Leland will be greatly missed but we are thankful he is in the presence of the Lord! My parents Sally and Richard Schmuck had Sunday lunch with Kerrick’s and my family was blessed to get to know them by joining the lunch group when in town!! Leland always had a story to tell and laughter to share!!! His interest in our lives was a blessing and encouragement!! He blessed our lives!!!! Ralph and Diane Thacker

Steve and I will certainly miss our dear friend LeLand. Our hearts are saddened to hear of the loss of this wonderful man. We are at peace knowing he is with our Heavenly Father. We feel very blessed to have known Leland. It didn't take us long to figure out that Leland had a strong faith, he loved his family and adored his lovely wife, Marilyn. We remember when we first met Leland. He made us feel so welcomed to Holiday Haven. He always cracked us up when he saw Steve working on a project and Leland would asked if Steve needed him to come over to watch him work to make him feel part of the park. We will cherish his warm welcomes we always received from him upon arrival to Holiday Haven to the visits on their patio soaking up the beautiful views, enjoying Michigan summers and Leland's witty sense of humor. We loved our visits with them and will cherish them always. Thank you for sharing your family with us too. Through you and Marilyn, we are forever grateful for our special friendship with your son, Greg and dauther-in-law, Wendy. They are such wonderful people like you and Marilyn. Thank you, Lord for allowing our paths to cross with Leland, Marilyn and their beautiful family. Leland, you will forever be in our hearts. Lots of love,

We have lived beside Marilyn and Leland almost 17 years. One reason we built next door to them was because when we brought our daughter to see the location of two different places and she wrote “next to the nice man” beside this spot! That was our feeling exactly, so here we are after all this time. In the summer, we have a swing on our patio and sometime we would look out and there sat Leland just waiting for us to go sit with him!
We will miss Leland more than we can imagine.

When I moved into The Village at Harvest Wind in June of 2002, Leland and Marilyn had lived here a year and seemed to know everybody. Each evening during the summer numerous residents walked around the Langton circle and stopped to chat on Karrick’s patio where they were guaranteed a warm welcome and plenty of laughs. Those times were the beginning of the friendly camaraderie that’s a hallmark of the neighborhood to this day. In June 2005 when enough units were sold to enable formation of a resident board, Leland and I were both on it. During that first meeting, one of the outstanding resident complaints that was discussed was landscaping and dead tree removal. Leland assumed landscaping responsibility resulting in him later to proclaim that more residents had sworn at him about landscaping in one year than he’d heard all the time he was with the Ohio State Patrol or was a dog catcher. Besides landscaping he tackled gutter problems as well as just about anything that came up. Near the end of each board meeting he could be counted on to read off a list of residents needing to receive violation letters for not having their pole lights lit at night. There wasn’t a detail that escaped him. It was a frustrating time when there was so much work to be done, so many things that didn’t work right and we were unable to get the builder to make things right. Leland could get angry but could also always be upbeat and keep the other board members smiling. Over the years, everyone who met him liked him. He made an invaluable contribution to this community. In the past few days, several residents have told me how much he will be missed and that hearing of his passing brought tears to their eyes. I’ll miss him too but it makes me smile to imagine him in heaven telling everyone that there must be something behind the Lord calling him home on Halloween.

I began my career with OSP at the Academy in 1983, and Sgt. Karrick was part of the staff. Always funny, never rattled. I was surprised to see he retired in 1985-didn't think it had been that long ago. I was privileged to attend the same church, so bumped into Sarge and Marilyn every now and then (it's a big church). As you can imagine, he always had some quip waiting for us, usually asking my wife how she puts up with me.

I spoke with Sgt. Karrick a few times early in my career. I think retired Trooper W J Bradley said it best for all of us in his FB comment:

"Sgt. Karrick had to be one of the KINDEST officers in the Patrol. Soft spoken and caring. Will always remember his sincerity."

So sorry to hear of Leland's passing. He was a great person. His droll sense of humor was always a pleasant breathe of fresh air.

We also thank him for his service not only to his country but to the State of Ohio as an officer of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

His Life

Leland Paul Karrick, 90, of Westerville, OH, went to worship his Lord in Heaven on October 31, 2020, following complications of a massive stroke. A strong and extremely active man in body, mind, and spirit up to the final healthy days of his life, Leland lived a full life, seizing opportunities, maintaining principles, fostering friendships, while being a faithful patriarch to his family—all in service to God.

For 68 years, Leland deeply loved and faithfully served his surviving wife Marilyn M. Karrick. He was a dedicated, supportive and wise father to his children Rebecca Hebrank (husband Gregg) of Bellbrook, OH, and Gregory Karrick (wife Wendy) of Portage, MI. Leland was a loving and proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Jonathan (Heather) Hebrank, Trisha (Clay) Doench, Kearsten (Justin) McCoy, Jillian (Brandon) Nelli and Madison Karrick. He was also absolutely delighted by his eight great grandchildren: Abigail and Bentley Hebrank, Braxton, Maddox and Lynix Doench, Mercy and James McCoy and Savannah Nelli. Leland is survived by his sister Betty (Karrick) Fagan of Findlay, OH. Preceding Leland to his heavenly home was his young, precious daughter Vicki Lynne and his parents Paul and Gladys Karrick of Findlay, OH.

Throughout his life, Leland was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and marked his life by service to others: 4 years in the Navy as an airplane engine mechanic; 33 years as a Trooper with the Ohio State Patrol; 15 years as the Director of Animal Care and Control of the Franklin County (OH) Animal Shelter; as well as multiple positions of leadership within his neighborhoods and in the churches he worshipped and served in with his family.

To know Leland was to know a man with a brilliant sense of humor who, to the very end of his life, was ripe with a well-timed wise-crack and an entertaining, fun-loving personality. Leland’s family and friends will remember him with joyfulness and will deeply miss his presence from our lives.

Due to pandemic limitations, the family will hold a private Celebration of Life observance followed by burial in Findlay, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes and appreciates memorial donations made to the Leland Karrick Memorial Fund at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Unfortunately, we only had the opportunity to stop and visit with Leland a few times after moving into the Holiday Haven Community. It was obvious that Leland was wonderful human being who loved his family and enjoyed people.We always felt welcome to stop and chat when he was sitting out on the patio.We will miss our visits and the chance to get to know him better.

Leland and I (Harold) had a great friendship. We enjoyed ribbing each other about our State football team. He was an avid “Buckeye” and I a “Wolverine”! I got many a phone call reminding me that his “Buckeyes” had beaten my “Wolverines” and guess what his “Buckeyes” had a victory on the day he passed away. Leland would be proud! Bonnie and I are going to miss Leland and not ashamed to say we loved him and Marilyn.
