The Life of Lina Mae Gilliam

October 21, 2012

Lina Mae Gilliam,
daughter of Simon and Lillian Gilliam (Deceased), was born on March 20, 1915 in Miami, Florida.  As a child, she lived in Miami's historic neighborhood formerly known as “Railroad Shop Colored Addition”, which is today, the Allapattah Community.

Lina Mae, tenderly called “Liny” by her loved ones, gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined St. John Baptist Church.  She later joined the nationally, historic Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 17 under the former leadership of Reverend Edward T. Graham and the current Pastor- Revered, Dr. Ralph M. Ross.  As a faithful and active member of Historic Mt. Zion, Lina Mae served in Choir No. 1 and as a Ward Leader.  She always lived with strong religious and family values.

Lina Mae spent most of her life as a Domestic Helper for Mr. Arthur & Mrs. Mirna Nemser and a nurturing caregiver for their children Benji and Sarah whom she loved dearly.  She also sought the call to service by becoming a charter member of the Eastern Star, Pride of Opa-Locka - Chapter #30 OES.

On Friday, October 19, 2012, at Memorial Hospital Pembroke, she answered the call of God, moving quietly to eternity into the hands of our Almighty Savior, Jesus Christ.

She leaves many loving memories to comfort those who loved and cherished her dearly.  She is survived by sisters: Ida Mae Bennett, Rebecca Harrell, Pauline Slater, and Shirley Curtis; nieces, nephews and many loving relatives and friends.
