Les Smith

Leslie C. Smith, 67, died Sunday, July 27th at home in West Point with his family by his side.

He was born May 12, 1947, in West Point to Clinton and Beatrice Smith. Les graduated from West Point Jr-Sr High School in 1965. On June 11, 1966 he married Debra (Juhl) Smith. He was a member of the US Army Reserve. Les worked as a soil conservation technician for the National Resource Conservation Service in West Point for 37 years. He and his wife, Deb, owned and operated the Mill Road Truck Wash in West Point.

He was a former 4-H leader, Commander of the American Legion, and member of 40/8.

Les farmed with his father and became an accomplished breeder/exhibitor throughout the dairy industry, winning many national titles. As a national dairy judge, he had the opportunity to judge such shows as the New York State Fair and The National Cattle Expo in Louisville, Kentucky; as well as many state and county fairs. He enjoyed hunting, traveling, and spent many fall Saturdays cheering on the Huskers. His family was his greatest joy.

Leslie is survived by his wife, Debra of West Point; daughter, Shelley (Barry) Bogseth of Olathe KS; son, Dan (Heidi) Smith of Columbus NE; daughter, Jaime Oswald of Henderson NE; son, Tyler (Heidi) Smith of York NE; 12 grandchildren; mother Beatrice Smith of Hooper NE; sisters, Sharlene (Terry) Remmers of Omaha and Gere’ (Bob) Frickenstein of West Point; sister in-law, Carol (Mike) Wortman of West Point; brother in-laws, Tom (Marcine) Juhl of El Cajon CA and Jerry Juhl of LaQuinta CA.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Smith; mother in-law and father in-law, Helmer and Martha Juhl; brother in law, Marvin Reznicek; and niece Deanne Reznicek.

Les donated his organs in hopes of advancing pancreatic cancer research. There will be no visitation, a private burial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family with the intent to donate to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for pancreatic cancer research.
