This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Lawrence M. O'Donnell

Lawrence Michael O’Donnell died on August 30, 2020, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, after a courageous battle with cancer.  The son of Lawrence Harry O’Donnell and Edna O’Dowd O’Donnell, Larry was born in St. Louis, MO during the war, on September 25th 1943, while his father was fighting in the Pacific theater.   He first met his father when he was two and his Dad returned from the war effort.

Larry’s childhood was spent in a number of locations, with some time spent in Oklahoma and some in DC until the family eventually settled in Kennett Square, PA.  He attended Salesianum School for high school, and graduated from King’s College in Wilkes Barre in 1965.  Larry went to Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA where he earned a J.D. in 1968, and then NYU where he obtained a Masters in Tax Law.  He practiced law in West Chester for 50 years, mostly with the firm he co-founded, MacElree Harvey.  He was a 50 year member of the Chester County Bar Association, of which he was very proud.

Larry was professionally successful as both a lawyer and an entrepreneur. He was civic minded and served on numerous community and corporate boards, including Jackson ImmunoResearch Laboratories and Potomac Photonics. While he had too many interests to list, in particular he was a car fanatic and an avid pilot for over 20 years. He loved spending time in Cape May during the summer and St. Barth during the winter, interspersed with his home in Chester Springs. Above all, Larry felt his crowning achievement was his family, paramountly his enduring and harmonious marriage of 42 years with his true love and partner, Sue, and their six children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.  Children: Cathie O’Donnell, Whitney Lukens (Chris Cox), Jennifer Hanlon (Gary Hanlon), Trevor Lukens (Dr. Jennifer Howard), James B. O’Donnell, and Gavin C.B. O’Donnell (Molly Laufman).  He was also a beloved brother to Patrick O’Donnell (Hannah Gardner), Katie Mehne (Rob Mehne), and “Sam” (Maureen) Graybill (Ed Graybill).

There will be a memorial service once the scourge of Covid-19 is passed.  In the meantime, in lieu of flowers, friends and family are welcome to contribute to any of the several charities he supported:  Community Volunteers in Medicine: www.cvim.org; Chester County Food Bank:  https://chestercountyfoodbank.org;  DonorsChoose (education):  www.donorschoose.org; and Brandywine Valley SPCA, https://bvspca.org/ .

I just learned of Larry’s passing. I’m sure he is missed by his family and so many others. He was so well known. I began my work career working for him at MacElree. It began in an unusual way- he had been in a car accident and was in the hospital. I had never met Larry in person before being hired. I traveled back and forth to hospital for first week or so to review work. I thank him for having the confidence in me and offering me a paralegal position, a position I held with the firm for 42 years. Larry was a very intelligent, interesting and fun person.

There are so many things I want to say about my incredible father-in-law, and will do so in another post. He deserves a more complete tribute than I can yet manage to put to words. But for now I just want to share some pictures... and a sweet and funny thing that happened and made me smile while looking through photos of Larry on my phone.

When I was pulling up photographs and asked my Iphone to search for images of Larry, Apple's technology mistook a photo of Jaden and Keller with Santa Claus for Larry. As Jaden said, it was kind of a perfect mistake, in that "Larry basically was Santa".

That helped me smile through my tears because it was absolutely Larry's essence. He appeared to love nothing more than to give to others and to make us all as happy as possible... to surprise and spoil us, to treat us to things, and to create opportunities to bring us all together. His generosity and joy for life was unparalleled. I miss him so much.

Larry was one of those rare souls who combined the determination to accomplish much with the good sense to know how to enjoy what life had given, and, even more rare, the ability to share that joy with others. We were blessed to know him and send all our love. He will be greatly missed in the Chester Springs community he helped to shape.

A special man!

Dear Sue and family,
As it is so difficult to put into words the feelings we have knowing Larry will not be with us in the future.  Thank god for your son, Gavin O’Donnell and our son Ryan Gardner, meeting each other in Select and immediately knowing they wanted their parents to get together. .  That was the beginning of a wonderful friendship, many years of St Barth’s celebrations.
Just before we left in February 2020, we dined together at the old Hideaway.,a nice evening where we could actually finish a sentence.  Larry was warm, humble, engaging throughout the evening as his  normal demeanor prevailed.  We will remember that last time physically together as well as our virtual zoom calls,  never letting Larry fade from our memories.

Continuing on; how the two of you  made Marius 97th birthday special by delivering cake when you knew he was not able to go to the bar.  In the normal O’Donnell fashion,  you videoed the celebration and shared it with those of us that could not be there. On June 18th, we received the news Marius passed away. Again, because of Covid, we could not be on the island. The Stakelborough  family  asked Jeff to speak  at the funeral. Not being able to arrive on the island, Jeff asked Sue to read his written eulogy.  Sue did not hesitate and did a wonderful presentation. Larry  was not feeling well  ( and being cautious about covid) listened to the ceremony from his car.  Amazing!

We are confident Sue/family  will continue the O’Donnell  legacy in a fashion that would make Larry proud. Love this family to the moon and back!
Thank you for including us in your long list of friends! RIP Larry!
So profoundly sad,
Kitty and Jeff Gardner

A tribute to a dear friend

We were fortunate to be introduced to Larry and Sue many years ago in St. Barts by our cousins, Phyllis and Burt. With each passing year, as we got to know Larry and Sue, we realized what a blessing it was to have them in our lives. They and their family (many of whom we've met) are a reflection of their love for each other and for whose lives they've touched. We will miss Larry's wonderful smile but we will carry him and all that he stood for with us in our hearts. And we will still have Sue in our lives.
Much love, Sheila & Norman
