This memorial website was created in memory of our mother, Lilia (Lily) Gotiangco, who was loved by so many. Due to the current limitations, family and friends will be invited to a celebration of Lily’s life at a later date. In the meantime, please share your stories of Lily. We would love to read your fond memories!

On day, May date, 2020 Lilia (Lily) Gotiangco, 77, of Bethesda, MD, passed away from COVID-19 while in rehabilitation for Lewy’s Body Disease.

Born September 6, 1942, in the Philippines, Lily was the beloved mother of four sons, Gilroy Gotiangco (Harriet) of Germantown, MD, Gener Gotiangco (Jane) of Bethesda, MD, Edgardo Gotiangco (Brooklyn, NY), and Gil (Kim) of Rockville, MD. She was “Lola” to her grandchildren, Megan and Brandon, Gideon and Gillian, and Gabriel and Isabella, who she adored with all her heart. Lily was predeceased by her parents Venancia Guinto and Delores Aquino and brother Edgardo.

Her sons, Gilroy and Gener, were blessed to have had the opportunity to be by her side on her last days, holding her hand, and expressing their eternal gratitude for her love and care throughout their lives. They were also fortunate to have been able to care for her and make her final years as comfortable and worry-free as possible. Visits from her sons and grandchildren brought her great joy during these challenging times and those visits are memories all cherish.

Lily loved her family and spent many years putting her four son’s needs and dreams first, working multiple jobs so they could attend the best schools and have the advantages she hoped a life in America would provide. She was a hard worker, an amazing cook and baker, a voracious reader, and a friend to all she met. Most of all, she loved her sons and grandchildren and took great pride in all their accomplishments and pursuits. Her strong Catholic faith helped her throughout her life and during these final days. We will miss her greatly but are comforted knowing she is in peace with her Loving Father in Heaven.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of a very special Lady. Lily was an awesome neighbor.  I baby sat Edgar when he was born. Loved the egg rolls your mother made. She always had a beautiful smile no matter what kind of day she had.  I hope you remember me and my family from Somerset street. God bless you all.

Today marks 1 yr on the passing of my mother, our Lola to our kids.

This time last year was filled with chaos and challenges for most, and now with things being so different - it is so hard to believe this was only a year ago.

We miss her, and I wish we could continue to share our successes and stories of our kids that she so enjoyed. On this 1 year mark, I will continue to try to make her proud of us and continue to keep her memory in our thoughts.

To Gener and the other brothers:

I do not know you, but I knew your Mom from high school years. She impressed me with her beauty and intelligence, first of all, and her gentle way of speaking. I admired her for her sense of caring. In our last reunions with fellow 59’ers Mapans, we shared our stories briefly of over five decades of life. She spoke highly Of you, her four loving sons and grandkids.
I tried to reach her with the phone number she gave me. Unfortunately, I failed to reconnect with her after the reunion. I will always remember her with her beautiful smile and her kind, caring heart.
A host of angels have joyfully welcomed her. I believe our Maker-Redeemer-sustainer God declares, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

From Flordelizo (Tito) Errazo:
Lai was my classmate in Second Year High School and I remember her as a sweet, quiet girl. Decades later, my wife and I met her several times during the earlier Mapa reunions sponsored by Mapans in USA and Canada. She was an indefatigable leader and a former President of the East Coast Chapter. We were wondering why we had not seen her in a long time.
To her children:
We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. May the soul of your mother be at peace with our Heavenly father. May the love and care of those around you provide you peace and comfort during this time.
May God bless you all,
Tito and Lita Errazo

We were high school classmates, we shared years of teenage memories of a group of nerds, We, our small group of friends, spent our high school days in libraries, in the Mapa High School grounds, more often, in our senior year, in our beloved Mapazette (school organ) workroom. We were proud staff members of Mapazette. No parties, no gallivanting around, no lovelife. (but with well-guarded in-group secrets of individual crushes) Just school, home, books, assignments, projects, great efforts at maintaining good grades and remaining in the top section of a batch of 42 sections, of at least 50 students per section. We were the cream of the crop. And Lai was among the cream of the cream.

Teenager Lai was sweet, very unassuming, quiet, seemingly timid. She seldom showed teeth when she smiled. . . lips clamped together, in upward curve, eyes twinkling. I can see in her family photos that she carried that smile to her older age. But that timid look was deceiving, She was smart,, analytical, and spoke her mind when needed.

Like our friend Celia, I last saw Lai in our 50th Mapa High class reunion in 2009. It was the first time to meet her again after we graduated from high school, and, as it turned out, my last to be with her.

I will continue missing Lai. I had been missing her in the last 11 years after our 50th reunion, but I was hoping I’d see her again. Sadly, I won’t. Prayerfully, later. Bye for now, my friend. You lived a good, productive life. You left behind great legacies of the LILIA GUINTO GOTIANGCO: your accomplished children and promising grandchildren. Rest now with the Lord, Lai, till we meet again in another joyful and final reunion.

I always loved hearing stories about your mother and admired how hard she worked for her family. She had a flair for fashion and never missed an opportunity to inquire about others and make you feel important. You have done such a beautiful job of sharing who she was and how she enriched your lives. Her spirit lives on in the gifts she gave you. Rest in peace Lily. Our thoughts and prayers with you all during this difficult time. Ruth, Gilles, Gabrielle and Margaux

Lily's smile would light up a room. She took such an interest in what I was doing whenever I visited Gener and Jane. The fun family times with Lily, Gener, Jane, Gideon, Gillian,Gilroy, Harriett, Megan, and Brandon were filled with laughs, food and games. She will be missed by her sons, daughter in laws and grandchildren as well as by the McDonald clan in Canada, the US and Japan.

Gener, I will always remember my first Thanksgiving in Maryland. It was in 1991 and my flight back home to Wisconsin was canceled. I had never been away from my family at Thanksgiving and I was a bit lost. You invited me to join you and your family for Thanksgiving. Your mom put on a spectacular feast and treated me like family. She was so gracious and kind. I will always remember her and her warm smile! You have been blessed to have her - may you be forever blessed with wonderful memories of her.

Gilroy, Harriet, Megan, Brandon, and family; my sincere condolences for the passing of your Mom/MiL/Grandmother. What a beautiful tribute, and more importantly, the way you navigated the past few years of care is truly beautiful. It takes a family, and a village! This is a difficult, stressful time and I know it added burdens to your Mom and you all. You could not have done better by her - she is at peace and I wish your family peace as well.

I will miss so much about my mother. The never failing calls on my birthday to sing my happy birthday. Her responses to my jokes. Her amazing food. The extraordinary pride she had in me and my family, especially my kids - with whom she could not say enough about their achievements and activities.  And of course her love and company.  I wish so much we could have done so much more for her, especially in these past few very challenging months. I shall forever miss you mom and hope you know that we love you and know you are now at peace looking down on us, still beaming with pride on your children and grandchildren.

Reunion with MAPA classmates

June 16, 2020
After graduating from high school in 1959, we didn’t see Lilia (Lai) and other classmates until July 1985 when a reunion was held for our class (and one from class ‘55) in Baltimore, Maryland. To say we were all excited to see each other after 26 years is an understatement! Lai, was one of the organizers from the East Coast, helping Luming & Gil Hernandez, Art Leonin, Betty Adeva Cartera, Hidolfo Nepomuceno.

We saw Lai again in Baltimore at another visit to the area when Betty & Joe Cartera hosted a bbq. I remember her talking about her sons. One was on the way to Iraq then. Other times we saw Lai was at different international reunions. Talking about high school, classmates, Journalism class and MAPAZETTE always took place. Beautiful memories!

My husband Tony was also Lai’s classmate in our junior and senior years. In photo, Tony is standing second from left

My talkative classmate

June 16, 2020
Lilia or “Lai” was part of our Mapa High School high school barkada from first year to graduation (1955-1959.) We were seated close to each other because of our surnames starting with M. So it was Lydia Maclang; Celia Manansala; Sonia Margallo; and Eloisa Merced. Lai although Guinto became part of the group because she was seated on the last row before the Ms. Having the same interests we gravitated towards each other. Eloisa transferred to Mapua and we lost touch with her.

During summer vacations Lai and l would exchange letters full of nonsense but we were quite indefatigable correspondents. We would fill up sheets of intermediate pad paper and l think we wrote each other almost every other day. Bring both talkative and talking at miles per hour we probably secreted a lot of saliva.

My last interaction with Lai was during our Golden Jubilee in 2009. We spent several nights -Lai, Lydia, Sonia and l - in the penthouse of Lydia in Legaspi Village. I think we hardly slept but just reminisced; talked about “secrets”; lots of juicy gossip (wouldn’t you wish you knew);  stuffed ourselves - (take note there were many Resto in that area.)

It was one of the happiest times of our group, We kept in touch through emails which we were able to keep going for sometime. But soon, Lai became “in absentia” and we didn’t hear from her anymore except for snippets from US classmates like Betty Africa and Nep Nepomuceno.

And now this...❤️...

May the soul of Lai Rest In Peace in the Perpetual Light of the Lord.

May your travel be swift, Lai. I will include you in my prayers and will offer a mass for your soul’s penance that your trip to heaven be quickly traversed.

A Wonderful Life

May 26, 2020
I wasn’t fortunate enough to know Lilia very well. We only met a few times but I remember her as a sweet, lovely person. And looking through this wonderful collection of photos, it is very clear she enjoyed a wonderful and fulfilling life.

Our deepest sympathies to the whole family.
