testimonies and talked about Jesus. When we were about to part ways I remembered my prayer and I said "Kevin, you're and answer to my prayer!" His response was "Wow, that's amazing!". We Praised God and said our goodbyes but promised to tell each other about our trips after we returned home. We kept in touch over the years and he always encouraged me that God would use me in a great way and that my faith inspired him. He always had uplifting things to say! I am going to miss our brother-sister bond we had. His life has left an everlasting impact on me and I feel empty at the thought of Kevin not being here anymore. I know he is with Jesus and still cheering me on to fulfil the work God has set out before me. Kevin, I look forward to our first conversation in heaven... in the presence of Jesus.

I was Kevin’s small group leader while he was a student at UW at Bethany community church. I was honored to form a friendship with him and serve him as a mentor. Our relationship was filled with pho, bubble tea, and workouts. I will always remember how he always wanted to help, volunteer with homeless, help others becoming more healthy and learn more about Jesus to strengthen his faith.

His smile lit up the room. He had a innocent charisma about him and was always so positive. I have wept over this tragedy and celebrated the significant impact he’s made in the world in his shortened life. His legacy will continue on.

I read over our discussions over text and will never forget his authenticity, his capacity to love and serve and how beautiful of a human he was.

I will continue to pray for his family (he talked about his mother to me very often!), his friends in seattle, New haven and Chicago. I will continue to pray for his fiancé. Grace and Peace - Prentice

May the Lord be with his family, friends, fiancee, and church family. I pray that through his testimony and life many people will come to know what it really means to know and walk with Jesus.
