Laurie's Historical Clothing
Laurie's Memorial Service at Pohick Church in Lorton, Virginia, July 20, 2019
Today friends and family from far and wide came together to memorialize and celebrate the life of Laurie Leigh Kittle.
Personally speaking I have never attended a more fitting tribute to any person"s life. I know in my heart she was smiling down on everyone today at Pohick Church as her friends came dressed in their 18th century clothing to honor her love of history. For her service to be held at George Mason's and George Washington's family church was amazing, for her love of our country's history was her passion. To all her amazing friends, may the peace you brought to Laurie"s family today come back to you ten-fold. Thank you all who attended Laurie's service and honored her life today, it means the world to her family. We could not imagine a more loving, heartfelt tribute that what happened today at Pohick Church in celebrating Laurie's life. Bless you all.

Laurie and the Plantation Christmas Special Event
One of my enduring and happy memories of Laurie is working with her for a number of years on the living history portion of the Plantation Christmas event at George Mason’s Gunston Hall. For the two months leading up to this public program, a group of had regular planning meetings, sometimes at Panera’s, for breakfast; Gunston Hall was my regular job as the education coordinator but Laurie had to fit in meetings before her paying work. There were daily phone calls on some aspect of the Christmas program – about a volunteer who needed historic clothing, someone who was displeased about her/role, the gathering of props, and so on. Throughout the time-consuming event coordination, Laurie maintained her resolve to keep the living history as accurate as possible to the 18th-century time period, while working through inevitable changes with flexibility and a sense of humor.
On the evenings of Plantation Christmas, Laurie always was stationed in character at the front door of the mansion, with me below the front porch the line of guests to flow into the house for the living history experience. Sometimes Laurie was portraying the take-no-prisoners Gunston Hall housekeeper Abigail Fletcher or a 18th-century gentry partygoer taking her leave on the front porch and gossiping about Mason’s family and friends inside. Whatever the personage Laurie portrayed, we always had a lively running dialogue between us, with Laurie as Mrs. Fletcher or whoever welcoming modern-day visitors into the house.“We don’t want these guests waiting outside, Mrs. McHugh,” Mrs. Fletcher would scold me loudly.“By all means, let us have them enter.”
This small anecdote captures well Laurie’s magnificent skills in living history – her dedication to the history being related, her ease in working with a group to tell a story about the past, and her ability to create magic when portraying a character from long ago.
Richer for the friendship
I met Laurie when we worked together at Apptis. I so enjoyed her wit and intellect. I used to say every time we talked I learned something new! I enjoyed the book club at work picking up some new favorites along the way. We kept in touch and I loved hearing her travel stories. It was nice to have someone to talk to about the politics of the day aswell as from a historical perspective. Laurie’s friendship has made my life richer.
Found this today, I thought I would share as I found this very interesting. My Mother during WWll was a " Rosie the Riveter" in Newark, New Jersey. She made airplane transponders, something we were quite proud of as a family. My Mom also went to USO dances in her free time. Laurie chose these cartoons from Peanuts as a tribute to my Mom. Love this!
Reconnecting with Laurie
Just a little over a year ago, Laurie and I reconnected and shared memories, new beginnings and anticipated endeavors. I feel so fortunate to have had that two-hour lunch with Laurie and so sad we won’t have more. To know Laurie, you would have known her brilliance and her thirst for knowledge, especially history. Laurie could never get enough reading. Yes, she was the ultimate “bookworm.” She and I went through first to twelfth grades together. One of my favorite activities with Laurie was each Saturday we would hop on a local bus to our mall to eat our favorite pizza and then to see one or two movies! We would then critique them and Laurie’s review usually prevailed. Laurie, I will never forget you and our wonderful times together. Keep spreading your knowledge, my friend.
I so admired Laurie's intellect and knowledge of history. Together we facilitated an 18th century history reading group which we started at Gunston Hall over 20 years ago. She was so wonderful at suggesting books to read and keeping everyone coordinated on meeting dates. I was particularly fond of hearing Laurie's often critical review of the books - she could find errors in the author's research like no one else! She was an incredible resource to have at our meetings as she could answer almost any question on history and had total recall of all the books we had read over the years. I will miss her dearly.
Laurie at URS / APPTIS 2004 - 2016
To my long time friend and former colleague, you will be forever missed. You have left us too soon just like many of our friends and family members who have succumbed to cancer of many types. You will not be forgotten. I remember fondly our annual Thanksgiving potluck at URS / APPTIS which you would always help to organize and for bringing your encyclopedic knowledge of history and many other subject by creating a game of jeopardy for the office. It was never easy (you designed it that way purposely, as you often told me “if it were too easy, what would be the point?”) but it was always memorable! Thank you for celebrating team birthdays and Helping make our office more than just a 9 - 5.
