I had the pleasure of meeting Leonid and Nina through the classical music loving and concert going MeetUp, hosted by Mather Pfeiffenberger. Nina and Leonid were the most vivid of the welcoming members at my first meeting, the 2016 Independence Day concert at the National Cathedral, with a convivial group luncheon afterward at Cafe DeLuxe. I was fortunate to be seated with Leonid and Nina at the cafe. Their exquisite manners included everyone at our table and in the room, and they drew the entire group together in conversation about the music and life. Their gracious treatment of each other showed the happiest of marriages.

It has been a joy to encounter them at similar gatherings and hear Leonid's insightful views on the performances we enjoyed together. The sparkle of Leonid's insights and the example of Leonid's and Nina's happy marriage will be missed at the group's meetings. I hope that Nina will continue to join the group and bring her and Leonid's spirit to our gatherings.

Leonid Abramovich Shulman has died... This tragic news is a wound in the heart! Sad news for everyone who knew him, loved and who disinterestedly helped him at different periods of his life.
Each of us, who is at this mournful farewell ceremony, mentally recalls unforgettable meetings with our Lenechka: conversations about music and life, about art and creativity. He loved walking with friends in Kislovodsk and Washington. And his stories and comments made such walks saturated with the spiritual light that emanated from him. And his desire to selflessly help others spoke of nobility and human kindness. He had many friends.
When I met him, he studied at the Conservatory at the conductor's and symphony faculty, and I at the composer's department of the music school at the Conservatory. Our contacts were episodic... Once, while still in Leningrad, I asked him for a pass to Mravinsky's rehearsal in the Great Philharmonic Hall. This pass was given only to students of the conductor-symphony faculty. And he gave it to me! Since then, our creative destinies have been interrupted, then revived again.
One of these meetings took place in Kislovodsk, where he was the conductor of a symphony orchestra. In the 80s, a new period of our creative contacts and friendly communication began. I am grateful to him for including my compositions in his concert programs: Ballet Suite, Havana Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra and Symphonic Sketches Based on the Novel of G. Flaubert Madame Bovary. I dedicated this essay to Leonid Abramovich Shulman.
The last time it was performed with great success in Kislovodsk at a concert dedicated to his 85th birthday. Those who attended this concert will long remember its atmosphere and the applause that the conductor was awarded! He demonstrated a high conducting culture, the ability to work with an orchestra, a keen sense of the composer's style, the ability to compose a concert program from works from different eras and trends and to vividly present music to his listeners.
His life was devoted to Art and Music. And he was her faithful servant. Let us be grateful to this person and musician for bringing Good, Hope and Light into our lives!
Rest in peace, dear Leonid Abramovich!
Igor Rekhin, composer, Moscow

Friendship and common musical creativity with Leonid Abramovich Shulman is a precious and important part of my life. Kislovodsk, the city, introduced us to a unique musical destiny: many premieres of Russian symphonic music, regular chamber classical concerts, author's evenings of contemporary composers took place here. And for many years one of the main, bright centers of attraction of musical life was the various musical activities of Leonid Abramovich - not only a conductor, but also a pianist-accompanist, lecturer, and musical educator. We can say that his life was Music.
I was lucky enough to play with the orchestra conducted by Leonid Abramovich several times. I remember our joint performance of Anatoly Alexandrov's Symphony Concerto, Mozart's Double Concerto together with the American pianist Julia Kruger. I remember how selflessly Leonid Abramovich plunged into the world of music performed: here we are going with the orchestra members in the train to a visiting concert in Essentuki - Leonid Abramovich sings themes from the concert, conducts - he is all in music! Another memory: he accompanies the singer in a chamber concert - lectures at the Philharmonic Museum ... And long walks and interesting conversations on the famous Kislovodsk Terrenkur!
My wife and I were lucky that we could communicate with Leonid Abramovich and his beloved wife and faithful friend Nina Pavlovna during their life in Washington: together we visited museums in Washington, concerts at the Kennedy Center, and made an unforgettable boat trip to the BΠ°Ρ…Π°ΠΌΠ° Islands ... We met several times again in their beloved Kislovodsk at concerts of Leonid Abramovich and in Moscow.
In communication with friends, Leonid Abramovich revealed himself as a man of exceptional kindness, attention, solicitude, sincerity and delicacy. His spontaneity, sometimes impatience and enthusiasm in disputes never crossed the boundaries of goodwill and respect for the interlocutor.
After even a short conversation with Leonid Abramovich by phone or Skype, there was always a joyful mood of light.
It is impossible to express in words the severity of the loss! Leonid Abramovich was very close and dear to us as a dear person.
He was a truly bright person!

It was very sad to learn about Leonid Shulman's passing.
Since my first visits to Washington, DC, I treasured his friendship and support. I will remember our conversations that followed many of our National Symphony Orchestra concerts. His musicianship and competence gave me new insights into the music we shared. His gentle manners will be missed immensely by everyone.

Dear Leonid, Rest In Peace surrounded by celestial music!

With deepest respect,

Gianandrea Noseda

Translation from Russian:
To our dear friends who have sent their condolences, farewell, flowers, gifts, in connection with the departure of my dear husband Leonid Abramovich Shulman.
Dear frends!
Β Time stopped for me when Leonid Abramovich left us forever.
Β It's so scary to be alone in the painful silence of an empty apartment, not to hear his voice: "Look at this!", "Read this!", "Don't miss it !!", "Let's definitely listen to this concert!"Β etc ...
Β I had the happiness of almost half of my life next to this talented and bright person.
Β Often I was angry at some stupid little things: scattered things, papers, and I can only realize and understand this now, when it is already impossible to fix something!
Β Take care of each other, dear friends!
Β It's such a happiness to be together!
Β I thank you all for your heartfelt words of support and deep sorrow, wonderful memories of Leonid Abramovich!
Β Believe me, your words help me to survive in this difficult time for me.
Β If Leonid Abramovich could hear your words addressed to him, he would be completely happy, for he appreciated human good above all.
Β I bow to you!
Β With love and gratitude,
Β Your N. P.Β Valyaeva

We are here to celebrate your life
And the measure of its worth
And every single life you touched
While you were on this earth.
We wish to pay our last respects.
That’s why we all are here,
To thank you for your friendship
And all the memories we hold dear.
It’s been a privilege to have known you.
We were family, not just friends,
And we will carry you in spirit
Until we meet up once again.

Message from Mather, Leonid’s and Nina friend:
My dear Nina,
My hart still aches with the news of Leonid’s death and I am so sorry tor your loss! I am also very happy that you and Leonid joined us for the Leonard Bernstein – Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Meetup on December 22.
Leonid was a dear, dear man and a great musician, and his devotion to music has touched me so deeply and always will. Among many other things, I will always remember with happiness the talks on Shostakovich he gave to the Meetup group. It was a joy to me and to so many of us in the Meetup to know him, and we grieve with you the loss of our dear friend. We all love him always.
Dear Nina, I would very much like to host some events for our Meetup group in the near future and at your convenience, during which we can remember Leonid. I would like to host an online shiva first and later I would like to host an online Meetup in which we would play some of his favorite pieces of Russian music. I would like for you to join us for these events, Nina, but only after you feel better.
Thank you, dear Nina. I send you my deepest and most sincere condolences.
Love,
Mather Pfeiffenberger,
Organizer of The DC Classical Music Meetup Group

His Life

OBITUARY OF LEONID SHULMAN

January 18, 2021
Leonid Shulman was born in Zaporozhye on December 22, 1931, then his family moved to Kiev, where he graduated from a music school, and then the Kiev Conservatory.Β  In the early 60s, he entered the Leningrad Conservatory at the conducting faculty, where he studied with the outstanding professors Ilya Musin and Nikolay Rabinovich, who brought up a galaxy of world-class conductors - Yuri Temirkanov, Maris Jansons (1943-2019), Valery Gergiev, Neme JarviΒ  and others, with whom he had professional relations all his life.

Leonid Shulman also took part in master classes by K. Kondrashin and G. Karayan.Β  After graduating from the Leningrad Conservatory, he conducted the Symphony Orchestra in Irkutsk, Lugansk, and the Symphony Orchestra of the State Philharmonic in Kislovodsk, where his main activity took place from 1972 to 1994.Β  North Caucasus State Philharmonic named after Vasiliy Safonov in Kislovodsk is one of the three largest concert organizations in Russia, along with Moscow and St. Petersburg.Β  Outstanding masters of classical music at all times have always considered an honor to perform on this stage.

Indeed, in order to keep the mark of such a famous stage and create glory for the symphony orchestra, a great master of his craft was needed, and such a master and inspiration was Leonid Shulman during his years of work in Kislovodsk.Β  He has performed hundreds of concerts of classical and contemporary music throughout the Soviet Union, as well as toured in Italy with the Arturo Toscanini Symphony Orchestra.Β  Here are just some of the names of those stars in the musical world with whom he worked and performed at his concerts: Bolshoi Theater soloists Vladimir Atlantov and Elena Obraztsova, famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, pianists Bella Davidovich, Lazar Berman, Viktor Bunin, composers Igor Rekhin, VeniaminΒ  Basner, Grigory Fried.Β

Leonid Shulman was the first performer of Grigory Fried's chamber mono-opera β€œThe Diary of Anne Frank”.Β  This opera was first performed on the stage of the State Philharmonic in Kislovodsk, conducted by Leonid Shulman, and later in 2004 he conducted this opera in America, at the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. It was the American premiere.Β  Thus, Leonid Abramovich was the first performer of this opera not only in Russia, but also in America.

In 1994 Leonid Shulman moved to America with his wife Nina Valyaeva . All this time he lived in Arlington, VA, and his enthusiasm never left him.Β  He was always aware of all musical novelties, premieres, concerts, operas, regularly attended all operas and symphony concerts of the Washington National Orchestra, personally knew its conductor Gianandrea Noseda.

Leonid was an active member of Meet up group and a big friend of American Balalaika Society Orchestra. He was also an Honorary member of the American Association of Russian Culture and Education and a welcome guest of the Russian Cultural Center.
The memory of Leonid Shulman will forever remain in our hearts!
