This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Lance Ewens, 27, born on February 4, 1979 and passed away on May 25, 2006. We will remember him forever.

I met Lance when he was 12 years old. It was October 1, 1991. I remember this date because it was my first day of school at Ardmore High School. My grandmother had died and my family moved to take care of my grandfather. It took about two weeks before me and Lance became acquainted. Soon, a friendship developed that would last for 15 years. Not one day goes by that I do not think of him. Lance had the most charismatic charm and smile. He lit up a room with his laughter. Lance was the most intelligent individual who loved animals. His favorite colors were black and blue. Be at peace now Lance and do not worry. Your mother keeps Baylee close. Baylee has Buddy for company.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.

Ardmore High School Prom, 1996

January 20, 2014

My prom: Lance, myself, and Kanako. Kanako was an exchange student from Japan. Lance loved to dance. I was not much of a dancer myself so thankfully, Kanako was. I spent most of my prom seated and watched Lance dance with his friends. Lance always had a talent for learning new dance moves and creating his own! An Aquarius, Lance had a flair for engaging people. When Lance went out, all eyes were upon him. He was a star then and if you look close enough at night, you will see him still shining bright.

Ardmore High School Prom, 1997

January 20, 2014

Lance’s prom: Lance, myself, and Monica. Monica was an exchange student from Puerto Rico. Lance loved being around people. I do not remember this prom much. I do remember feeling blessed that I was still in Lance's life. Lance knew me better than I knew myself. After graduation, Lance kept contact with me. Life is not the same after graduation. Eventually, Lance and I were roommates. Regardless how Lance felt, he would always make you smile. His smile alone was enough to make you smile. It has been seven years since Lance left this world. Lance may have left this world but his spirit still remains. He will not be forgotten.
