BIOGRAPHY OF THE LATE Ing. KWAKU GODWIN DOVLO

December 22, 2021
The late Kwaku Godwin Dovlo was born on Wednesday 30th June 1954 to Dumega Daniel Adzei Dovlo, of blessed memory andAmegashie Aklikashie Seshie of the RoyalSeshie/Dumashie/Kudzawu families of Wuga-Zomayi/Dzelukope. His father was a well-known and respected Chief Fisherman and in his lifetime, the Head of the Dovlo Family and the family’s traditional fishing company.Kwaku or Egor as he was more commonly known in the family was the eldest of his father’s children.

He started his education at the Dzelukope E.P. (L.A.) Schools and entered Keta Secondary School in 1967. He was very successful in the ‘O’ Level examinations of 1972 and thereafter proceeded to Saint Augustine’s College, Cape Coast, for his sixth form education from 1972 -1974.

Being very studious and hardworking, Godwin sailed through his ‘A’ Levels and gained admission into the then University of Science and Technology (UST) now KNUST in Kumasi. He was in University Hall (Katanga). In 1978 he successfully completed the BSc (Civil Engineering) degree course and spent the next year 1979 as a National Service Personnel with the then Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation and was stationed at Sunyani.

For most of his working and professional career, Godwin worked with the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation which later became the Ghana Water Company. He however also caught the ‘Agege Bug’ and between 1981 and 1985, variously worked as

(1) a Lecturer in the Civil Engineering Department of the Kaduna Polytechnic (1981 to 1982)
(2) Water Engineer/Senior Water Engineer, with the PlateauState Water Board, Jos,in Nigeria from 1982 till 1985.
Godwin returned home to Ghana in 1986 and rejoined the Ghana Water Company where he made steady progress through the hierarchy leading him to become the Deputy Managing Director in 2012 and finally and ultimately the Managing Director in April 2013

During his period with GW&SC/GWC,Godwin completed his MSC (Sanitary Engineering) at the UNESCO-IHF Delft in The Netherlands (1991 – 1993) and also acquired an Executive Masters in Business Administration (EMBA) at GIMPA

Godwin’s long career in the water industry prior to his retirement from public service covered virtually all aspects of work in a typical water supply utility at middle and top engineering and management levels. To a lot of us, his friends, family and mates he was a readily available general utility and Civil Engineer not only on water issues but also to be consulted on all personal engineering problems pro-bono.

On retirement, Godwin became his own boss. Setting up Water Links Ltd., which was involved in the design and construction of water distribution systems for Real Estate Development Companies (such as Regimanuel Grey Ltd.) He also worked as a Technical Director of JET General Ventures Limited.

Being the eldest ‘nephew’ and the most identifiable leader of the family’s next generation placed other responsibilities on him which he bore calmly, effectively andquietly. But he was also strong willed, very principled, strict butfair, respectful, honest in giving his opinions and well organised in his approach to work and life. Godwin was jovial with a ready smile and always good company to have around, He was anexcellent mixer who loved music, movies and fashion. He will be sorely missed whenever there is a gathering to nibble at the ‘family brand’.

On 30th June 1990, which was his birthday, Godwin traditionally married his sweetheart Doris and on another birthday, 30th June 2004 he again consolidated the relationship under the Ordnance. Kwaku and Doris had three children Woedinam, Wakafui and Wolaenam. He is survived by Doris, the three children and his aging mother Amegashie.
